Kwun Tong (Chinese:觀塘區) is one of the 18 districts of Hong Kong. It is located in Kowloon. It had a population of 562,427 in 2001. The district has the third highest population while the income is below average.
It is the most densely populated district, with 55,000 per km², but it is also one of the largest industrial areas in Hong Kong. Pollution, poverty and ageing population are the concerns. According to a statistical figures of 2001, the proportion of poor and elderly people in this district is 22.6% and 15.5% respectively. Besides, the number of poor people living in this district is 124,803, which is the highest in Hong Kong.
Kwun Tong District is one of the industrial areas in Hong Kong. The factories had been built since the 1950s. These industrial areas are mainly located in Kowloon Bay, Kwun Tong (to the southwest of Kwun Tong Road), and Yau Tong. Since the importance of manufacturing in Hong Kong is fading out, many factories have been demolished and commercial buildings are being constructed to replace them.
Manulife Financial Centre (traditional Chinese: 宏利金融中心) is an office building on Wai Yip Street, Kwun Tong, Kowloon, Hong Kong. Originally named Kwun Tong 223, it was completed during the second quarter of 2008. The building was renamed Manulife Financial Centre from 1 December 2009.
Kwun Tong 223 comprises two 28-storey office towers connected with a multi-storey structured thoroughfare on the top floors. The building form adopts full curtain wall facade design. The superstructure works were completed in just 18 months.
Kwun Tong 223 was hailed as a landmark office development in Kowloon East soon after its completion in late 2007 because it embodies not just state-of-the-art facilities but also an environmentally sustainable design. The urban waterfront location of Kwun Tong 223 allows tenants to enjoy Victoria Harbour views, whilst its open portal design enables a free passage of sea breeze to the whole neighbourhood.
One of the first New towns in Hong Kong, Kwun Tong was, and remains, a major industrial area. Its population has been growing rapidly, and the demand for housing, medical and educational facilities and services has been increasing. In view of this, a number of community development projects, such as the redevelopment of old housing estates and the construction of major parks, have been implemented in recent years. These projects have incorporated a wide range of supporting facilities, like primary and secondary schools, clinics, community centres and open spaces. All these facilities have brought about a new face to the Kwun Tong District, making it a more comfortable place for the people to live.
The station is elevated, unlike almost every other station in the system. Due to difficulties in installing platform screen doors (PSDs) in above ground stations, the MTR decided not to install PSDs in this station. However, due to recent accidents of falling into the tracks, the MTR has installed automatic platform gates (APGs) on the station's platforms. It is located far away from most residential areas, causing many residents of Kwun Tong to take other means of transport in order to reach the station. There is a shopping centre and office tower, named apm Millennium City 5, connected to the station.
Beneath the station building is a road tunnel which diverts traffic along Kwun Tong Road from the roundabout around the station.
