Darwin's Theory of Evolution: Natural Selection
Most people in the western world used to have a solid idea about our origins: all living organisms were deliberately formed by a single creator. Then, in 1831, a 22-year-old student decided to go on an expedition that would change everything. Upon returning home Darwin came up with his theory of natural selection — a process through which living organisms adapt, reproduce and change. The evolution of peppered moths in the United Kingdom during the industrial revolution is a great example of this process.

It’s 1859 and there was this guy named Charles Darwin and he rode on a beagle to these islands, and had a little idea....(Evolution). Just like humans can take the variety that they saw in animals (descent with modification) and breed horses to be faster or dogs to more hot-dog-like; given enough time, Ol’ Charlie D. figured, nature could take even the smallest, slimiest, of creatures and create the biggest and most baddest of T-Rexes (random mutation & natural selection). Charles Darwin's Idea: Descent With Modification
Now that we've learned about molecules and cells and the simplest forms of life, we are ready to understand how all of life on earth evolved from a single common ancestor. Given our newfound knowledge about the chromosomal theory of inheritance, combined with the theory of natural selection, which is how evolution propagates, we will see how our understanding of biology transformed in the 19th century, thanks to the work of Charles Darwin, and other contemporaries. There are those who say that evolution is "just a theory", but beyond the fact that this stems from a misunderstanding of what the word "theory" means in science, it also has to do with rampant misconceptions about what this model states. So let's learn the basics regarding evolution by natural selection!

Survival Of The Fittest — Stated Clearly
Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/statedclearly
When many people think of evolution by natural selection, they think "Survival of the Fittest". This phrase is often interpreted to mean "only the strong shall survive" but when you look at how common tiny microbes are, that interpretation is clearly not true. What does survival of the fittest really mean?

Evolution by Natural Selection - Darwin's Finches | Evolution | Biology | FuseSchool
The study of finches led to the development of one of the most important scientific theories of all time.
In December 1831 a naturalist called Charles Darwin boarded the HMS Beagle, bound on a surveying voyage of South America. Whilst the ship and crew carried out coastline surveys, Darwin was free to explore the islands en route. In 1835 the Beagle arrived at the Galapagos islands, near Ecuador. What Darwin found there surprised him greatly. As well as giant tortoises and marine iguanas, Darwin collected and preserved a variety of different songbirds called finches. Upon returning to the UK he examined them together with ornithologist, John Gould, and made some fascinating discoveries.
The scientists observed that the birds were all similar to a single type of finch found on mainland South America, suggesting that these mainland finches had originally colonised the islands. However the Galapagos finches were all slightly different from the original mainland species, and they were also different from each other. The finches on each island showed distinct variations in their overall size, beak shape and claw size. These differences were attributed to the differing food sources available on the various islands of the Galapagos. Some of the birds had long thin beaks, and sharp claws suited to catching and eating insects, whilst others had large powerful beaks suitable for cracking open nuts. Because of the distances between the islands, breeding between different species of finch was unlikely, and Darwin concluded that the finches must have evolved over time from the original mainland species to suit the conditions found on each individual island. In all, 13 of the birds brought back by Darwin were identified as being entirely new species, all similar to each other, but with definite variations from their common ancestor. Darwin proposed that the variations seen both within and between the finch species arose by chance.
Variations which gave any individual a competitive advantage made them more likely to survive and therefore reproduce, out-competing those with less advantageous characteristics. Darwin called this theory Natural Selection and he published it in his book “On the Origin of Species” in 1859. Evolution by natural selection is now widely agreed to be the most accurate theory to explain the origin and diversity of all life on Earth.

When many people think of evolution by natural selection, they think "Survival of the Fittest". This phrase is often interpreted to mean "only the strong shall survive" but when you look at how common tiny microbes are, that interpretation is clearly not true. What does survival of the fittest really mean?
