Peter "Pete" Seeger (May 3, 1919 – January 27, 2014) was an American folk singer and activist. A fixture on nationwide radio in the 1940s, he also had a string of hit records during the early 1950s as a member of the Weavers, most notably their recording of Lead Belly's "Goodnight, Irene", which topped the charts for 13 weeks in 1950. Members of the Weavers were blacklisted during the McCarthy Era. In the 1960s, he re-emerged on the public scene as a prominent singer of protest music in support of international disarmament, civil rights, counterculture and environmental causes.
A prolific songwriter, his best-known songs include "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" (with Joe Hickerson), "If I Had a Hammer (The Hammer Song)" (with Lee Hays of the Weavers), and "Turn! Turn! Turn!" (lyrics adapted from Ecclesiastes), which have been recorded by many artists both in and outside the folk revival movement and are sung throughout the world. "Flowers" was a hit recording for the Kingston Trio (1962); Marlene Dietrich, who recorded it in English, German and French (1962); and Johnny Rivers (1965). "If I Had a Hammer" was a hit for Peter, Paul & Mary (1962) and Trini Lopez (1963), while the Byrds had a number one hit with "Turn! Turn! Turn!" in 1965.
"Molly Malone" (also known as "Cockles and Mussels" or "In Dublin's Fair City") is a popular song, set in Dublin, Ireland, which has become the unofficial anthem of Dublin City.
The Molly Malone statue in Grafton Street was unveiled by then Lord Mayor of Dublin, Alderman Ben Briscoe during the 1988 Dublin Millennium celebrations, declaring 13 June as Molly Malone Day. The statue was presented to the city by Jury's Hotel Group to mark the Millennium.
Since 18 July 2014, it has been relocated to Suffolk Street, in front of the Tourist Information Office, in order to make way for Luas track-laying work to be completed at the old location. Due to the increase in touristy foot traffic, and their penchant for being "handsy", the statue's cleavage has been groped repeatedly recently. Enough so that it's bronze hue has begun to wear off on the bosom.
The song tells the fictional tale of a fishmonger who plied her trade on the streets of Dublin, but who died young, of a fever. In the late 20th century a legend grew up that there was a historical Molly, who lived in the 17th century. She is typically represented as a hawker by day and part-time prostitute by night. In contrast she has also been portrayed as one of the few chaste female street-hawkers of her day. However, there is no evidence that the song is based on a real woman, of the 17th century or at any other time. The name "Molly" originated as a familiar version of the names Mary and Margaret. While many such "Molly" Malones were born in Dublin over the centuries, no evidence connects any of them to the events in the song. Nevertheless, in 1988 the Dublin Millennium Commission endorsed claims about a Mary Malone who died on 13 June 1699, and proclaimed 13 June to be "Molly Malone day".
Violet Elizabeth Malone (stage name Molly Malone) (December 7, 1888 – February 14, 1952) was an American actress of the silent film era. She appeared in 86 films between 1916 and 1929. Her father, Lewis Malone, was a metallurgist for mining companies. Her mother was Violet St. John, born in Nebraska to immigrant parents from England.
She started her movie career at the relatively late age of 29 but soon caught the eye of comedic actor and director Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle who cast her in a number of his shorts including Back Stage and The Garage plus his feature film The Round-Up. She also appeared in films directed by John Ford and Clarence Badger. Her last film was the Universal-Stern silent comedy short The Newlyweds' Pest in 1929.
Molly Malone – Balade irlandaise is an album by French singer-songwriter Renaud, released on 23 November 2009 on EMI Records. It is a collection of traditional-style Irish folk songs translated into French, an idea that had been maturing in Renaud's mind for almost two decades. Renaud had previously used Irish influences in his 1991 album Marchand de cailloux and did a low-key tour playing in Irish pubs in 1997.
The album was recorded at the Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin. It was produced by Frenchman Thomas Davidson Noton and arranged and mixed by Irish musician Pete Briquette, formerly the bass player with The Boomtown Rats. Accompanying musicians includes Terry Woods of The Pogues and musicians from Steeleye Span.
Despite mixed reviews in the press, Molly Malone – Balade irlandaise entered the French charts at number one in November 2009. It also reached the top 5 on the albums chart in the French-speaking part of Belgium.
The album title "Molly Malone" is assumed to be partly chosen as a reference to Renaud's son Malone. The second half of the title, "Balade irlandaise", is a play on words between "balade" (a stroll) and "ballade" (a ballad).
Sag mir, wo die Blumen sind, Where have all the flowers gone, long time passing? Where have all the flowers gone, long time ago? Where have all the flowers gone? Young girls have picked them everyone. Oh, when will we ever learn? Oh, when will we ever learn? Where have all the young girls gone, long time passing? Where have all the young girls gone, long time ago? Where have all the young girls gone? Gone for husbands everyone. Oh, when will we ever learn? Oh, when will we ever learn? Where have all the young men gone, long time passing, Where have all the young men gone, long time ago, Where have all the young men gone, They are all in uniform, When will they ever learn? When will they ever learn?

“These are my ‘hits?’ Columbia Records picked the title of this album, not me. Now read the truth,” Pete Seeger says at the beginning of the liner notes he has written for the back of this New collection. It is a very good collection: “Little Boxes,” “Wimoweh,” “Where Have All the Flowers Gone,” “Bells of Rhymney,” “Turn, Turn, Turn,” “Guantanamera,” among others. They were recorded in concert. Seeger goes on to explain that these aren’t his hits, but things that he has come across, some of which he has put tunes to or to words and other people have taken up and made hits. The one extraordinary case is when he made a hit of Malvina Reynold’s song (“Little Boxes”) in his own version. If you are in the mood for remenisce or authenticity, this album is an adequate, reasonable and cheap way of...

On July 26, 1956, the House of Representatives voted 373 to 9 to cite Pete Seeger and seven others (including playwright Arthur Miller) for contempt, as they failed to cooperate with House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) in their attempts to investigate alleged subversives and communists. Pete Seeger testified before the HUAC in 1955. In one of Pete's darkest moments, when his personal freedom, his career, and his safety were in jeopardy, a flash of inspiration ignited this song. The song was stirred by a passage from Mikhail Sholokhov's novel "And Quie Flows the Don". Around the world the song traveled and in 1962 at a UNICEF concert in Germany, Marlene Dietrich, Academy Award-nominated German-born American actress, first performed the song in French, as "Qui peut dire ou vont l...

Today, May 3 2009, is Pete Seeger's 90th birthday. I can't make the big concert at Madison Square Garden to celebrate it, so this is my small tribute to him, an amazing man with an amazing wife, and an amazing life. This was performed at the "We Are One" Presidential Inaugural Concert, January 19, 2009. The song was written by Woodie Guthrie in 1940, first recorded by him in 1944 at Folkway Records, but not released until 1951. Dit zijn de lyrics van Molly Malone.
In Dublin's fair city, Where the Girls are so pretty, I first set my eyes, On sweet Molly Malone, As she wheeled her wheel barrow, Through the streets broad and narrow, Crying cockles and mussels, Alive alive o! Alive alive o! Alive alive o! Crying cockles and mussels, Alive alive o! She was a fish monger, And sure it was no wonder, For so were her Father and Mother before, And they both wheeled their barrow, Through the streets broad and narrow, Crying cockles and mussels, Alive alive o! Alive alive o! Alive alive o! Crying cockles and mussels, Alive alive o! She died of a fever, And no one could save her, And that was the end Of sweet Molly Malone, But her ghost wheels her barrow, Through the streets broad and narrow, Crying cockles and mussels, Ali...

Chorus:
Seventy miles of wind and spray,
Seventy miles of water,
Seventy miles of open bay--
It's a garbage dump.
What's that stinky creek out there,
Down behind the slum's back stair
Sludgy puddle, sad and gray?
Why man, that's San Francisco Bay.
(CHORUS)
Big Solano and the Montecelle'
Ferry boats, I know them well,
Creek and groan in their muddy graves
Remembering San Francisco Bay
(CHORUS)
Joe Ortega and the Spanish crew
Sailed across the ocean blue
Came into the mighty Bay
Stood on the decks and cried, "Ole"
(CHORUS)
Fill it here, fill it here.
Docks and tidelands disappear,
Shaky houses on the quaky ground
The builder, he's Las Vegas bound
(CHORUS)
Dump the garbage in the Bay
City fathers say, "Okay,
When cries of anguish fill the air,
We'll be off on the Riviere."
