Peter "Pete" Seeger (May 3, 1919 – January 27, 2014) was an American folk singer and activist. A fixture on nationwide radio in the 1940s, he also had a string of hit records during the early 1950s as a member of the Weavers, most notably their recording of Lead Belly's "Goodnight, Irene", which topped the charts for 13 weeks in 1950. Members of the Weavers were blacklisted during the McCarthy Era. In the 1960s, he re-emerged on the public scene as a prominent singer of protest music in support of international disarmament, civil rights, counterculture and environmental causes.
A prolific songwriter, his best-known songs include "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" (with Joe Hickerson), "If I Had a Hammer (The Hammer Song)" (with Lee Hays of the Weavers), and "Turn! Turn! Turn!" (lyrics adapted from Ecclesiastes), which have been recorded by many artists both in and outside the folk revival movement and are sung throughout the world. "Flowers" was a hit recording for the Kingston Trio (1962); Marlene Dietrich, who recorded it in English, German and French (1962); and Johnny Rivers (1965). "If I Had a Hammer" was a hit for Peter, Paul & Mary (1962) and Trini Lopez (1963), while the Byrds had a number one hit with "Turn! Turn! Turn!" in 1965.
Fare Thee Well may refer to:
"Fare Thee Well" is an 1816 poem by George Gordon Byron, 6th Baron Byron.
Lord Byron married and fathered a child with Annabella Milbanke in 1815, but they separated in 1816. In March of that year, Byron composed "Fare Thee Well" and enclosed a note that said, "Dearest Bell --- I send you the first verses that ever I attempted to write upon you, and perhaps the last that I may ever write at all."
In April he signed a Deed of Separation and added the following notation . . .
Byron left England and never saw his wife or daughter again.
"Fare Thee Well" is an 18th-century English folk ballad, in which a lover bids farewell before setting off on a journey. The lyrics include a dialogue between the lovers.
A version by Mary Chapin Carpenter, entitled "10,000 Miles", was used in the movie Fly Away Home (1996).
The first published version of the song appeared in Roxburghe Ballads dated 1710; the lyrics were there given the title "The True Lover's Farewell". The song has been recorded, notably by Nic Jones as "Ten Thousand Miles", as well as by Joan Baez on her 1960 debut album, Mary Black, Eliza Carthy, Chad & Jeremy, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Liam Clancy, Marianne Faithfull and Kate Rusby and as "Ten Thousand Miles" by Michael Holliday, Burl Ives, Molina and Roberts, June Tabor and Marcus Mumford.
"Fare Thee Well" shares several lyrics which parallel those of Robert Burns' "A Red, Red Rose". The lyrics are also strikingly similar to a folk song titled, "My Dear Mary Ann" that dates back to the mid-19th century. Similarities include the meter and rhyme scheme, as well as the alternative title of "Ten Thousand Miles". Lyrical similarities include the opening line, "Fare thee well my own true love", "Ten thousand miles or more" (word-for-word matches), and the question of seeing a dove or other bird crying for its love. The subjects of the songs are practically identical: Lovers mourning their separation and longing to return to one another.
Sag mir, wo die Blumen sind, Where have all the flowers gone, long time passing? Where have all the flowers gone, long time ago? Where have all the flowers gone? Young girls have picked them everyone. Oh, when will we ever learn? Oh, when will we ever learn? Where have all the young girls gone, long time passing? Where have all the young girls gone, long time ago? Where have all the young girls gone? Gone for husbands everyone. Oh, when will we ever learn? Oh, when will we ever learn? Where have all the young men gone, long time passing, Where have all the young men gone, long time ago, Where have all the young men gone, They are all in uniform, When will they ever learn? When will they ever learn?

“These are my ‘hits?’ Columbia Records picked the title of this album, not me. Now read the truth,” Pete Seeger says at the beginning of the liner notes he has written for the back of this New collection. It is a very good collection: “Little Boxes,” “Wimoweh,” “Where Have All the Flowers Gone,” “Bells of Rhymney,” “Turn, Turn, Turn,” “Guantanamera,” among others. They were recorded in concert. Seeger goes on to explain that these aren’t his hits, but things that he has come across, some of which he has put tunes to or to words and other people have taken up and made hits. The one extraordinary case is when he made a hit of Malvina Reynold’s song (“Little Boxes”) in his own version. If you are in the mood for remenisce or authenticity, this album is an adequate, reasonable and cheap way of...

On July 26, 1956, the House of Representatives voted 373 to 9 to cite Pete Seeger and seven others (including playwright Arthur Miller) for contempt, as they failed to cooperate with House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) in their attempts to investigate alleged subversives and communists. Pete Seeger testified before the HUAC in 1955. In one of Pete's darkest moments, when his personal freedom, his career, and his safety were in jeopardy, a flash of inspiration ignited this song. The song was stirred by a passage from Mikhail Sholokhov's novel "And Quie Flows the Don". Around the world the song traveled and in 1962 at a UNICEF concert in Germany, Marlene Dietrich, Academy Award-nominated German-born American actress, first performed the song in French, as "Qui peut dire ou vont l...

Today, May 3 2009, is Pete Seeger's 90th birthday. I can't make the big concert at Madison Square Garden to celebrate it, so this is my small tribute to him, an amazing man with an amazing wife, and an amazing life. This was performed at the "We Are One" Presidential Inaugural Concert, January 19, 2009. The song was written by Woodie Guthrie in 1940, first recorded by him in 1944 at Folkway Records, but not released until 1951. A song performed by God (God/ Chuck Shurley/ Carver Edlund). This was taken from a scene in #Supernatural "Don't Call Me Shurley" 11x20. I do not own any rights. If I had wings like Noah's dove I'd fly up the river to the one I love Fare thee well, oh honey, fare thee well I knew a man who was long and tall He moved his body like a cannon ball Oh fare thee well, oh honey, fare thee well I remember one night in the drizzlin' rain Around my heart I felt an achin' pain Fare thee well, oh honey, fare thee well One of these days it won't be long You'll call my name and I'll be gone Fare thee well, oh honey, fare thee well Fare thee well

Chorus:
Seventy miles of wind and spray,
Seventy miles of water,
Seventy miles of open bay--
It's a garbage dump.
What's that stinky creek out there,
Down behind the slum's back stair
Sludgy puddle, sad and gray?
Why man, that's San Francisco Bay.
(CHORUS)
Big Solano and the Montecelle'
Ferry boats, I know them well,
Creek and groan in their muddy graves
Remembering San Francisco Bay
(CHORUS)
Joe Ortega and the Spanish crew
Sailed across the ocean blue
Came into the mighty Bay
Stood on the decks and cried, "Ole"
(CHORUS)
Fill it here, fill it here.
Docks and tidelands disappear,
Shaky houses on the quaky ground
The builder, he's Las Vegas bound
(CHORUS)
Dump the garbage in the Bay
City fathers say, "Okay,
When cries of anguish fill the air,
We'll be off on the Riviere."
