Crow was born in Othello, Washington in the United States of America, but spent his childhood in Kirkland, Washington. After high school, he briefly played sousaphone at the University of Washington in Seattle. When he joined the Army in 1946, he played baritone horn, trombone, and drums in the army band until 1949. After leaving the Army, he returned to the University of Washington in Seattle and played in a jazz quartet after hours. In January 1950, Crow moved to New York City, briefly studied valve trombone with Lennie Tristano, and met many New York musicians and artists. He bought an old Kay bass and taught himself to play what would become his primary instrument. In 1953 he purchased an old French bass which has been his jazz voice until the present. And in 1975 he returned to playing a brass instrument, the tuba, for the first time in twenty-five years, doubling with string bass on several Broadway shows. The tuba is now his hobby.
"Moscow Nights" (Russian:Подмосковные вечера, tr.Podmoskovnie vechera) is a Russian song, one of those best known outside its homeland.
The song was originally created as "Leningradskie Vechera" ("Leningrad Nights") by composer Vasily Solovyov-Sedoi and poet Mikhail Matusovsky in 1955 (when both had well-established careers), but at the request of the Soviet Ministry of Culture, the "Подмосковные вечера" (transliterated as "Podmoskovnye Vechera"; more or less "Evenings in Moscow Oblast") version was prepared, with corresponding changes to the lyrics.
In 1956, Podmoskovnye Vechera was recorded by Vladimir Troshin, a young actor of the Moscow Art Theatre, for a documentary about the athletic competition Spartakiad of the Peoples of the RSFSR, for a scene where the participants rest in Podmoskovye, the Moscow suburbs. It went little noticed in the context of the film, but gained considerably popularity thanks to radio broadcasts.
In 1957, the song won both the international song contest and the first prize at the World Festival of Youth and Students held in Moscow, quite to the surprise of its creators. The song spread around the world, achieving particular popularity in mainland China; Van Cliburn's 1958 piano performance of the tune contributed to this international spread.
Moskva (Москва, Moscow) is a Russian monthly literary magazine founded in 1957 in Moscow.
History
Moskva magazine was established in 1957, originally as an organ of the RSFSR Union of Writers and its Moscow department. Its first editor was Nikolay Atarov (1957-1958), succeeded by Yevgeny Popovkin (1958-1968). It was during his time that (in December 1966 - January 1967 issues) for the first time ever Mikhail Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita was published.
The magazine's third editor-in-chief Mikhail Alekseyev has brought its selling figures to record highs (775 thousand in 1989) and made history too by publishing Nikolay Karamzin's History of the Russian State (1989-1990) for the first time since 1917. In the 1990s and 2000s, under Vladimir Krupin (1990-1992) and Leonid Borodin (1992-2008), Moskva, along with Nash Sovremennik magazine and Alexander Prokhanov’s Den/Zavtra newspapers, moved into the vanguard of the so-called 'spiritual opposition' movement. In 1993 the subtitle, The Magazine of Russian Culture, was added to the magazine’s title.
