Masuleh in Fuman County, Gilan Province, Iran
Masouleh is located about 1,050 meters above sea level, but the range of elevation varies by over a hundred meters in the village. The roofs of houses on lower tiers are used as courtyards for houses on the tiers above them. In some cases, public streets are laid out along interconnected roofs. The organic layout and steep stairs have made motor vehicles impractical, so they are banned in the village.

This is a heavenly city called Fuman where the mountains are covered with green grass and the land is most fertile. This area includes Fuman city and its surroundings in the plains of Gilan, , amidst gardens and rice fields.
Fuman is an old Persian word which means “thinking paradise.“ and we can divide Fuman’s inhabitants come from two ethnic communities - the Gilaki and the Taleshi.
Farmers go to the tea shrubs with scissors and like a skilled hair stylist snip the tea leaves quickly and put them in special bags. The fresh smell of the tea leaves fill the air and make working under the hot sun bearable for the farmer.
When your lungs are filled with this air, your eyes only see the green of the grasses and the blue of the sky and your ears only hear the birds singing, and there’s no place in your heart for darkness and disappointment. After a hard day of work, you can enjoy sipping your tea surrounded by green tea bushes in a spirit of calm and love.
Hesami Castle is a historical castle which is made high up in Fuman’s forests. Some experts think that this castle was built during the Sassanid dynasty.
This castle which was the base for Esmaeilian fighters has a wall with a 1500m width. During archaeological research, lots of steps leading to the top of the castle walls were discovered which is why this castle is known as “Hezarpeleh” or “Thousand steps castle”.
Tourists, after passing the surrounding forest by going up the stairs, arrive at the top of the castle, where they can and they enjoy the mesmerizing views of their green surroundings.
Nearby is a historic village named Masouleh that is popular with tourists. It is foggy, with cool summers and snowy winters.
Here, the homes are terraced so that the roof of one home is the floor of another. It’s a community with great neighborhood spirit, and lots of souvenir shops, so you won’t go away empty-handed.
To get to Fuman and its environs, follow these directions:
From Rasht, take the Rasht-Fuman road, passing through Bazaar Jomee, Fuman
To reach Masouleh village, first go to Fuman and then take the Fuman-Masouleh road.
Fuman awaits you.

Masuleh About this sound pronunciation is a city in and the capital of Sardar-e Jangal District, in Fuman County, Gilan Province, Iran. It was founded in the 10th century AD.
Masuleh architecture is unique. The buildings have been built into the mountain and are interconnected. Courtyards and roofs both serve as pedestrian areas similar to streets. Masuleh does not allow any motor vehicles to enter, due to its unique layout. It is the only city in Iran with such a prohibition. However, the small streets and many stairs simply wouldn't make it possible for vehicles to enter.
The spectacular architecture of Masuleh is popularly known as "The yard of the building above is the roof of the building below".
Yellow clay coats the exterior of most buildings in Masuleh. This allows for better visibility in the fog.
