How Iraq Became Iraq: the British Mandate after World War I
British Mandate in Iraq after World War I: Mandatory Iraq was a period where the country was owned by Britain. They installed their own government and their own monarchy to hide behind, but they were the ones pulling the strings. They maintained order with brutal bombings from the Royal Air Force so that they could keep the oil flowing for as long as possible.

Mandatory Iraq
The Kingdom of Iraq under British Administration or Mandatory Iraq was created in 1921 following the 1920 Iraqi Revolt against the proposed British Mandate of Mesopotamia, and enacted via the 1922 Anglo-Iraqi Treaty.
Faisal ibn Husayn, who had been proclaimed King of Syria by a Syrian National Congress in Damascus in March 1920, was ejected by the French in July of the same year. Faisal was then granted by the British the territory of Iraq, to rule it as a kingdom, with the British Royal Air Force retaining certain military control, though de facto; the territory remained under British administration until 1932.

07 June 2017 The battle for Mosul Body armour mandatory
In July 2014, Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi declared the movement's caliphate the Great Mosque of al-Nuri in the old part of the Iraqi city of Mosul. Last October, Iraqi troops, Kurdish Peshmerga fighters, Sunni Arab tribesmen, and Shia militiamen supported by a US-led coalition of warplanes and military advisers launched an offensive to retake the city that is still going on in the historic old city area. It involves the worst kind of street-to-street fighting and aerial bombardment.
A number of Bangkok-based journalists have been involved in the coverage, including Tony Cheng and Florian Witulski who recorded knuckle-whitening scenes under fire for China Global Television Network (CGTV). Another cameraman, the BBC's Nik Millard, has filmed conflicts since the war in the for...

In this lecture Anna Feuer examines the “environmental imaginary” that contributed to the particular appeal of the RAF’s air control scheme in Iraq under the British mandate.
This free lecture is part of the RAF Museum's Research Lecture Programme. If you would like to support the RAF Museum, you can make a donation at: https://support.rafmuseum.org/Donate-Now
TALK OUTLINE
How do counterinsurgents assess and respond to challenges posed by the natural environment? How does technological development alter their perceptions of the battlefield, and what are the consequences for counterinsurgency strategy, civilian security, and environmental wellbeing?
This lecture—part of a larger research project on the relationship between nature and technology in counterinsurgency wars—examines the “environmental imaginary” that contributed to the particular appeal of the RAF’s air control scheme in Iraq under the British mandate.
Drawing on archival materials from the RAF Museum, the National Archives, and the Imperial War Museum, as well as memoirs and journalistic accounts, it demonstrates how the RAF’s case for air control depended upon specific narratives of the Iraqi environment that both emerged from and shaped British experiences in the country during the Mesopotamian Campaign and the mandate period.
Air control advocates affirmed perceptions of Iraq as an empty desert ideally suited to aerial surveillance, despite considerable variation in the country's terrain; at the same time, they pointed to Iraq’s harsh climate and seemingly illegible landscape to argue for the necessity of mechanization, as the airplane promised to overcome all topographical and climatic obstacles.
The rhetorical force of air control ideology relied, to a significant extent, on its explicit contrast with the environmental hardships faced by ground troops; the airplane would relieve colonial forces from what seemed intolerable terrain and weather conditions.
The notion that counterinsurgency and colonial policing operations could be abstracted from the physical battlefield itself represents a profoundly consequential legacy of British military strategy in Iraq.
In justifying the air control scheme, the RAF took a first, crucial step toward realizing the military fantasy of remote warfare, directed from secure airbases, waged by machines that seemed to make irrelevant the physical constraints of topography and climate.
This lecture was first broadcast in 2021.

Another cameraman, the BBC's Nik Millard, has filmed conflicts since the war in the former Yugoslavia, and latterly worked extensively with correspondents like Jeremy Bowen, Lyse Doucet, and Quentin Somerville in Mosul and throughout the Middle East.
Few dispute that today's Iraq and Syria rank among the most dangerous journalism assignments imaginable. Personal protection is essential, and proper body armour at all times is a requirement of both media employers and insurers. This has led to a series of wrangles with the authorities in Thailand where body armour and gas masks -- personal protective equipment (PPE) -- is classified under a 1987 law as weaponry that must be regulated. Cheng and Witulski were stopped recently at Suvarnabhumi International Airport on their way back to Mosul with PPE in their check-in luggage. Cheng has been formally charged with an offense that technically could carry a five-year prison sentence. He has been released on 100,000-baht bail. Journalists from Hong Kong and the Czech Republic have also been charged previously, but the first case was dropped.
A number of journalists from around the world have written in to the FCCT about their experiences covering Mosul and the Middle East, and the indispensability of PPE. Come to the FCCT and hear first hand about one of the world's most perilous stories, and the problems some journalists must surmount to cover it.
Come to the FCCT and hear first hand about one of the world's most perilous stories, and the problems some journalists must surmount to cover it.
Panelists
Nik Millard is one of the BBC's most seasoned cameramen and recipient of a number of industry accolades, including a prestigious British Royal Television Award as camera operator of the year in 2006. A veteran of
Afghanistan, Bosnia, and the Middle East, Bangkok-based Millard's recent assignments have included Iraq.
Tony Cheng has worked over a 20-year career with the BBC's Chinese and World Service, and was for five years Al Jazeera's bureau chief in Beijing. Working more independently of late, his assignments have taken him to Syria, Libya, Afghanistan, the Ukraine, and Iraq, often for China Global Television Network (formerly CCTV), among others.
Florian Witulski is a journalist and documentary cameraman who has based himself in Bangkok since 2008 covering Asia and the Middle East for Al Jazeera, BBC, CGTN/CCTV, The Economist and others. His hostile environment assignments include Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq, where he has been following the rise and fall of Islamic State since 2014.

Welcome again to @MythicalTalesFolklore

Hello friends! Welcome to a new Happy Learning video.
Today, we’re going to learn about of the first and most important of human civilisations, today, we’re going to learn about… Mesopotamia!
The word Mesopotamia means “between two rivers” in greek! So this civilisation was named because it was situated between two rivers: Tigris and Euphrates.
Within these fertile lands, the first ever city-states were born, four thousand years before Christ! The most important cities were Ur, Urk and Lagash.
These city-states were independent from each other, like small different countries. They were surrounded by a great wall to protect themselves. The Ziggurat, a temple where priests lived, was built in the center of the city. Here, they controlled the trade, agriculture and taxes. The supreme priest had the city's political and religious power
Agricultural fields spread across these cities, which were traversed by irrigation channels that used the river’s water to water cultivations and animals would drink. Most of the city’s citizens were farmers and shepherds, but there were also artesans that sold their own products at the markets.
Because of their well-being, both cities began to grow, but so did the conflicts between them due to the control of land.
These battles arose military leaders that little by little turned into monarchs, Kings!
Between the years three thousand a one thousand B.C., Mesopotamian lands were conquered by various towns or cities. The first one was the Akkadian Empire, then the Babylonian Empire, followed by the Assyrian Empire and finally the Persian Empire.
So we’ve got to know part of Mesopotamia’s history, but do you know why it has been such an important civilisation for humanity?
Well there are many reasons! The first one is, because Mesopotamia was where, around 3500 B.C., the first written language was found. At first, it was composed by simple drawings called pictograms, look at these examples.
Over time, these drawings were simplified and started to transform into symbols, which is what we know today as cuneiform (cuniform) writing. As you can see, this writing was made with a wooden punch over clay boards.
Another great contribution mesopotamia made was its art. They created the arc and vault, that helped them construct magnificent temples and palaces. To decorate the walls and doors within these temples and palaces they used paintings like this one, where the King Ashurbanipal is hunting lions.
By the way, before we say goodbye, Do you know what country Mesopotamia is today?
Well it’s… Irak! you can see it here.

Welcome again to @MythicalTalesFolklore
Erra: The Forgotten God of War, Plague, and Chaos
For centuries, the gods of Mesopotamia—Marduk, Enlil, and Ishtar—were honored with temples and hymns, but one god inspired only fear: Erra, the god of war, pestilence, and destruction. Unlike the deities of order and creation, Erra thrived in the shadows, bringing devastation with his fury.
In this gripping documentary, we uncover the terrifying legacy of Erra—how his wrath shaped ancient Mesopotamian civilization, inspired rituals of fear and restraint, and echoed across time in later myths and religious texts. From war-torn battlefields to cities ravaged by plague, his influence never truly faded.
Join us as we delve into:
🔥 Erra’s origins and his role in Mesopotamian mythology
⚔️ The horrors of his wrath—war, disease, and chaos
🕊️ The desperate rituals performed to keep him at bay
🌍 His echoes in later mythologies, from Ares to Shiva
⚠️ How his presence lingers in history, literature, and modern times
CHAPTERS:
0:00 Opening Story
1:23 Introduction: The Forgotten God of Destruction
3:49 Origins and Domain: The Plaguebringer and the Unleasher of War
7:35 The Epic of Erra: The Day Marduk Was Overthrown
14:31 The Fear and Worship of Erra
16:49 Legacy: The Enduring Shadow of Erra
19:31 Conclusion: The Eternal Fear of Chaos
Is Erra merely a forgotten god, or does his shadow still loom over humanity? Watch now and uncover the chilling truth.

Of all the different “Cradles of Civilization” around the world, perhaps no other is as important and influential to the development of human civilization as Mesopotamia. Literally translated from Sumerian to mean “the land between the rivers,” Mesopotamia refers to the valleys and plains in between and around the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, which are located in modern-day Iraq. Directly surrounding Mesopotamia, stretching as far west as Israel and Egypt and all the way east to modern-day Iran, is the Fertile Crescent, named for the remarkable fertility of the land that made this region an ideal place for human civilization to prosper.
This video covers the Sumerians, Assyrian history, Ur, Babylon, Gilgamesh, Hammurabi and the Persian Empire.
