Long Beach (Pacific Electric)
The Long Beach Line was a major interurban railway operated by the Pacific Electric Railway between Los Angeles and Long Beach, California via Florence, Watts, and Compton. Service began in 1902 and lasted until 1961, the last line of the system to be replaced by buses. However, the Southern Pacific Transportation Company continued to operate freight on the tracks, as the Union Pacific Railroad still does north of Dominguez Junction, and in 1990 the Southern California Rapid Transit District opened the Blue Line light rail along the same right-of-way.
In addition to the Long Beach service, the line served as a trunk for a number of other interurban lines stretching to Whittier, Yorba Linda, Fullerton, Santa Ana, Balboa, San Pedro, and Redondo Beach. It was four tracks wide north of the junction at Watts, with local service on the outer tracks and long-distance trains bypassing the local stations on the inner tracks.
Operations
Trains left the Pacific Electric Building on an elevated structure that extended east to San Pedro Street south of 6th Street. They turned south on San Pedro, then east on 9th Street to Hooper Avenue, where private right-of-way began, initially paralleling Long Beach Avenue to the west (the current Blue Line enters this right-of-way at Washington Boulevard). The line re-entered the public streets in Long Beach, where it followed Long Beach Boulevard south and Ocean Boulevard west to the Morgan Avenue Yard (Morgan Avenue was approximately in the center of the Los Angeles River Flood Control Channel). Private right-of-way continued across Long Beach Boulevard all the way to Balboa.

Long Beach, California
Long Beach is a city in Los Angeles County in Southern California, on the Pacific coast of the United States. The city is the 36th-largest city in the United States and the seventh-largest in California. As of 2010, its population was 462,257. In addition, Long Beach is the second largest city in the Greater Los Angeles Area (after Los Angeles) and a principal city of the Los Angeles metropolitan area.
The Port of Long Beach is the United States' second busiest container port and one of the world's largest shipping ports. The city also maintains a large oil industry with wells located both underground and offshore. Manufacturing sectors include those in aircraft, car parts, electronic and audiovisual equipment, and home furnishings.
Downtown Long Beach is located approximately 22 miles (35 km) south of Downtown Los Angeles, though the two cities border each other for several miles on Long Beach's southwestern portion. Long Beach borders Orange County on its southeast edge.

Long Beach Boulevard station
Long Beach Boulevard or Long Beach/I-105 is a Los Angeles County Metro Rail station on the Green Line. It is located in the center median of Century Freeway at the interchange with Long Beach Boulevard in Lynwood, California. It is not necessarily named for the city of Long Beach, California (served by the Blue Line) as Metro Rail usually names most of their stations after the nearest major cross streets. In this case, the station, located in Lynwood, is named for Long Beach Boulevard which indeed travels down to Long Beach. The original name for this station was Long Beach Blvd/I-105 and it may still be used in some places.

This short, silent film shows "The Big Red Cars" of the Pacific Electric railroad in Los Angeles. It was shot by Leo Caloia, an amateur cameraman who filmed many subjects in Southern California in the mid to late 1940s. The start of the film shows interurban trolley car 1535 on Long Beach Blvd. This "blimp" car was typically mated with 1537. Car 1519 is seen at 2:08 and 1529 at 3:21. The Los Angeles-to-Long Beach passenger rail line was the longest-serving of all the Pacific Electric routes, running from July 4, 1903, until April 9, 1961. The system shared dual gauge track with the 3 ft 6 in (1,067 mm) narrow gauge Los Angeles Railway, "Yellow Car," or "LARy" system on Main Street in downtown Los Angeles (directly in front of the 6th and Main terminal), on 4th Street, and along Hawthorne Boulevard south of downtown Los Angeles toward the cities of Hawthorne, Gardena, and Torrance.

*They were earmarked for The Peninsular Railway Co., Southern Pacific’s vest pocket interurban system radiating out of San Jose.
PE #1044 was the last “in line” of wooden interurban car from the famed “Ten” series (of the 1001-1044 class) made by The Jewett Car Co. They were all scraped. Except #1000 and #1001, they survived and are preserved at the OERM. 1044 was a combine between 1933 and 1943. PE changed 1044’s number to 1363.
PE 1200 class
The entire 1200-class of interurbans (built in 1916), and most notably the San Berdoo 1200s, were the pinnacle of interurban travel in California. The six "BUTTERFLY 12s (1216 - 1221) were the apex of PE's entire fleet of interurban cars. They were fast, comfortable, almost indestructible cars.
The 12s were born of necessity. The original plans for the fast 1200-class of interurbans were to be constructed of wood and would have been a "Super Ten Hundred." But the tragic 1913 accident at Vineyard Junction between two trains of wood cars changed interurban construction on the Pacific Electric forever. Plans for the wood 12s were discarded and the all-steel 1200 class of cars was created. A restroom window lacks, would this indicate that the film was taken after 1942? I'm also unsure if there's a hood fitted over the headlamp (if so, it's 1943 or later).

Major rail abandonments occurred on a yearly bases, starting with the Venice Short Line in 1950, the entire Northern District in 1951, the San Fernando Valley Line in 1952, Santa Monica Boulevard line in 1953, Hollywood Boulevard in 1954, and the Glendale-Burbank line in 1955. Surplus Hollywood cars were stored everywhere on the Western and Southern Districts. Some Hollywood cars had been sold for continued operation elsewhere, but the time had come for the disposal of these wonderful cars, regardless of the age or condition. PE's magnificent 1200-class interurbans were hauled away to Kaiser Steel in Fontana for cremation in 1951.
This places this film anywhere prior to 1951.

However, the Clyde Beatty Circus train narrows our timing a bit further, since this rail road show started in 1947. Which places the footage somewhere between 1947 and 1951. According to the experts at the PERYHS (see below) we're looking at 1947 or -48.

CLYDE BEATTY CIRCUS
In 1947 Beatty took out his own "Clyde Beatty Circus" which was a rail road show. 1956 was a bad season for circuses. The economy had forced Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus to leave their tents behind for the next season and begin showing in buildings. The Clyde Beatty circus ended that year in bankruptcy forcing Beatty to sell the show.

This short, silent film shows "The Big Red Cars" of the Pacific Electric railroad in Los Angeles. It was shot by Leo Caloia, an amateur cameraman who filmed many subjects in Southern California in the mid to late 1940s. The start of the film shows interurban trolley car 1535 on Long Beach Blvd. This "blimp" car was typically mated with 1537. Car 1519 is seen at 2:08 and 1529 at 3:21. The Los Angeles-to-Long Beach passenger rail line was the longest-serving of all the Pacific Electric routes, running from July 4, 1903, until April 9, 1961. Ironically, it was both the first and last interurban passenger line of the P.E. system.
The Pacific Electric Railway Company, nicknamed the Red Cars, was a privately owned mass transit system in Southern California consisting of electrically powered streetcars, interurban cars, and buses and was the largest electric railway system in the world in the 1920s. Organized around the city centers of Los Angeles and San Bernardino, it connected cities in Los Angeles County, Orange County, San Bernardino County and Riverside County.
The system shared dual gauge track with the 3 ft 6 in (1,067 mm) narrow gauge Los Angeles Railway, "Yellow Car," or "LARy" system on Main Street in downtown Los Angeles (directly in front of the 6th and Main terminal), on 4th Street, and along Hawthorne Boulevard south of downtown Los Angeles toward the cities of Hawthorne, Gardena, and Torrance.

Black-White silent footage of the former Pacific Electric street trams in the greater Los Angeles region.
This video shows (both on- and off ride) Macy Street work shop and its surrounding scenery, Lone Hill (Covina), Los Cerritos, and workers on PE freight locomotive 1627. There's also the official CLYDE BEATTY CIRCUS train (sidetracked -parked, waiting for new destination/show?), and a Pacific Electric Diesel engine passing by pulling a freight train. The ride starts at Macy Street Yard and moves east along the Baldwin Line.
From 1901 to 1961, the Pacific Electric Railway — or the "Red Car" — operated as one of Southern California’s primary mass transit options, connecting Orange and Los Angeles Counties in a large series of rail corridors.
There's more equipment to be seen, but so far we identified the following:

*They were earmarked for The Peninsular Railway Co., Southern Pacific’s vest pocket interurban system radiating out of San Jose.
PE #1044 was the last “in line” of wooden interurban car from the famed “Ten” series (of the 1001-1044 class) made by The Jewett Car Co. They were all scraped. Except #1000 and #1001, they survived and are preserved at the OERM. 1044 was a combine between 1933 and 1943. PE changed 1044’s number to 1363.
PE 1200 class
The entire 1200-class of interurbans (built in 1916), and most notably the San Berdoo 1200s, were the pinnacle of interurban travel in California. The six "BUTTERFLY 12s (1216 - 1221) were the apex of PE's entire fleet of interurban cars. They were fast, comfortable, almost indestructible cars.
The 12s were born of necessity. The original plans for the fast 1200-class of interurbans were to be constructed of wood and would have been a "Super Ten Hundred." But the tragic 1913 accident at Vineyard Junction between two trains of wood cars changed interurban construction on the Pacific Electric forever. Plans for the wood 12s were discarded and the all-steel 1200 class of cars was created. A restroom window lacks, would this indicate that the film was taken after 1942? I'm also unsure if there's a hood fitted over the headlamp (if so, it's 1943 or later).

Major rail abandonments occurred on a yearly bases, starting with the Venice Short Line in 1950, the entire Northern District in 1951, the San Fernando Valley Line in 1952, Santa Monica Boulevard line in 1953, Hollywood Boulevard in 1954, and the Glendale-Burbank line in 1955. Surplus Hollywood cars were stored everywhere on the Western and Southern Districts. Some Hollywood cars had been sold for continued operation elsewhere, but the time had come for the disposal of these wonderful cars, regardless of the age or condition. PE's magnificent 1200-class interurbans were hauled away to Kaiser Steel in Fontana for cremation in 1951.

However, the Clyde Beatty Circus train narrows our timing a bit further, since this rail road show started in 1947. Which places the footage somewhere between 1947 and 1951. According to the experts at the PERYHS (see below) we're looking at 1947 or -48.

CLYDE BEATTY CIRCUS
In 1947 Beatty took out his own "Clyde Beatty Circus" which was a rail road show. 1956 was a bad season for circuses. The economy had forced Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus to leave their tents behind for the next season and begin showing in buildings. The Clyde Beatty circus ended that year in bankruptcy forcing Beatty to sell the show.

Long Beach (Pacific Electric)
The Long Beach Line was a major interurban railway operated by the Pacific Electric Railway between Los Angeles and Long Beach, California via Florence, Watts, and Compton. Service began in 1902 and lasted until 1961, the last line of the system to be replaced by buses. However, the Southern Pacific Transportation Company continued to operate freight on the tracks, as the Union Pacific Railroad still does north of Dominguez Junction, and in 1990 the Southern California Rapid Transit District opened the Blue Line light rail along the same right-of-way.
In addition to the Long Beach service, the line served as a trunk for a number of other interurban lines stretching to Whittier, Yorba Linda, Fullerton, Santa Ana, Balboa, San Pedro, and Redondo Beach. It was four tracks wide north of the junction at Watts, with local service on the outer tracks and long-distance trains bypassing the local stations on the inner tracks.
Operations
Trains left the Pacific Electric Building on an elevated structure that extended east to San Pedro Street south of 6th Street. They turned south on San Pedro, then east on 9th Street to Hooper Avenue, where private right-of-way began, initially paralleling Long Beach Avenue to the west (the current Blue Line enters this right-of-way at Washington Boulevard). The line re-entered the public streets in Long Beach, where it followed Long Beach Boulevard south and Ocean Boulevard west to the Morgan Avenue Yard (Morgan Avenue was approximately in the center of the Los Angeles River Flood Control Channel). Private right-of-way continued across Long Beach Boulevard all the way to Balboa.
