Lionel of Antwerp and the Entail of Edward III
This week: Lionel of Antwerp and the Entail of Edward III. Probably the least well-known of Edward III’s surviving sons. Lionel tried to rule Ireland on his father’s behalf. Tried is the operative word. While his life wasn’t a huge story, the lives of his daughter and descendants will play a huge role in the Wars of the Roses. I discuss Edward III’s entail, which excluded the descendants of Lionel, not that it stopped any of them from trying or succeeding at claiming the throne.

ISABEL NEVILLE, DUCHESS OF CLARENCE | Forgotten women of the Wars of the Roses | History Calling
ISABEL NEVILLE is one of the most frequently forgotten women of the Wars of the Roses; the multi-generational battle for the crown between different branches of the Plantagenet family, the Yorks and the Lancasters, which took place in 15th century England. Born at Warwick Castle in 1451, she was the eldest daughter of Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick (known as the King-maker) and Anne de Beauchamp. This made her a member of one of the most powerful and influential families of the day and a great heiress, but it also left her vulnerable to the changing fortunes of that family as her father’s shifting loyalties upended her life again and again.

In 1469 she was married to the King-maker’s first cousin, George, Duke of Clarence who was the younger brother of Edward IV and older brother of the future Richard III making Isabel the King’s sister-in-law. The marriage went expressly against the orders of King Edward though his mother, Cecily Neville, Duchess of York, may have agreed to it. The following year her husband and father were forced to flee England in 1470 after a failed coup against Edward. Isabel went with them and tragically lost her first child on the journey. This baby was either stillborn at sea outside Calais, or was born and died very quickly on the boat. She would go on to have two surviving children; a daughter named Margaret, later Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury who was executed by Henry VIII and a son named Edward, Earl of Warwick, who was executed by Henry VII.
Her younger sister was Anne Neville, who became the Lancastrian Princess of Wales through her first marriage. When she was widowed just weeks after the death of their father however, Anne was sent to live with George and Isabel with George keen to avoid her remarrying and taking her half of the Warwick inheritance to her second husband. Remarry she did though, to his brother, then known as Richard, Duke of Gloucester, making Isabel and Anne both sisters and sisters-in-law. Isabel didn’t live to see her sibling become Richard III’s queen however. She died in December 1476 at the age of just 25, probably from delayed childbirth complications. Her baby (a boy named Richard) died on 1 January 1477.
This video from History Calling will cover the life of Isabel Neville, Duchess of Clarence, England’s tragic and forgotten royal duchess and will help you with understanding the Wars of the Roses.

The White Queen: George Plantagenet's execution divides House York I 1x7
The White Queen (2013) scene: "We are the three sons of York. How can we be divided by one woman?"
George Plantagenet, duke of Clarence, was arrested and eventually executed for high treason by his older brother Edward IV, despite pleas for mercy from their family members. Much of what drove George to commit these acts was his hatred and fear of Elizabeth Woodville, and his lust for his brother's throne.
At the time, George was plotting with the French king to overthrow his brother, and publicly accusing his sister-in-law Elizabeth Woodville (the queen consort) of witchcraft and murder, but some historians believe that there was another reason why he was killed. Bishop Stillington was imprisoned at the same time as George, and he was the man who later revealed/claimed to Richard, duke o...

BIZARRE ROYAL EXECUTION of George Duke of Clarence | How Edward IV killed his brother | malmsey wine
How Edward IV KILLED HIS BROTHER is a strange story and the BIZARRE royal execution of George Duke of Clarence is the subject of today’s English royal history documentary from History Calling. This video will take you back to 1478 and to the middle of the Wars of the Roses, as Edward (who was constantly a King under threat) struggled to hold the throne he had taken from Henry VI. It will uncover a family at war with each other, look at the events leading up to George’s execution, explain why Edward IV killed his brother and (assuming the stories are true) why the...

On This Day: 18 February 1478 Execution of George, Duke of Clarence
George, Duke of Clarence was the brother between King Edward IV and King Richard III in the House of York. Perennially dissatisfied with his lot in life, however good it was, George was his own worst enemy. He was executed in private on this day in 1478. The method is not recorded, but a famous myth grew up around it. Does a portrait of his daughter offer a hidden clue to the truth?

Bishop Stillington was imprisoned at the same time as George, and he was the man who later revealed/claimed to Richard, duke of Gloucester that Edward IV was already married to a woman named Eleanor Talbot before he married Elizabeth Woodville. This meant that their marriage would be considered invalid and their children illegitimate, and George would be the rightful king. Some historians, such as Paul Murray Kendall, believe George had discovered this and that was the real reason why Edward had him executed and attainted (which meant his children could not inherit anything from him, including his duchy and his claim to the throne). George's children, Edward and Margaret, eventually inherited some lands and titles from their mother after George's death such as the earldom of Warwick and Salisbury, but they were never allowed to inherit anything from their father as a result of the attainder.
His execution drove a wedge between Edward IV and his other family members. Cecily Neville, his mother, and Richard duke of Gloucester, his other brother, avoided his court as much as they could for the rest of their lives. Contemporary chronicles recorded that the three brothers were so talented that if they were united tougher, they would be almost impossible to defeat, yet their infighting ultimately led to the collapse and defeat of their dynasty and the end of Plantagenet rule in England.

How Edward IV KILLED HIS BROTHER is a strange story and the BIZARRE royal execution of George Duke of Clarence is the subject of today’s English royal history documentary from History Calling. George and Edward were two of the three sons of York (the other being the future Richard III), but how did Edward become the King who killed his brother and is the famous tale that George was the royal drowned in wine really true? This video will take you back to 1478 and to the middle of the Wars of the Roses, as Edward (who was constantly a King under threat) struggled to hold the throne he had taken from Henry VI. It will uncover a family at war with each other, look at the events leading up to George’s execution, explain why Edward IV killed his brother and (assuming the stories are true) why the Duke was subjected to this bizarre cause of death. We’ll look at the original sources to see where the story that he was drowned in malmsey wine comes from and how trustworthy they are. George’s is one of the most famous royal executions in English history, but also one of the weirdest. This video will also include details of the influence Queen Elizabeth Woodville (aka The White Queen) had in the death of her brother-in-law and discuss how her mother-in-law and other brother-in-law, Cecily Neville, Duchess of York and Richard, Duke of Gloucester (the future Richard III) tried to save George from his fate. It will look at the effect the death of George’s wife, Isabel Neville, Duchess of Clarence, had on his behaviour and ultimate execution and ask whether a prophecy that a man whose name began with a G would succeed Edward IV played a part in the death of his brother George.
