The Most Well-Behaved Queen of England In History | Philippa of Hainault
Looking for a scandalous queen misinterpreted by history? You won't find her here. Philippa of Hainault in fact embodied the medieval romantic ideal of a queen consort, alongside her husband, King Edward III of England, who was also idolised. As a result of behaving well, much less is known of Philippa than her more infamous mother-in-law, Isabella of France. This video looks at Philippa's many achievements, her successful marriage, and the way in which her kindness and gentle nature helped heal a country tired or royal turmoil...

The proof she was a melanated Queen was how she was described.
The lady whom we saw has not uncomely hair, betwixt blue-black and brown. Her head is clean-shaped; her forehead high and broad, and standing somewhat forward. Her face narrows between the eyes, and the lower part of her face is still more narrow and slender than her forehead. Her eyes are blackish-brown and deep. Her nose is fairly smooth and even, save that it is somewhat broad at the tip and also flattened, and yet it is no snub-nose. Her nostrils are also broad, her mouth fairly wide. *15 August 1369* ✧ Philippa of Hainault dies at around the age of 55, at Windsor.
Philippa of Hainault [1313–1369] was a pious, wise, and generous lady, a most affectionate mother, a steadfast wife, and greatly loved by her people, due to her gentleness and compassion. When faced with many trials during her life, the balance between her familial and royal duties remained stable. She was the patron of the religious community and hospital, St Katharine by the Tower, of many scholars; Queen’s College, Oxford, was founded in her honour. The queen also influenced the king to take an interest in the nation’s commercial expansion, and acted briefly as his regent in 1346. For forty-one years, Philippa fulfilled her duty as queen consort, by serving the crown diligently and faithfully — amidst a turbulent and stirring time in English history — proving to be the very model of Medieval queenship.
Despite their suffering and hunger, the people of England found time to mourn their queen. The chancellor of England pointed out how _ʻno Christian king or other lord in the world ever had so noble and gracious a lady for his wife (…)ʼ_ Jean Froissart called Philippa _ʻthe most courteous, noble and liberal queen that ever reigned in her timeʼ,_ and had stated on an earlier occasion how the English exclaimed _ʻLong live the good Philippa of Hainault [la bonne Phelippe de Hainnau], queen of England, our dear and dread lady, who brought to us and to England honour, profit, grace and tranquility.ʼ_ The author of the Brut wrote that Philippa was _ʻa full noble and good womanʼ._ He tended to refer to her as _ʻthe good lady and queen.ʼ_ – Kathryn Warner_
_"Faire Philippe, William Hainault's child, and younger daughter deare,
Of roseate hue and beauty bright, in tomb lies hilled here ;
This Philippe, flowered in gifts full rare and treasures of the mind,
In beauty bright, religion, faith, to all and each most kind."_

Her lips somewhat full, and especially the lower lip. Her teeth which have fallen and grown again are white enough, but the rest are not so white. Her ears and chin are comely enough. Her neck, shoulders, and all her body are well set and unmaimed; and nought is amiss so far as a man may see. Moreover, she is brown of skin all over, and much like her father; and in all things, she is pleasant enough, as it seems to us....
