The Kowloon Walled City in Hong Kong was once considered the densest settlement in the world. The sprawling neighbourhood was often characterised as a lawless enclave with poor living conditions, criminal activity and a thriving black market, trading anything from pirated goods to drugs and sex. It was demolished in 1994, but its legacy lives on through the memories of its former residents. Thirty years after it was torn down, former residents and others who worked there shared some of their most vivid recollections of what was known as the “City of Darkness”.

Former Kowloon Walled City resident reacts to STRAY!
Since its release, video game Stray has been a huge hit. Players follow a cute ginger cat escaping an underground city, inspired by Hong Kong’s Kowloon Walled City, a high-rise squatter camp that once housed 50,000 people demolished in 1994. Did the game look at all like the former glories of historic enclaves? Let’s find out.

Kowloon Walled City: Hong Kong's City of Darkness
Check my other channel Biographics! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClnDI2sdehVm1zm_LmUHsjQ
Imagine, if you will, a city of eternal night. A place so intensely crowded that sunlight never penetrates its alleyways. Overhead, wires dangle from the ceilings. Neon signs fizz in doorways. All around you, 33,000 people are crammed into self-built apartments barely 10m square, while overhead great airships rumble through sky. Is this a vision from the future? The setting, perhaps, for some dystopian sci-fi novel?

Kowloon Walled City Documentary (English Subtitles)
Credits go to cameraman Hamdani Milas. Christina Wesemann for creation and direction of the film and also to Hugo Portisch for production.
Milas was one of the people that helped filmed this 1989 documentary about the city. I spoke with him recently and he said that he is interested in a follow up video of some sort so we may expect something new on the way.
He mentioned how it was an incredibly tough shoot. They were a five person crew; himself as cinematographer, a camera assistant, focus-puller, sound recordist, a researcher, production assistant and the director, and a very nice Austrian lady who was most willing to collaborate and listen to crew suggestions.
They shot for 6 days continuously, 10-12 hours a day, at the height of the summer of 1987. He mentioned how it smelled ver...

I don't know how to cry
Does any one these days
Know what's real
Won't you take me by the hand
I didn't want to feel
Cuz life felt too hard
Now its all a game that I don't understand
Wake up
Live someone else's dream
Smile smile
Cuz they're all watching
Shakeup shakedown
They can't hear you scream
Smile smile
Can't you hear me sing?
I don't know how to feel
Does any one these days
Even care if the next man is 'live or dead?
I didn't want to look
The daylight is too hard
I feel like somethings changed
But I can't understand
Wake up
Live someone else's dream
Smile smile
Cuz they're all watching
Shakeup shakedown
They can't hear you scream
Smile smile
Can't you hear me sing?
Wake up
Live someone else's dream
Smile smile
Cuz they're all watching
Shakeup shakedown
They can't hear you scream
Smile smile
Can't you hear me sing?
There is something strange
In my brain
Thats coming through (And I never)
I hear your name
And my brain
Tears me in two

The Kowloon Walled City in Hong Kong was once considered the densest settlement in the world. The sprawling neighbourhood was often characterised as a lawless enclave with poor living conditions, criminal activity and a thriving black market, trading anything from pirated goods to drugs and sex. It was demolished in 1994, but its legacy lives on through the memories of its former residents. Thirty years after it was torn down, former residents and others who worked there shared some of their most vivid recollections of what was known as the “City of Darkness”.

Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
The time may come where I won't be there
A voice that you remember, but not from where
Maybe then when you put down roots
Then all this aggravation won't feel so huge
[Chorus]
Come on and walk with me, we can make it
Talk with me and let me answer your heart
Life could be the greatest
You and me, can we open our hearts?
[Verse 2]
And all I ask of you when I saw you there
A simple conversation between two friends
Nothing that I said was true
A concrete fascination for me and you
[Chorus]
Come on and walk with me, we can make it
Talk with me and let me answer your heart
Life could be the greatest
You and me, can we open our hearts?
[Post Chorus]
I've got far to go
And the road is looking dark
And I've got only dreams
And a broken heart

Since its release, video game Stray has been a huge hit. Players follow a cute ginger cat escaping an underground city, inspired by Hong Kong’s Kowloon Walled City, a high-rise squatter camp that once housed 50,000 people demolished in 1994. Did the game look at all like the former glories of historic enclaves? Let’s find out.

He mentioned how it smelled very bad inside from the open drainage, the heat was stifling at plus 32ºC with little to no air circulation, also not knowing whether it was sewage or clean water dripping on their heads occasionally, they regularly had to wipe the camera and lens dry.
The claustrophobia- you could hardly turn around in some places with a 7kg Betacam SP camcorder on your shoulder. They had a tripod with them but hardly used it inside because there was nowhere to position it without blocking the narrow passageways.
They also frequently got lost and had to ask the locals for directions. Lunch was much-anticipated each day when they could take a break outside in the fresh air. After a day’s shoot they were absolutely dripping with sweat and the first thing they’d do after getting home was to put all their clothes straight in the wash and have a long shower. Working in those conditions was an immense challenge technically and physically but, as is often the case, none of that shows in the resulting footage.
Here we have a very interesting first hand account of what Hamdani Milas experienced in the walled city itself when he was filming this video. So by what he’s told me we can understand just how much of an incredible risk it was to film inside this city, even though it was near to when the city was demolished and the place was seen as safer it was still a high risk no go area.
I took it upon myself to re-sub the video as best as possible, the 4 part version is hard-subbed on a version of this film with very poor quality, the subs are also worded incorrectly in some places. So all I've done is re-subbed the whole thing and put it onto a better quality video clip. Since the subtitles are not hard subbed you can now use auto translate as well should be fairly accurate.
Note: about the section of this video where Jackie Pullinger is speaking, I’m sure anyone can see the subtitles are a transcript of Jackie Pullingers actual words in English and not the narrators. I’ve noticed a comment mentioning how the subs are way off in that part. While subbing this video I realised the narrator wasn’t giving an exact translation so took it upon myself to decipher what she was actually saying over his voice. Sorry I just couldn’t help it but it was out of boredom 😉

The story behind Hong Kong's colourful MTR stations

Hong Kong’s 99 metro stations are all identified by their own individual colour scheme. The idea was originally meant to help illiterate travellers find their stops, according to Andrew Mead, the chief architect of the city’s Mass Transit Railway system better known as the MTR. The colours of each station are derived from the surrounding environment, or take cues from the Chinese names of the stations. The stations’ vivid hues and the use of calligraphy and public art all help to give each station its own vibrant character, explains Post reporter Alkira Reinfrank.

Kowloon Station was opened in 1998 as part of the Airport Link. You can see Airport Express trains from Tung Chung Line platform, since the station is designed to have separate concourses for the 2 lines . Fun fact: the High Speed Rail West Kowloon station is located to the east of Kowloon Station.
九龍站在1998年與機場鐵路一同啟用,車站位於九龍西面的海旁。由於車站特殊的設計,機場快綫列車可於東涌綫月台看到。趣事一則:高鐵西九龍站位於九龍站的東邊。

Hong Kong was established as a colony of the British Empire after the Qing Empire ceded Hong Kong Island from Xin'an County at the end of the First Opium War in 1841 then again in 1842.[17] The colony expanded to the Kowloon Peninsula in 1860 after the Second Opium War and was further extended when Britain obtained a 99-year lease of the New Territories in 1898.[18][19] British Hong Kong was occupied by Imperial Japan from 1941 to 1945 during World War II; British administration resumed after the surrender of Japan.[20] The whole territory was transferred to China in 1997.[21] As one of China's two special administrative regions (the other being Macau), Hong Kong maintains separate governing and economic systems from that of mainland China under the principle of "one country, two systems".[22][f]
Originally a sparsely populated area of farming and fishing villages,[17] the territory has become one of the world's most significant financial centres and commercial ports.[23] It is the world's tenth-largest exporter and ninth-largest importer.[24][25] Hong Kong has a major capitalist service economy characterised by low taxation and free trade, and its currency, the Hong Kong dollar, is the eighth most traded currency in the world.[26] Hong Kong is home to the third-highest number of billionaires of any city in the world,[27] the second-highest number of billionaires of any city in Asia, and the largest concentration of ultra high-net-worth individuals of any city in the world.[28][29] Although the city has one of the highest per capita incomes in the world, severe income inequality exists among the population.[30]
Hong Kong is a highly developed territory and ranks fourth on the UN Human some

At long last, Winners & Losers has returned! Finally it's time for CITIES, after many years of comments suggesting it as a topic. This one was surprisingly difficult, given how loose the definition of a city can be, and the inconsistencies that this causes.

Originally a sparsely populated area of farming and fishing villages,[17][23] the territory has become one of the world's most significant financial centres and commercial ports.[24] It is the world's tenth-largest exporter and ninth-largest importer.[25][26] Hong Kong has a major capitalist service economy characterised by low taxation and free trade, and its currency, the Hong Kong dollar, is the eighth most traded currency in the world.[27] Hong Kong is home to the third-highest number of billionaires of any city in the world,[28] the second-highest number of billionaires of any city in Asia, and the largest concentration of ultra high-net-worth individuals of any city in the world.[29][30] Although the city

Lee Jun-fan (Chinese: 李振藩; November 27, 1940 – July 20, 1973), better known as Bruce Lee (Chinese: 李小龍), was a Hong Kong American martial artist, actor, director, martial arts instructor and philosopher. He was the founder of Jeet Kune Do, a hybrid martial arts philosophy drawing from different combat disciplines that is often credited with paving the way for modern mixed martial arts (MMA). Lee is considered by commentators, critics, media, and other martial artists to be the most influential martial artist of all time and a pop culture icon of the 20th century, who bridged the gap between East and West. He is credited with helping to change the way Asians were presented in American films.
The son of Cantonese opera star Lee Hoi-chuen, Lee was born in the Chinatown area of San Francisco, on November 27, 1940, to parents from Hong Kong, and was raised with his family in Kowloon, Hong Kong. He was introduced to the film industry by his father and appeared in several films as a child actor. His early martial arts experience included Wing Chun (trained under Yip Man), tai chi, boxing (winning the Hong Kong schools boxing tournament), and street fighting (frequently participating in Hong Kong rooftop fights). Lee moved to the United States at the age of 18 to receive his higher education at the University of Washington in Seattle; it was during this time that he began teaching martial arts, later drawing significant attention at the 1964 Long Beach International Karate Championships. In the 1970s, his Hong Kong and Hollywood-produced films elevated the traditional martial arts film to a new level of popularity and acclaim, sparking a surge of interest in the Chinese nation and Chinese martial arts in the West. The direction and tone of his films dramatically influenced and changed martial arts and martial arts films worldwide.
There are several sites dedicated to Lee around the world:
EA Sports UFC 4 is a mixed martial arts fighting video game developed by EA Vancouver and published by EA Sports. Serving as the sequel to EA Sports UFC 3 (2018), it was released on August 14, 2020 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Like its predecessor, UFC 4 is a fighting game based on the mixed martial arts promotion Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). There are 229 unique fighters, with 81 alternate versions. The game features a career mode, which was designed to be an "onboarding experience" to teach the player the basics of four MMA disciplines which include boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, and jiujitsu. The goal of the career mode, which allows players to create their own custom fighter, is to become the G.O.A.T. (which stands for "greatest of all time"). As players progress in the game, they can choose to accept or decline fights, which will affect the development of the fighter's career. The control scheme was also improved and streamlined to make the game more accessible.[1] Multiplayer modes, including Blitz Battles, and Online World Championships, would also be available. In addition to fighting in the The Octagon, players can also fight in Backyard and Kumite, which resembles an underground fighting arena. However, unlike its predecessor, Ultimate Team would not return in UFC 4.
