His family suffered during the English Civil War.
His father, also John Hamilton (first Lord Bargany), took the Parliamentarian side before the Civil War but joined with his cousin William Hamilton, 2nd Duke of Hamilton, on the Cavalier side in 1648.
Parliament seized his estates, fining him £2,000 for their return because of his royalist efforts. The eldest of seven children, John Hamilton assumed the title in 1662, after the death of his father. After the Restoration, the elder Bargany, and then the son, petitioned for the return of the fine, to no avail. Hamilton married Mary, the daughter of the Lord Chancellor of Scotland the year he took his title. His family itself split in loyalties, with the women generally favoring Presbyterianism and the men generally the Established church, and this made him a figure of suspicion throughout his life.
John HamiltonMC (1919–1993) was a British army officer and artist.
Early life and military career
John Hamilton was born in England in 1919 and was educated at Bradfield College. Throughout World War II, he served in the British Army in India as a member of the Queen’s Royal Regiment. As a junior officer at the age of 24, he received the Military Cross for gallantry during active operations against the enemy. Following his army service, he began a business career and settled in 1961 on the island of Tresco in the Isles of Scilly, Cornwall, where he sketched and painted for relaxation. In 1972, after a bout with angina, he sold his business and began painting on a full-time basis.
Hamilton was a lifelong bachelor and worked as a schoolteacher. He was a member of the Religious Society of Friends, known as the Quakers, also serving as a magistrate. First elected to the council in 1958, Hamilton became Leader of the Labour Group in 1974 replacing Bill Sefton. He led the council from 1976 to 1978, although with no majority he was often overturned by the Liberal and Conservative groups acting together. In 1978 Hamilton was briefly deposed as Labour group leader by Eddie Roderick when Labour lost power, but returned after a few weeks.
1980s leadership
He was a left-winger but was not a member of the Militant tendency who dominated the Liverpool Labour group at the time. However as Militant rose Hamilton was allowed to retain the leadership as a figurehead from the left-wing non-Militant members to disguise the fact that real power lay with leading Militants including Deputy Leader Derek Hatton. Hamilton knew this, and remarked "When I die I will go to hell with Hatton because he will make it look like heaven." Although a quietly spoken man, at all times Hamilton acted according to his principles: it was for this that he was most respected by all on the left of the Labour Party.
Lord Bargany was a title created in the Scotland on 14 November 1639 for Sir John Hamilton of Carriden, only son of Sir John Hamilton of Letterick, natural son of John, first marquis of Hamilton.
This peerage was created with limitation to the heirs male of the first lord’s body. The title became dormant or extinct after the death in 1736 of the 4th Lord Bargany, James Hamilton.

Big John Hamilton - Before The Next Teardrops Falls
A brilliant Southern soul singer, Florida's Big John Hamilton had a voice to match his name and practically defines the concept of obscurity. Hamilton cut eight solo 45s as well as a couple of duets with Doris Allen (including an interesting version of Buddy Miles' "Them Changes") for Florida's Minaret Records label between 1967 and 1970, few of which had any impact outside of the region. Sundazed Records finally collected all of these on a single CD in 2006 as How Much Can a Man Take. The powerful title tune, from 1968, occasionally shows up on soul collections and is a true gem.
