Hamilton was a lifelong bachelor and worked as a schoolteacher. He was a member of the Religious Society of Friends, known as the Quakers, also serving as a magistrate. First elected to the council in 1958, Hamilton became Leader of the Labour Group in 1974 replacing Bill Sefton. He led the council from 1976 to 1978, although with no majority he was often overturned by the Liberal and Conservative groups acting together. In 1978 Hamilton was briefly deposed as Labour group leader by Eddie Roderick when Labour lost power, but returned after a few weeks.
1980s leadership
He was a left-winger but was not a member of the Militant tendency who dominated the Liverpool Labour group at the time. However as Militant rose Hamilton was allowed to retain the leadership as a figurehead from the left-wing non-Militant members to disguise the fact that real power lay with leading Militants including Deputy Leader Derek Hatton. Hamilton knew this, and remarked "When I die I will go to hell with Hatton because he will make it look like heaven." Although a quietly spoken man, at all times Hamilton acted according to his principles: it was for this that he was most respected by all on the left of the Labour Party.
John Hamilton (1724 in Annapolis Royal – 1802 in Waterford, Ireland) was a British army officer of the 40th Regiment of Foot who fought in both King George's War and Father Le Loutre's War. He was eventually captured by a Mi'kmaq militia. He was an important prize for the Mi'kmaq because of his connections with the Nova Scotia establishment, his father and father-in-law being members of the Nova Scotia Council. He was also an artist and attempted to negogiate peace between the Mi'kmaq and British.
Military
He participated in the Siege of Annapolis Royal (1745) during King George's War. He applied for compensation when his property was destroyed in the defence of the town.
He was taken prisoner at the Siege of Grand Pre during Father Le Loutre's War in Nova Scotia (1750). The Mi'kmaq militia captured Lieutenant John Hamilton and eighteen soldiers under his command (including British officer John Handfield's son), while surveying the fort's environs. He was imprisoned in Quebec for two years before he was able to negotiate for the freedom of himself and 60 other prisoners. He was helped to gain his release by both his father Otho Hamilton and his father-in-law William Shirriff, both of whom were members of the Nova Scotia Council. Jean-Louis Le Loutre had paid Mi'kmaq ransom for Hamilton's release. He also was traded for the daughter of an Indian chief that John Gorham had imprisoned in Boston at his own residence with his daughter. Upon his return he married his second wife, daughter of his commander John Handfield.
Hamilton's older brother Lord James succeeded to the Earldom of Arran in 1575, but for reasons of his insanity, the care of the Hamilton estates was entrusted to Lord John. Hamilton was, like his family, a supporter of Mary, Queen of Scots, and for that in 1579 he and his family were forfeited, by the government of James Douglas, 4th Earl of Morton, regent for the underage James VI of Scotland. Hamilton fled to England, then France. He returned to England and there stayed with his brother Claude in the North. While in England he reconciled himself with Archibald Douglas, 8th Earl of Angus who was also in exile there following the Raid of Ruthven. King James had by now come under the influence of James Stewart of Bothwellmuir, to whom the King had granted Hamilton's brother's earldom of Arran. Hamilton with his brother, Angus and others including the Earl of Mar and the Master of Glamis, with the connivance of Elizabeth I of England raised an army and entered Scotland and reached Stirling in October 1585. King James capitulated on 4 November and received the banished lords into his presence.

Places - Lost in Time: Hamilton Palace
Hello, and welcome back to Places - Lost in Time, a series that looks back on the tale of places and locations that have existing within living memory or photographic record, but are now lost to the pages of history.
This week we move north of the border to Scotland, where, in one of the most tragic losses for British architectural history, we take a glimpse at Hamilton Palace, and by extension the incredibly convoluted history of the Hamilton family itself, as the fate of this influential peerage in UK politics was directly intertwined with the manner in which the opulent palace would evolve, going from its strength as the stately home of the established gentry, only for the move away from a feudal system to result in it falling into decline alongside the presence of the landowners.

George Hamilton-Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen
George Hamilton-Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen, (28 January 178414 December 1860), styled Lord Haddo from 1791 to 1801, was a British statesman, diplomat and landowner, successively a Tory, Conservative and Peelite politician, who served as Prime Minister from 1852 until 1855 in a coalition between the Whigs and Peelites, with Radical and Irish support. The Aberdeen ministry was filled with powerful and talented politicians, whom Aberdeen was largely unable to control and direct. Despite trying to avoid this happening, it took Britain into the Crimean War, and fell when its conduct became unpopular, after which Aberdeen retired from politics.
Aberdeen's career was dominated by foreign policy, but his experience did not prevent the slide towards the Crimean War. His personal life was marked by the loss of both parents by the time he was eleven, and of his first wife after only seven years of a happy marriage. His daughters died young, and his relations with his sons were difficult. Before his marriage he travelled extensively in Europe, including Greece, and he had a serious interest in the classical civilisations and their archaeology. On his return to Britain in 1805 he devoted much time and energy to improving conditions on his Scottish estates.
After the death of his wife in 1812 he became a diplomat, almost immediately being given the important embassy to Vienna while still in his twenties. His rise in politics was equally rapid and lucky, and "two accidents—C...
