Explore KU: Walk down the Hill and experience downtown Lawrence
Learn more about life as a Jayhawk: http://bit.ly/LifeAtKU ... Just a short walk down the Hill will lead you to a hub of creativity, culture, and community: downtown Lawrence. Whether browsing records or restaurants on “Mass Street” (that’s how students refer to downtown’s main thoroughfare), attending an art or music festival, or appreciating the historic storefronts, you’ll find that there truly is no place like Lawrence, Kansas.

Lawrence, KS
Travel just 40 miles west of Kansas City on I-70 and you'll find a town, Lawrence, ranked by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as one of the "Dozen Most Distinctive Destinations" in 2000, touting it as "one of the most well-preserved and unique communities in the United States." Nestled amidst the rolling hills of Northeast Kansas, this college town of more than 80,000 is home to the University of Kansas and Haskell Indian Nations University.
Founded in 1854 by the New England Emigrant Aid Society in an effort to keep the territory free from slavery, Lawrence is said to be one of the only U.S. cities founded strictly for political reasons. During the Civil War, Lawrence was home to many Abolitionists and Free Staters. It was a town representative of anti-slavery sentiments, m...

Downtown Lawrence Kansas: Bleeding Kansas Capital
We are in downtown Lawrence Kansas. Lawrence's downtown is full of restaurants, brewery's, shops, architecture and history. And we are going to mill around for a bit see what interesting sites we can see grab some lunch and just enjoy the day.
Lawrence was founded in 18 54 by group from the New England aid society, a group of abolitionists that came into the Kansas territory to ensure that the State would be admitted to the union as a Free State. A lot happened in this town both before and during the Civil War. Most notably was Quantrill’s raid in 1863 that resulted in the destruction of Lawrence and the deaths of 150 citizens.
This town has been burned twice. But Lawrence rose from the ashes and has become an incredibly quaint college town.
I love history and I get out and go find ...

The TV Movie That Destroyed Lawrence, Kansas and May Have Saved The World
On Nov. 20, 1983, ABC-TV aired “The Day After,” a film that depicted the devastating effects of a nuclear exchange near Kansas City.
A documentary by Jeff Daniels called “Television Event” chronicles the many challenges that director Nicholas Meyer and his crew faced while filming the “unthinkable” in and around Lawrence, Kansas, and the Cold War-era skirmishes required to keep it on a network TV schedule.
On Monday, Dec. 4, just over 40 years after the film drew an astonishing 100 million viewers, Daniels, a documentary filmmaker, not the famous actor with the same name, will screen his documentary at Liberty Hall in Lawrence.
A visit to the University of Kansas’ Spencer Research Library uncovers a number of artifacts and memorabilia from the 1982 production, like an elaborate poste...

The university's athletic teams, known as the Jayhawks, compete within the Big 12 Conference. The university offers a wide range of sports and club-level activities, including ice hockey, rugby, and men's volleyball, however their most successful team has been the Men's basketball team, winning four NCAA championships. Kansas Football dates back to 1890, which makes it one of the oldest continuous programs in the nation.
The university has produced a significant number of distinguished alumni and faculty, including Fulbright Scholars, Rhodes Scholars, Marshall Scholars, MacArthur Fellows, Pulitzer Prize winners, NASA astronauts, Nobel laureates, and others. Politician Bob Dole attended the university, but did not graduate.
The University of Kansas has had more teams compete in the National Debate Tournament than any other university. Kansas has won the tournament 6 times (1954, 1970, 1976, 1983, 2009 and 2018) and had 15 teams make it to the final four. Kansas trails only Northwestern and Harvard for most tournaments won.

It was a town representative of anti-slavery sentiments, making it the target of several attacks by pro-slavery bushwhackers. On August 21, 1863, the infamous Quantrill's Raid resulted in the deaths of more than 150 unarmed Lawrence men and boys and nearly destroyed the young city in what has become by historians as one of the worst atrocities of the Civil War. As a result, Lawrence has evolved into a melting pot of ideas and styles, artists and scholars, past and present.
Meander along Massachusetts Street and you'll soon see why "Mass. Street" has been called one of America's most authentic main streets. The five-block downtown district is lined with century-old buildings, eclectic boutiques, tempting sidewalk cafes, curious antique shops and a multitude of art galleries and studios. Live music plays along the street every night of the week, from folk to jazz, rock to blues and everything in between.
On KU's scenic 950-acre campus, you will find a treasure trove of things to do and see. At the KU Natural History Museum, you will see nationally recognized exhibits, including Comanche, the only U.S. Army survivor of the Battle of Little Big Horn. Benton, Chihuly, Curry, Monet, Rossetti and Wood are a few of the artists featured at the Spencer Museum of Art. With a 23-foot stained glass American flag as a backdrop, follow the path of Bob Dole from a modest home in Russell to his role as U.S. Senate Majority Leader and presidential candidate at the Dole Institute of Politics. Then spend your evening watching award-winning artists from all corners of the globe perform on stage at the Lied Center of Kansas.
Take a visual tour of Lawrence's hot spots, read more about its fiery history, peruse the extensive events calendar and soak in a little of its ambiance at www.visitlawrence.com. While you're there, don't forget to book your hotel reservations online so you can experience "The Art of a City."
Authentic, Enchanting, Alluring, Appealing.

I love history and I get out and go find it every week! I have found some amazing history just by getting out and exploring!
I try to pronounce everything properly. I really do try, so please forgive me if I don't pronounce something properly. :) Be Nice!

A visit to the University of Kansas’ Spencer Research Library uncovers a number of artifacts and memorabilia from the 1982 production, like an elaborate poster, reels of film and still photos. Including scenes from inside Allen Fieldhouse and a “tent city” built along the Kansas River, a movie creation that Wright still marvels at.
