A refugee camp is a temporary settlement built to receive refugees. Camps with over a hundred thousand people are common, but as of 2012 the average-sized camp housed around 11,400. Usually they are built and run by a government, the United Nations, or international organizations, (such as the Red Cross) or NGOs. But there are also unofficial refugee camps, like the Calais jungle, where refugees are largely left without support of governments or international organisations.
The Arabic name, which translates as "the long (place) of the vineyard" is derived from the Aramaic words Toor Karma, meaning "mount of vineyards."
History
During the Ayyubid era, after the Muslim reconquest of Palestine under Sultan Saladin in 1187, the first families to settle in Tulkarm were from the Kurdish clan of Zaydan. A military group, the Zaydan were dispatched to the Wadi al-Sha'ir area, which includes Tulkarm, by Saladin to buttress the defense of the western approaches of Muslim-held Palestine from the Crusaders who dominated the coastal area. The Zaydan would come to politically dominate Tulkarm and the vicinity until the early 17th century. Around 1230, during the late Ayyubid period, the Arab Fuqaha clan immigrated to Tulkarm. They had originally migrated to Palestine from Arabia many generations prior and had become semi-nomadic farmers and grazers. They were considered ashraf (related to the Islamic prophet Muhammad) and served as the 'ulama ("religious scholars") of the village.

Syria: Inside Al Hol refugee camp where Shamima Begum was held
They hold the highest number of ISIS supporters in the world along with the families who fled Iraq and Syria after the fall of their so-called caliphate.
Experts warn the camps - which house tens of thousands of refugees - are now a "ticking time bomb", a fertile breeding ground for Islamic extremism and an ideal hunting ground for ISIS recruiters.
Sky's special correspondent, Alex Crawford, was taken inside the tented communities to speak to some who are held there.

View full lesson: http://ed.ted.com/lessons/what-does-it-mean-to-be-a-refugee-benedetta-berti-and-evelien-borgman
About 60 million people around the globe have been forced to leave their homes to escape war, violence and persecution. The majority have become Internally Displaced Persons, meaning they fled their homes but are still in their own countries. Others, referred to as refugees, sought shelter outside their own country. But what does that term really mean? Benedetta Berti and Evelien Borgman explain.

"Get off the gate! Get back, all of you!", a guard at the entrance to the Dadaab camp shouts at the crowd. These people are exhausted from famine and their arduous journey, especially the children. "The child's weight is five kilos. He should be around 10 kilos", a camp doctor tells us. Unfortunately there is no space in the camps and these people must settle on its outskirts in makeshift shelters for months on end. So why isn't more space being opened up? Aid agencies have pumped millions of dollars into providing new facilities, but they remain unopened. Fafa Olivier Attidzah, who runs the camp on behalf of the UN, claims: "We have decided to revisit the plot size so that we can accommodate more people. That is why we haven't started putting people there". But many claim the real reason is the Kenyan government's fear of having 1 million Somali refugees inside its borders. Kenya is also suffering from a drought and as the Somali situation worsens there are fears that conflict could be on the horizon.

The soldiers identified a terrorist cell attempting to attack the forces and eliminated them in close-quarters combat. In the operations in the Issa area, many Hamas terrorists were eliminated, along with many buildings used for terrorist activities and weapons that were destroyed.
Soldiers of the Paratroopers Brigade who were operating in the area located and discovered a number of shafts leading to a significant undergound tunnel route.
Soldiers of the Yahalom Unit and the Oketz K-9 Unit examined the significant and strategic underground tunnel route beneath the "Issa" post - used as an underground base by the Hamas terrorist organization. This multi-level structure served as an underground post. Its floors were used for storage, hideouts, command and control, and movement of operatives between different areas. After investigating with various technological means and in collaboration with the combat engineering forces of the 99th Division, the soldiers destroyed the underground tunnel route.
The IDF released footage from the Marom Brigade's Oketz K-9 Unit's dog cameras, revealing a tunnel network hundreds of meters long, including command and communication rooms, hideouts with dozens of meters of space, concrete bunkers, and water and electricity installations. So far in the war, the unit's soldiers and dogs have scanned dozens of tunnels, locating findings that allow the forces to enter the tunnels.

Israeli soldiers fatally shoot Muhammad Habali in the head, from behind, Tulkarm, 4 Dec. 2018
Lethal gunfire in Tulkarm: Israeli soldiers fatally shoot Muhammad Habali in the head, from behind, from about 80 meters away.
On the night of 4 Dec. 2018, some 100 Israeli soldiers invaded Tulkarm. At 2:25 A.M., three soldiers headed towards some young Palestinians who were standing by a restaurant. At 80 meters away they stopped and opened fire, fatally hitting Muhammad Habali (22) in the head – from behind – and injuring another man. Testimonies and CCTV footage show that, contrary to the military's claim, no “violent disturbance” was underway and the area was quiet. While the military announced it would investigate, this usually serves appearances and to silence criticism, so use of lethal force can continue unchecked.

STORYLINE
Israelis and Palestinians on Monday reached a deal about handing over security control of the West Bank town of Tulkarem, a boost for a fledgling peace process that has repeatedly bogged down over security issues.
After the agreement was announced, Palestinians celebrated in Tulkarem, with gunmen firing weapons in the air as Palestinian police watched without taking action.
The handover could help Palestinian officials carry out a new directive restricting weapons in the hands of militants, who insist they'll comply only if Israel withdraws from West Bank towns.
Israeli and Palestinian security officers reached the compromise over the handover in two meetings on Monday.
Senior Israeli commander Colonel Tamir Hayman said that Palestinian police would be in control of the area as of Monday evening and the main roadblock in front of Tulkarem would be dismantled on Tuesday morning, completing the process.
The main sticking point of Monday's talks were two villages north of Tulkarem, where Israel says the Islamic Jihad cell responsible for a February 25 suicide bombing that killed five Israelis in Tel Aviv operates.
Israeli officials said Israel would remain in control of the two villages for now, with the intent of handing them over later.
Tulkarem is the second of five towns to be handed back to Palestinian security as part of an agreement to end four years of bloodshed announced at a summit meeting in Egypt on February 8 by Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.
In the six weeks since the summit, violence has dropped considerably.
But not all confidence-building measures, transfer of the towns and release of additional Palestinian prisoners have been implemented, renewing suspicions.

Tens of thousands of people have ended up in Kenya, where a vast refugee camp set up in the 1990s is continuing to grow.
With legal resettlement options drying up, those stuck there, in some cases for decades, are facing an even bleaker future.

Children as young as ten attempting suicide and almost constant horrific violence. This is life inside a European refugee camp. The BBC has been given rare access inside Moria camp on the Greek island of Lesbos. Workers for the charity MSF say it is the worst refugee camp on earth. It has a capacity for around two thousand refugees yet houses around eight thousand. On just one day the BBC visited two people were stabbed. Catrin Nye went inside.

Lesson by Benedetta Berti and Evelien Borgman, animation by TED-Ed.
Over the past few weeks, IDF troops conducted operational activity in the Issa area in the southern part of Gaza City; a tunnel network serving as an underground post and numerous buildings used as Hamas headquarters were destroyed
As part of operations in the south of Gaza City, soldiers of the Yiftah Battalion (11th) and combat engineering forces struck Hamas headquarters in the Issa area.

Camera 2: Young men standing on a-Nuzha St., near a-Sabah Restaurant. Habali is shot and falls down.
Camera 04: Soldiers by the al-Fadiliyah School, a-Nuzha St.

The Palestinian Authority's cabinet met in Jericho on Friday night (2/8) and condemned Palestinian violence in the West Bank. Earlier on Friday, hundreds of protesters stormed the prison in the town of Tulkarm and freed scores of prisoners. Rioting had broken out in Tulkarm after a militant member of Hamas Ibrahim al-Hadayida was shot dead. Palestinian Authority ministers travelled to Tulkarm on Saturday
to investigate the fatal shooting. The town was virtually paralysed by a strike on Saturday as shopkeepers honoured the memory of Ibrahim al-Hadayida. In Jericho on Saturday a Palestinian military tribunal jailed three Palestinian policemen for torturing to death an inmate of
Nablus' jail, 26-year-old Mahmoud Jemayel.
