The AVENGING Execution Of Ion Antonescu - Romania's WW2 Prime Minister
During the Second World War, there were many countries who collaborated and supported Hitler's regime and Third Reich. Many of these countries gave him support militarily, and backed up his Wehrmacht Army with soldiers of their own. One country that collaborated was Romania, with the Romanian Prime Minister Ion Antonescu building a close friendship and bond with the German Dictator. Antonescu supported Hitler's ideology and belief, and rather than ally himself with the Soviets, he chose to support Hitler's regime. Antonescu even threw hundreds of thousand of his army to support the German war effort.
He also imposed the anti-semitic laws and rules that Hitler oversaw, and Antonescu's Romanian Army committing many atrocities alongside the German Army. Antonescu was known for ordering many...

The Unspeakable Things That Happened During The Romanian Holocaust In WW2
One of the seemingly endless tragedies of the Holocaust was that the rise of the Nazis encouraged anti-Semitic movements and violent actions by other nations. One government allied to Hitler during WWII was Romania. Romania had allied itself with Hitler as protection against the Soviet Union, with which it shares a long border. For that protection, Hitler received the bulk of the sizable Romanian oil production and a government friendly to his anti-Semitic policies.
Before we begin, we ask that you take a look at our recent video “The History of anti-Semitism”, which will provide a bit more background and understanding of the horrible phenomenon of the prejudice that led to the Holocaust. 23rd August 1944: King Michael of Romania leads a coup d'etat against against Ion Antonescu
Michael was proclaimed king of Romania after his father, Carol II, was forced to abdicate by the newly-appointed Prime Minister General Ion Antonescu on 6 September 1940. In practical terms the 18-year old king was nothing more than a figurehead in Antonescu’s military dictatorship that went on to join the Axis powers on 23 November 1940.
On 22 June 1941 the Romanian army supported the German attack on the Soviet Union. By the summer of 1944 more than 1 million Romanian troops had fought on the Eastern Front, although the war itself was going badly for the Axis powers. King Michael had already begun talks with conspirators seeking to topple Antonescu and bring an end to the war when, on 20 August, Soviet troops launched their offensive on eastern Romania.
Three days later, on 23 August,...

"I Do Not Care If We Go Down in History as Barbarians" Trailer
"I do not care if we go down in history as barbarians." These words, spoken by Romania’s military dictator Ion Antonescu in the summer of 1941 started the ethnic cleansing on the Eastern Front. Mariana, an outspoken young theatre director, has been commissioned to make a public spectacle based on Romanian history. But her plan to reconstruct the anti-Semitic 1941 Odessa Massacre isn't at all what the authorities had in mind.

Romania were eventually taken over by the Soviet Red Army as they pushed the German Army back as the tide of the war turned. Antonescu was then captured and was imprisoned by the Soviets, before he was placed on trial accused of war crimes.
He was sent back to Romania and was placed on trial, and he was found guilty of crimes against humanity and war crimes. He was then sentenced to death and was executed using a firing squad. The Prime Minister of Romania was then executed along with a number of other condemned men.

We also would like you to know that we at “A Day in History” understand that modern Romania in no way resembles the fascist Romanian state of WWII, despite unhinged outbursts from the small number of Romanian ultra-nationalists who deny the Holocaust or Romania's part in it.

Romania before WWII
In 1877-78, Romania won its independence from the Ottoman Empire, which had controlled it since the mid-1500s. In 1908, the neighboring Bulgarians also achieved independence from the Ottomans.
In 1918, with the end of WWI, other countries became independent in central and southeast Europe: Austria, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Poland, and Czechoslovakia.
One of the good things about both the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian Empires was that both had kept a lid on the ethnic and religious hatreds that had existed in the area for hundreds of years. While there were numerous incidents of ethnic violence while these nations were ruled by other more powerful states, they did not come close to the level of violence which occurred with independence and the coming of Nazism and WWII.
At the time of the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union, Romania was ruled by Marshal Ion Antonescu, a WWI Romanian hero. By the time WWII began Antonescu had been a well-known extreme right-wing politician and army officer for thirty-years, having taken part in a brutal suppression of a peasants' revolt in 1907.
Antonescu's anti-Semitism was a product both of time, place, position, combined with personal history. As a child, Antonescu's father had taken the rare step, for that time and place, of divorcing the future leaders' mother for a Jewish woman he had been having an affair with. Despite the fact that Antonescu's dad forced the woman to convert to Orthodox Christianity, to Antonescu she was always “an evil Jewish woman” who had broken up his happy childhood home.

Three days later, on 23 August, the King summoned Antonescu to his palace where he was dismissed from the post of Prime Minister and arrested. That evening the king went on the radio to issue a cease-fire and declare Romania’s loyalty to the Allies. Although German forces responded with force, they were soon overwhelmed by the armies of Romania and the advancing USSR.
By 31 August the Red Army had reached Bucharest and, less than two weeks later, an armistice was signed on terms virtually dictated by the USSR. Nevertheless, King Michael was presented with the Order of Victory by Stalin and made Chief Commander of the American Legion of Merit by President Harry S. Truman. Antonescu was later found guilty of war crimes, crimes against the peace, and treason. He was executed on 1 June 1946.
