Operation Barbarossa: Hitler's failed invasion of the USSR
Operation Barbarossa was the code name for Adolf Hitler's invasion of the Soviet Union. Beginning in June 1941, this blitzkrieg attack the USSR and its leader Joseph Stalin would ultimately decide the Second World War.
Despite early success against an unprepared Soviet army, the invasion began to slow down and eventually ground to a halt in December just 20km short of Moscow. At that moment the Russians struck back with a surprise winter counter-attack, bringing the offensive to an end.
In this episode of IWM Stories, John Delaney takes a look at why Operation Barbarossa failed with the help of archive film, photographs and battle maps.

- On the 30th September, 1941, the Germans unleashed the Operation Typhoon, the drive to Moscow. However, almost from the beginning of Operation Typhoon, the weather worsened, forcing the German Army High Command to order a halt to the Operation Typhoon. The pause gave the Soviets time to consolidate their positions and organize formations of newly activated reservists.
On December 5, the Soviet Union conducted a total counterattack on the whole battlefront. In early January 1942, The military campaign to defend Moscow came to an end, bringing vitality back to the city.
What do you think is the reason why Germany lost the war that they started? And what makes a decisive contribution to the Soviet victory?
