HMS Raleigh is the modern-day basic training facility of the Royal Navy at Torpoint, Cornwall, United Kingdom. It is spread over several square miles, and has damage control simulators and fire-fighting training facilities, as well as a permanently moored training ship, the former HMS Brecon. Its principal function is the delivery of both New Entry Training & Basic Training.
In 2007, phase one training for all new Royal Navy recruits was increased to nine weeks and subsequently ten (from eight) of their career at the base, which also provides courses in military training, seamanship, logistics and submarine operations. It also delivers training for crews preparing for operational deployments. HMS Raleigh is also the home of Defence Maritime Logistics School (DMLS) providing training for the Royal Navy's Logistics Officers, chefs, stewards, pay clerks (referred to as writers), and supply chain ratings, the Seaman Specialist School, the Submarine School and HM Royal Marines BandPlymouth.
Six ships and one shore establishment of the Royal Navy have borne the name HMS Raleigh, after Sir Walter Raleigh:
HMS Raleigh was a 32-gun fifth rate, previously the American USSRaleigh(1776). She was captured in 1778 by HMSUnicorn and HMSExperiment and was commissioned into the Royal Navy as HMS Raleigh. She was sold in 1783.
HMSRaleigh(1806) was an 18-gun Cruizer classbrig-sloop launched in 1806. She was used as a target from 1839 and was sold in 1841.
HMSRaleigh(1845) was a 50-gun fourth rate launched in 1845 and wrecked in 1857.
HMS Raleigh was to have been a wood screw frigate. She was ordered in 1860, but was cancelled in 1863.
HMSRaleigh(1873) was an iron screw frigate launched in 1874 and sold in 1905.
Raleigh, a 32-gun frigate, was authorized by Continental Congress on 13 December 1775. Built by Messrs. James Hackett, Hill, and Paul under supervision of Thomas Thompson, the keel was laid on March 21, 1776 at the shipyard of John Langdon on what is now Badger's Island in Kittery, Maine. She was launched on May 21, 1776.
With a full-length figure of Sir Walter Raleigh as figurehead, Raleigh put to sea under Captain Thomas Thompson, who also supervised her construction, on August 12, 1777. Shortly thereafter, she joined Alfred and sailed for France. Three days out they captured a schooner carrying counterfeitMassachusetts money. Burning the schooner and her cargo, except for samples, the frigates continued their transatlantic passage. On September 2 they captured the Britishbrig, Nancy, and from her they obtained the signals of the convoy which the brig had been escorting from the rear. Giving chase, the Americans closed with the convoy on September 4, 1777.
HMS Raleigh was a Hawkins-classheavy cruiser of the Royal Navy. She was commissioned as part of the British North Atlantic squadron in 1921. Within in a year of commissioning the ship was written off after having run aground off Labrador. The vessel was eventually destroyed with explosives in 1926.
Design
She had a full load displacement of 12,000 long tons (12,000t) (light, 9,700 long tons (9,900t)), an overall length of 605ft (184m), and carried a complement of 700 officers and men. She was the only ship of the Hawkins class to be completed with 70,000shp (52,000kW) machinery; on trials off Isle of Arran from 7–9 September 1920, she reached her designed speed of 31kn (36mph; 57km/h) at full power of 71,350shp (53,210kW). At half power, 35,000shp (26,000kW), she still managed to make 28kn (32mph; 52km/h). After trials the ship proceeded to Devonport for completion as a flagship.
