A figurehead is a carved wooden decoration found at the prow of ships largely made between the 16th and 20th centuries.
History
Although earlier ships had often had some form of bow ornamentation (e.g. the Viking ships of ca. A.D. 800–1100), the general practice was introduced with the galleons of the 16th century, as the figurehead as such could not come to be until ships had an actual stemhead structure on which to place it. The menacing appearance of toothy and bug-eyed figureheads on Viking ships also had the protective function of warding off evil spirits. The Egyptians placed figures of holy birds on the prow while the Phoenicians used horses representing speed. The Ancient Greeks used boars' heads to symbolise acute vision and ferocity while Roman boats often mounted a carving of a centurion representing valour in battle. In northern Europe, serpents, bulls, dolphins and dragons were customary and by the 13th Century, the swan was used representing grace and mobility.
While the authority of a figurehead is in practice generally symbolic or ceremonial, public opinion and respect for the office or the office holder and access to high levels of government can give them significant influence on events. Sometimes a figurehead with reserve powers can be exploited in times of emergency. For example, Indian Prime MinisterIndira Gandhi used the figurehead President of India to issue unilateral decrees that allowed her to bypass parliament when it no longer supported her.

The Art Of Ship's Figurehead Carving
Andy Peters is probably the only full time ship's figurehead carver working in Britain.
His expert hands are now working on a new figurehead for the historic sailing ship Cutty Sark.
The figurehead you can currently see on the ship is actually a replica, made in 1957. Now it is showing signs of rot, so a new figurehead is being made that more closely matches the original designs.
Visit Andy Peters' workshop, and watch a unique craftsman at work.

Why Cutty Sark's Figurehead Needed To Be Replaced
Cutty Sark’s original figurehead, created by the legendary ship’s carver Frederick Hellyer, was damaged in a storm in the late 19th century.
The figurehead that visitors have become used to is actually a replica, made in 1957.
In 2019 the shipkeeping team discovered signs of rot. Some conservation work was carried out, but the decision was eventually taken to replace it with a new carving.
The new figurehead is based on drawings by Hercules Linton, the original designer of Cutty Sark. The figurehead aims to reflect the beauty of the original ship designs and celebrate the art of ship’s carving.

The Conservation and Display of The Box Naval Figureheads Collection was an ambitious and transformational project to conserve and restore fourteen degraded, nineteenth century, naval ships’ figurehead carvings and place them on prominent public display as a permanent exhibition suspended within the main entrance of The Box (a museum, gallery, archive and visitor attraction in central Plymouth). The carvings underwent restoration work in the 1950s using untried methods which failed, so...
