John Adams (October 30 [O.S. October 19] 1735 – July 4, 1826) was an American lawyer, author, statesman, and diplomat. He served as the second President of the United States (1797–1801), the first Vice President (1789–97), and as a Founding Father was a leader of American independence from Great Britain. Adams was a political theorist in the Age of Enlightenment who promoted republicanism and a strong central government. His innovative ideas were frequently published. He was also a dedicated diarist and correspondent, particularly with his wife and key advisor Abigail.
He collaborated with his cousin, revolutionary leader Samuel Adams, but he established his own prominence prior to the American Revolution. After the Boston Massacre, despite severe local anti-British sentiment, he provided a successful though unpopular legal defense of the accused British soldiers, driven by his devotion to the right to counsel and the "protect[ion] of innocence". As a delegate from Massachusetts to the Continental Congress, Adams played a leading role in persuading Congress to declare independence. He assisted Thomas Jefferson in drafting the Declaration of Independence in 1776, and was its foremost advocate in the Congress. As a diplomat in Europe, he helped negotiate the eventual peace treaty with Great Britain, and acquired vital governmental loans from Amsterdam bankers. Adams was the primary author of the Massachusetts Constitution in 1780 which influenced American political theory, as did his earlier Thoughts on Government.
John Adams is a 2008 American television miniseries chronicling most of U.S. President John Adams' political life and his role in the founding of the United States. Paul Giamatti portrays John Adams. The miniseries was directed by Tom Hooper. Kirk Ellis wrote the screenplay based on the book John Adams by David McCullough. The biopic of John Adams and the story of the first fifty years of the United States was broadcast in seven parts by HBO between March 16 and April 20, 2008. John Adams received widespread critical acclaim, and many prestigious awards. The show won four Golden Globe awards and thirteen Emmy awards, more than any other miniseries in history.
Emeritus Professor John Adams (born 1938) of University College London, is a professor of geography and leading theorist on risk compensation. His book Risk is an analysis of how humans assess and respond to perceived risks.
Adams spoke at the Shared Space conference held in Ipswich in June, 2005, where in his talk titled "Risk Compensation versus the obedient automaton theory of human behaviour" he discussed how understanding risk compensation was essential to the understanding of why shared space principles work for the design of public spaces such as road layouts in towns.
He has also coined the term and written extensively on the phenomenon of hypermobility.
Adams has been critical of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and has praised "reputable scientists who react sceptically to the “hockey stick” peddled by Sir John Houghton and the IPCC."
Adams was a member of the advisory committee to the Anti-Concorde Project.
The Blessed John Adams was an English Catholic priest and martyr.
He was born at Winterborne St Martin in Dorset at an unknown date (ca. 1543?) and became a Protestant minister. He later entered the Catholic Church and travelled to the English College then at Rheims, arriving on 7 December 1579. He was ordained a priest at Soissons on 17 December 1580. He set out for the mission in England on 29 March 1581.
He is known to have worked in Hampshire but details of his later, as of his earlier life, are patchy. It may be that he was taken prisoner at Rye only a short time after landing in England and that he escaped. In 1583 he was described as a man of "about forty years of age, of average height, with a dark beard, a sprightly look and black eyes. He was a very good controversialist, straightforward, very pious, and pre-eminently a man of hard work. He laboured very strenuously at Winchester and in Hampshire, where he helped many, especially of the poorer classes."
John William "Tree" Adams (September 22, 1921 – August 20, 1969) was an American football offensive lineman in the National Football League (NFL) for the Washington Redskins from 1945 to 1949. He played college football at the University of Notre Dame.
Adams was born in Charleston, Arkansas as one of ten children. He was considered normal size until he was 10, but then experienced a growth spurt during which he "shot up like a tree". He attended Subiaco Academy in Subiaco, Arkansas, where he played high school football and basketball.
Adams played college football at the University of Notre Dame from 1942-1944. In 1943, he was the backup for Ziggy Czarobski on the 1943 championship team and then became the starting tackle in 1944.
Adams was selected in the third round of the 1945 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins.
John Adams is a 2001 biography of the Founding Father and second U.S. President, John Adams, written by the popular American historian David McCullough, which won the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography. It has been made into a TV miniseries with the same name by HBO Films. Since the TV miniseries debuted, an alternative cover has been added to the book showing Paul Giamatti as John Adams. The book is available as both hardcover and paperback.
"The problem with Adams is that most Americans know nothing about him." - David McCullough
Although the book was originally intended to be a dual biography of Adams and Jefferson, McCullough was increasingly drawn to Adams and away from Jefferson. The author spent six years studying Adams, reading the same books he had read and visiting the places he had lived.
Perhaps the greatest treasure trove was the enormous amount of correspondence between John Adams and his wife, Abigail Adams, a marriage McCullough calls "one of the great love stories of American history." Also invaluable was his long correspondence with his successor as President, Thomas Jefferson, which McCullough calls "one of the most extraordinary correspondences in the English language."

Join J.B. Andersen as he examines the presidency of John Adams, our second President and the first New Englander to hold the job. Prickly by nature, Adams was also resolute and independent-minded. A lifelong enemy of slavery, he had the good sense to marry the redoubtable Abigail Adams. Together, the couple established an American dynasty. Supported by Ramsey County Library Friends.
The Alien and Sedition Acts signed by John Adams would forever tarnish his presidency, however, historian and author Gordon S. Wood said Adams wouldn’t be the last president to sign such a draconian measure.
