The Town of Rye
The town of Rye in East Sussex is about as far east as you can go and still be in Sussex. It has a castle, some Napoleonic era fortifications, really ancient shops and inns, and plenty of cobbled streets. Oh, and it also has smugglers’ inns, the Mermaid, and the Olde Bell – which are rumored to have a secret tunnel connecting them! Sorry, I was unable to verify this.
I had been hoping to get back to Rye with my drone to get aerial footage for my "B" roll, but circumstances have prevented this. Some of the aerial video footage seen in this video is borrowed from MrSwain9415’s YouTube channel, for which he has my thanks! Links to the full videos:

Jonathan's recent visit to the George in Rye in East Sussex took him on a gourmet tour of the area. In the latest episode of Jonathan's Journal, Jonathan visits Gusbourne Estate, Camber Sands and Rye Fisheries as well as exploring the town of Rye itself. The team were also lucky enough to try excellent dishes created from locally sourced produce and wines from the extensive wine list at The George Grill Restaurant.
The George in Rye is a 16th century Coaching Inn that reopened in May 2022 following a complete refurbishment. Rye itself is a medieval town, steeped in history and offers the perfect location for a short break. Located just under an hour and a half from London, Rye is full of shopping, great restaurants and even evening entertainment in the likes of The Grapevine wine bar and live music venue. Gusbourne Estate is producing award winning sparkling wines and giving the Champagne houses a run for their money. This area of Kent and East Sussex is considered to have the perfect climate conditions for production of fine sparkling wines and the conditions of Gusbourne with the warm winds blowing in from Camber Sands make it ideal.

Rye in East Sussex is a beautiful medieval town on the south coast of England but is it the MOST Beautiful town in the UK? We went to find out!
Join us as we indulge in coffee & cake by the quayside before heading off through the medieval maze of cobbled streets to the iconic Mermaid Street, often named the most beautiful street in England before we take on the challenge of climbing the tower at St Mary's Church for some incredible views across the town and beyond.
Then, why settle for one tower when you can climb two? So we head in to explore the Ypres Tower which is all that remains of Rye Castle before heading back down Mermaid Street to The Old Grain Store for some lunch.
Not done with this beautiful part of Sussex yet, we make the short drive to Rye Harbour Village for a walk through the nature reserve and a spot of birdwatching from the cafe.

Who & what is JJ Extra?
We’re Josh & Jason, a British couple with a passion for everything travel & food (and lots of coffee). Whether at home in the UK or on our international travels we seek out everything from hidden gems to bucket list destinations, trying new foods and unique drinks wherever we go.
After meeting in early 2019 with dreams of travelling the World together we were all plunged in to the chaos of a global pandemic. Now, as we move in to the future we are making up for lost time and ensuring every day turns in to an adventure, fuelled by our love of food and an unhealthy (but enjoyable) addiction to coffee.
Over the last 2 years we have explored our beautiful home country like never before and in 2022 we were lucky enough to start travelling abroad once more and our dream to travel the world together has been reignited.
We love an adventure and in 2023 we are challenging ourselves to step out of our comfort zones & push ourselves to the limit as we take on bigger adventures than ever before, visit new places & try new experiences. So come along and join the adventure, you never know where it might lead!

Rye is a small town in the non-metropolitan county of East Sussex, within the historic County of Sussex, England, which stands approximately two miles from the open sea and is at the confluence of three rivers: the Rother, the Tillingham and the Brede. In medieval times, however, as an important member of the Cinque Ports confederation, it was at the head of an embayment of the English Channel and almost entirely surrounded by the sea.
Rye is officially a civil parish but with its historic roots has the status of a town; at the 2011 census it had a population of 4773. During its history its association with the sea has included providing ships for the service of the King in time of war, and being involved with smuggling gangs of the 18th and 19th centuries such as the notorious Hawkhurst Gang who used its inns such as The Mermaid Inn and The Olde Bell Inn, connected by secret passageway.
Those historic roots and its charm make it a tourist destination, and much of its economy is based on that: there are a number of hotels, guest houses, B&Bs, tea rooms and restaurants, as well as other attractions, catering for the visitor. There is a small fishing fleet, and Rye Harbour has facilities for yachts and other vessels.
