The First Fleet is the name given to the 11 ships that left Great Britain on 13 May 1787 to found the penal colony that became the first European settlement in Australia. The fleet consisted of two Royal Navy vessels, three store ships and six convict transports, carrying more than 1,000 convicts, marines and seamen, and a vast quantity of stores. From England, the Fleet sailed southwest to Rio de Janeiro, then east to Cape Town and via the Great Southern Ocean to Botany Bay, arriving in mid-January 1788, taking 250 to 252 days from departure to final arrival.
History
Background and planning
Convicts were originally transported to the Thirteen Colonies in North America, but after the American Revolutionary War ended in 1783, the newly formed United States refused to accept further convicts. On 6 December 1785, Orders in Council were issued in London for the establishment of a penal colony in New South Wales, on land claimed for Britain by explorer James Cook in his first voyage to the Pacific in 1770.
The First Fleet was a unit of the United States Navy, in operation from as early as 1946 (but definitely active by 1948 as the First Task Fleet) to 1 February 1973 in the western Pacific Ocean as part of the Pacific Fleet. In 1973, it was disestablished and its duties assumed by the Third Fleet.
Vice Admiral A. E. Montgomery was named as Commander, First Task Fleet, in an air station report of July 1947, with an inspection visit by a group of senior officers. The old cruiser Salt Lake City was sunkas an atomic bomb test target during First Task Fleet manoeuvers in May 1948.USSSalisbury Sound became the flagship of Vice Admiral G.F. Bogan (Commander First Task Fleet) on 25 March 1949. USSCurtiss served as flagship for Commander First Fleet early in 1949 for three weeks of amphibious operations in Alaskan waters to evaluate cold weather equipment. USSHelena served as flagship for Commander, First Fleet, from January 1960-March 1963. USSProvidence served as flagship in San Diego from 1969 until April 1972, except for yard overhaul in 1970 when USSChicago assumed the role.
On the 26th of January we celebrate Australia Day. But why do we mark it on that day in particular? To answer that question, Sarah will take you back in time to 1788, to meet some kids who came to Australia on the First Fleet.

Child convicts of Australia - Chapter 1 of 6 - Transportation and the First Fleet
From 1788, for 80 years, convicts were transported from Britain to New South Wales. These included children as young as nine years of age. What was life like for these children who had been sent to the other side of the world for crimes like petty theft?
All convicts, including children were expected to work. If they behaved badly, their youth did not protect them from being punished as harshly as adult convicts. Some child convicts went on to learn a trade, gain their freedom and live successful lives.
Step into the shoes of these child convicts to find out more about their stories.

What Actually Happened To Prisoners Sent To Australia?
In the early 1800's England would send convicts on a treacherous journey by sea to Australia. Those that survived the trip were put to work in the fields and do manual labor as part of their prison sentence. Australia turned out to be one of the most brutal places to settle and made lives for prisoners nearly unlivable.

Going ashore to investigate Captain Cook’s proposed site for the penal colony, Captain Phillip quickly chose to instead find a different location because the soil was poor quality and there was limited access to fresh water. After further exploration, 6 days later he moved the fleet a few kilometres north to Sydney Cove, and the British flag was raised. 48 people had died on route, but over 1,400 people survived to establish the first European outpost in Australia on the 26th January 1788, the date which still marks Australia Day.
