13th May 1787: The First Fleet departs for Australia
As well as over 1,000 convicts who had been sentenced to transportation, the ships also carried officers, crew, marines and their families.
It took 252 days for the six convict ships, three store ships, and two Royal Navy escort ships to complete the journey. The route involved the ships sailing first from Portsmouth to Tenerife, and then to Rio de Janeiro where they restocked their provisions and took livestock on board to establish the new settlement. They then sailed via Cape Town to Australia. This route ensured optimal usage of the prevailing winds to speed up the journey.
Despite the lengthy voyage and numerous dangers en route, the entire fleet of eleven ships arrived safely in Botany Bay. Going ashore to investigate Captain Cook’s proposed site for the penal colony, Captain P...

Child convicts of Australia - Chapter 1 of 6 - Transportation and the First Fleet
From 1788, for 80 years, convicts were transported from Britain to New South Wales. These included children as young as nine years of age. What was life like for these children who had been sent to the other side of the world for crimes like petty theft?
All convicts, including children were expected to work. If they behaved badly, their youth did not protect them from being punished as harshly as adult convicts. Some child convicts went on to learn a trade, gain their freedom and live successful lives.
Step into the shoes of these child convicts to find out more about their stories.

What Actually Happened To Prisoners Sent To Australia?
In the early 1800's England would send convicts on a treacherous journey by sea to Australia. Those that survived the trip were put to work in the fields and do manual labor as part of their prison sentence. Australia turned out to be one of the most brutal places to settle and made lives for prisoners nearly unlivable.

Going ashore to investigate Captain Cook’s proposed site for the penal colony, Captain Phillip quickly chose to instead find a different location because the soil was poor quality and there was limited access to fresh water. After further exploration, 6 days later he moved the fleet a few kilometres north to Sydney Cove, and the British flag was raised. 48 people had died on route, but over 1,400 people survived to establish the first European outpost in Australia on the 26th January 1788, the date which still marks Australia Day.

Why Does The US Plan To Revive The 1st Fleet?
The commander of the US Pacific Fleet, is studying the pros and cons of bringing back the US Navy's 1st Fleet. Admiral Philip S. Davidson, head of the Indo-Pacific Command, said that reviving the fleet is a necessary action in the current situation. Expected location of the 1st Fleet's base in the future, will be between the Indo-Pacific and the Pacific.
The 1st Fleet was established in 1946, under the payroll of the Pacific Fleet and performed mainly in the Western Pacific region. The 1st Fleet was disbanded in 1973 and after nearly 50 years, due to new developments in the Indo-Pacific, the US decided to re-establish this Fleet.

US should permanently place a new First Fleet in Darwin: Babones
University of Sydney Associate Professor Salvatore Babones has called for the United States to permanently place a new First Fleet in Darwin, given China is pointing a “hypothetical dagger” at Australia.
Discussing news China recently announced it will build a new $200 million fishery complex at Daru Island in PNG’s western province, Professor Babones said “everyone knows it’s not a fishing facility”.
“It’s clearly meant as a hypothetical dagger pointing at Australia saying ‘if you keep upsetting us we’ll keep putting on pressure’,” he told Sky News host Chris Smith.
Mr Babones said the proposal to support American allies via a re-established First Fleet is backed by the US Navy and would take some of the pressure off the Seventh Fleet – which is based in Japan.

Resurrecting the First Fleet for Great Power Competition
As the Chinese Navy has rapidly grown, so too has its Coast Guard and Maritime Militia. This places added stress on the U.S. Navy to uphold a rules-based order, while our regional partners struggle to secure their own waters.
Last November, the Secretary of the Navy sought to address this by resurrecting the defunct First Fleet and basing it at the crossroads of the Indo-Pacific. One would be forgiven in assuming the idea passed with the outgoing administration, but the facts on the ocean have made the idea a continuing priority. The Biden Administration’s recently-released interim national security strategic guidance makes a strong case for enhancing existing alliances and seeking new partners in the contest with China, and the Commander of the Pacific Fleet recently acknowledged an ongo...

B2 Spirit: US Most Feared Stealth Bomber Ever Made
The B2 Spirit, otherwise known as the B2 stealth bomber, is an aircraft that looks almost otherworldly with its iconic triangular silhouette and sleek, thin profile. It has the extraordinary capability of slipping in and out of enemy skies nearly undetected, carrying a devastating payload deep into hostile territory.
But how did this incredible machine come to be, and what makes it so special?
Developed during the Cold War, the B2 bomber was designed to give the United States Air Force an unmatched strategic edge. With a price tag that made it the most expensive aircraft ever built, was the investment really worth it? How does this strategic bomber manage to remain virtually invisible to radar, and what are the secrets behind its cutting-edge stealth technology?

“The idea that it (a new First Fleet) will mainly port in Singapore I think is fantastical, the Singaporean government does nothing ever to upset China, and this would upset China,” he said.
“Singapore is also a poor choice from a technical standpoint because they’re very crowded waters.
“Much better to have it somewhere close to the action, but where there’s more space, and I think Darwin is probably ideal from that standpoint.”

The Biden Administration’s recently-released interim national security strategic guidance makes a strong case for enhancing existing alliances and seeking new partners in the contest with China, and the Commander of the Pacific Fleet recently acknowledged an ongoing review of the idea.
As the season for a new South China Sea crisis approaches, there is no better person to assess the idea of a new First Fleet than the man who suggested it in the first place—Ambassador Kenneth Braithwaite, the 77th Secretary of the Navy.

In 1975, DARPA requested proposals for an aircraft with a reduced radar cross section, leading to the exploration of stealth technology. The concept of a strategic stealth bomber was solidified in the late 1970s with the Advanced Technology Bomber program, officially starting in 1981. Northrop/Boeing's design was selected over Lockheed/Rockwell's on October 20, 1981.
Originally intended as a high-altitude bomber, the B-2 was redesigned for low-altitude, terrain-following missions to enhance stealth capabilities. The B2 made its first public appearance on November 22, 1988, and completed its first flight on July 17, 1989, redefining air superiority and forever changing the landscape of military aviation technology.
