East Asia Summit foreign ministers' meeting convenes in Jakarta
Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi has opened the East Asia Summit in Jakarta. She said the Indo-Pacific is not a battleground, and the region must remain stable. This, against a backdrop of geopolitical tensions, particularly between the US and China -- whose top diplomats are attending the event. President Joko Widodo gave the visiting dignitaries a similar message. This week's ASEAN foreign ministers' summit has seen pledges of support from the US, China and Russia, but the event has also become a stage for indirect confrontation between the rivals.
