Classical Chinese (Chinese: 文言文; pinyin: wényán wén; literally: "literary language writing"), also known as "Literary Chinese", is the language of the classic literature from the end of the Spring and Autumn period through to the end of the Han Dynasty, a written form of Old Chinese. Classical Chinese is a traditional style of written Chinese that evolved from the classical language, making it different from any modern spoken form of Chinese. Literary Chinese was used for almost all formal writing in China until the early 20th century, and also, during various periods, in Japan, Korea and Vietnam. Among Chinese speakers, Literary Chinese has been largely replaced by written vernacular Chinese, a style of writing that is similar to modern spoken Mandarin Chinese, while speakers of non-Chinese languages have largely abandoned Literary Chinese in favor of local vernaculars.
Literary Chinese is known as kanbun in Japanese, hanmun in Korean (but see also gugyeol), and Hán văn in Vietnamese (From 漢文 in all three cases; pinyin: hànwén, "Han writing").

What Chinese once sounded like and how that was discovered throughout the ages... to be explained, not through the eyes of European linguistics, but in the old and venerable tradition of Chinese linguistics! Since ancient times Chinese scholars have been arguing about the right way to pronounce classic poetry and literature. Here's how they dug into the past and reconstructed the earlier sounds behind the characters. After a note about my struggles with Chinese phonology, our tale begins...

A chamber ensemble drawn from the larger University Symphony Orchestra joins forces with the Jade Chinese Music Ensemble for a very special concert that explores the intersection of two very different musical and cultural traditions. Jade Ensemble members Yini Sun, erhu, and Yuchen Zhou, guzheng, will be featured in Wu Houyuan’s Red Plum Capriccio and Zhanhao He’s The Eternal Sorrow of Lin’an, both scored for traditional Chinese instruments and western chamber orchestra. A selection of smaller chamber works, again combining the musical instruments and artistic idioms of East and West, rounds out this fascinating program.
