Route14 begins at a junction with Route66 (Main Street) in Willimantic, initially as Main Street which changes to Brick Top Road after 0.2 miles (0.32km). The road runs through Windham Center and briefly overlaps Route203 as North Road, shifting to Scotland Road as it heads into the town of Scotland. In Scotland, Route14 is known as Huntington Road and Palmer Road. Route14 continues east into the town of Canterbury where the road name changes to Westminster Road. The road intersects with Route169 in the town center, at which point the road name changes to Lovell Lane and Plainfield Road. Immediately after crossing the Quinebaug River into the town of Plainfield, Route14 turns left onto Black Hill Road while Route14A continues straight as Canterbury Road. Route14 passes through the village of Central Village as Main Street (while overlapped with Route12) then East Main Street. It crosses under I-395 at Exit 32 along the north bank of the Moosup River. East of I-395, Route14 heads into the village of Moosup where the road uses a pair of one-way streets. Eastbound traffic uses Ward Avenue while westbound traffice uses Prospect Street. Heading out of the town of Plainfield, Route14 uses Main Street then North Main Street, which later changes to Sterling Road near the town line. Sterling Road goes through the town center and meets with the east end of Route14A at the Rhode Island state line. The road continues as Rhode Island Route 14.
The bus route is the successor to the 14 Ellicott City, 23 Back and Middle Rivers, and East Fayette Streetstreetcar lines.
History
Route 23 began its service as an electrified rail and streetcar line between Middle River and downtown Baltimore in 1897 along much of the same route as today. The streetcar operated until 1942, until the line was converted into a rubber-tire bus service. During these years, Route 23 did not serve the west side of town at all. The western portion of today's route was primarily served by the no. 14 streetcar (no relationship to today's Route 14 that operates between Baltimore and Annapolis). Service was also provided through Essex and Middle River on the Back River Trolley.
While MTA used the zone system for its fares that was abolished in 1996, Route 14 was the only local bus that operated into Zone 5, the farthest out zone from Baltimore City, where the highest fares were paid.
History
The Annapolis and Baltimore Short Line Railroad began operating steam trains between Baltimore and Annapolis in 1887, and electrified their line in 1908. The Baltimore and Annapolis Railroad, formed in a 1935 reorganization, soon began operating buses to supplement its main line; buses replaced that main line on February 5, 1950. The MTA took over the bus route in 1973, and numbered it Route 14.
NY14 was assigned in 1924 to an alignment extending from Elmira to Sodus Point via Watkins Glen, Penn Yan, and Geneva. It was extended south to Pennsylvania by 1926 and realigned as part of the 1930 renumbering of state highways in New York to follow its modern routing alongside Seneca Lake between Watkins Glen and Geneva. Its former routing via Penn Yan became NY14A, NY14's lone suffixed route. While the general routing of NY14 has not changed since 1930, it has been realigned several times within the Elmira area. When it was first assigned, it used several different city streets, including Broadway, Main Street in Elmira, Lake Street, and Main Street in Horseheads. It was gradually reconfigured into its current routing over the years, with the last change coming c.2004 when the route was shifted onto most of the Clemens Center Parkway.
The Connecticut River is the longest river in the New England region of the United States. Flowing roughly southward for 406.12 miles (653.59km) through four U.S. states, the Connecticut rises at the U.S. border with Quebec, Canada, and discharges at Long Island Sound. Its watershed encompasses five U.S. states and one Canadian province – 11,260 square miles (29,200km2) – via 148 tributaries, 38 of which are major rivers. Discharging at 19,600 cubic feet (560m3) per second, the Connecticut produces 70% of Long Island Sound's freshwater.
The Connecticut River Valley is home to some of the northeastern United States' most productive farmland, as well as a metropolitan region of approximately 2 million people surrounding Springfield, Massachusetts, and the state of Connecticut's capital, Hartford.
Etymology
The word "Connecticut" is a French corruption of the Mohegan word quinetucket, which means "beside the long, tidal river". The word "Connecticut" came into existence during the early 1600s, describing the river, which was also called simply "The Great River".
