The Jaguar, a magnificent and ferocious big cat that originates from the Americas. Its name is derived from the languages of the native peoples of Amazonia and means ‘true beast’. But the Jaguar has another name – Panthera onca. This is its Latin binomial name, but why does it have one? What does it mean? Find out in this episode, as David explores how biologists classify life on earth.

Taxonomy and Taxonomic Hierarchy (Biological Classification of Living Things)
Taxonomy and taxonomic hierarchy i.e Biological Classification of Living Things is explained in this video lesson. This video explains the taxonomic hierarchy shows the taxonomic categories or ranks of living things. In the taxonomic hierarchy, the biological classification of living beings is divided into 7 levels of taxonomy which are Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Species.
What is Taxonomy and Taxonomic Hierarchy?
Taxonomy in biology refers to the classification of organisms based on their characteristics. This hierarchical system of ranking and classifying organisms to the species level is called taxonomic hierarchy i.e. biological classification of living things. Taxonomic hierarchy categories are also known as Linnaean hierarchy as they were introduced by Linnaeus...

Classification of Living Things
Learn how we classify living things using taxonomic rank. There are 8 levels of classification.
How do you create names for organisms that can be used anywhere in the world? This is where taxonomic classification, also called the Linnaean system, comes into play. Change music
Named after its inventor, Carl Linnaeus, a Swedish botanist, zoologist, and physician, the Linnaean classification system has 8 levels of classification. You may also hear this called a taxonomic rank. You will often see the levels displayed like a triangle. This is because the levels at the top are broad and general whereas the levels at the bottom are more specific. As you move down levels of taxonomic classification, the organisms will be more similar to one another.
The 8 levels of Taxonomic Classification are:

Taxonomic hierarchy categories are also known as Linnaean hierarchy as they were introduced by Linnaeus.
The broadest classifications are by domain and kingdom while the most specific classification is by genus and species. Each species has certain identifiers which are unique to them and describes them.

Domain
Kingdom
Phylum
Class
Order
Family
Genus
Species

Why don′t you fool me, feed me, say you need me
Without wicked games
C'mon and hold me, hug me, say you love me
And not my dirty brain
Why don′t you fool me, feed me, say you need me
Without wicked games
C'mon and hold me, hug me, say you love me
And not my dirty brain
I got one
Alabama return
That'll take me far away from you
Cos when you take me in your arms
I turn to slave, I can′t be saved
So I got my cappuccino to go
And I′m heading for the hills again
Cos if we party any more we'll start a fire
Of pure desire
Closer
Your mind′s flying blind
With your head and your face getting red
And your heart beats closer
You fall on your knees
And the geek at your feet says you're neat
And the beat gets closer
You die for the thrill
At the kill and your heart′s had its fill
But he still creeps closer
You want it to freeze
But you're weak, in too deep and the beat,
And the beat gets closer (closer)
Closer
Closer
Closer
We give it up
And then they take it away
A girl′s got to zip it up
And get her head in the shade
Baby, we give it up
It's just a matter of time
Before all the heavy stuff
Comes back to bite your behind
You can't mistake my biology
The way that we talk
The way that we walk
It′s there in our thoughts
The magic number′s in front of me
The way that we talk
The way that we walk
So easily caught
You can't mistake my biology
The way that we talk
The way that we walk
It′s there in our thoughts
We're gonna cause a controversy
The way that we talk
The way that we walk
So easily caught
Why don′t you fool me, feed me, say you need me
Without wicked games
C'mon and hold me, hug me, say you love me
And not my dirty brain
Why don′t you fool me, feed me, say you need me

Biology journal retracts 107 Chinese papers over fake peer-reviews
A major international publication, Springer Nature, has retracted 107 papers after discovering they had been accepted with fake peer reviews. All 524 authors involved are from China. The news has rattled the country's scientific community, and critics say academic dishonesty has been rampant due to a lack of serious punishment. While others argue that the publishers should also bear part of the responsibilities. After the news broke, Chinese newspaper The People's Daily commented, "Defending truth is defending the life of science." For more insight, Liu Xin is joined by Dr. Yan Shuai, Director of Journal Publishing at Tsinghua University Press.

Dragons cast a large shadow over the mythologies of the world. Few legendary monsters can compare to these gigantic beasts. But what if dragons cast… a slightly smaller shadow?
What if some dragons weren’t huge monsters, but strange and secretive creatures evolved to live hidden lives in the shadows and margins of the world? The amazing artist and writer Andy Frazer imagines a world where dragons are all around us, from the highest mountains to the deepest forest. Concentrated primarily in the author’s homeland of Wales, these smaller dragons — or ‘Microdragons’ as I call them – make up for their reduced size with their incredible diversity and ingenious survival strategies. The author has released many field guides on these tiny wonders that explore their evolution, anatomy, behavior, and habitats in great detail.
So, for this entry into the archive, I’ll assume the role of a naturalist and observe some of these creatures out in the field…
