How ’15-minute cities’ became a lockdown conspiracy - BBC Newsnight
To reduce carbon emissions and meet climate goals, politicians in Oxford are attempting to restrict the number of times some vehicles can drive through the city each year while still allowing unlimited access via the City's ring road.
The city also has a long-term plan to be a 15-minute city, where food, medicine, education, and leisure facilities are all within a 15-minute walk or cycle from someone’s front door.
This plan has been conflated with its traffic-restriction trial by conspiracy theories that present the measures as a form of climate lockdown.
Newsnight’s Science Correspondent Kate Lamble reports on how a conspiracy theory about "15-minute cities" became tangled with some people's real concerns over the measures.

‘We need clarity’ regarding who is an essential worker: Canterbury-Bankstown mayor
Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Khal Asfour says the community needs “clarity” regrading who is an essential worker because the NSW premier and the prime minister are sending mixed messages when it comes to financial support.
“I think there’s confusion when the premier’s telling everyone that if you’re an essential worker and you want to stay home, you’ll be eligible for support but this morning we hear the prime minster say that’s not the case,” he said.
“We need clarity, who’s entitled to support, when they can access it, what it means if they were to stay home, what it means if your boss doesn’t let you or doesn’t want you to stay home and you live in the south west of Sydney.
“Not many of us work from home, not many of us can work from home, and it’s important that we just get some cl...

Canterbury-Bankstown area 'hurting' but working to minimise spread of virus
Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Khal Asfour says “communities are hurting” but are ensuring they follow COVID-19 health advice after NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant said the local government area is of concern.
Mr Asfour said “majority of people in Canterbury-Bankstown are doing the right thing” as they do not “want to be in lockdown for any longer” than required.
“Communities are hurting but we have to follow the health advice,” he told Sky News host Chris Smith.
He said in order to get this advice across to people in the area, the council has “put out some strong messaging for everybody”.
“We’ve today, gone out really, really hard on our social media channels as a council.”

“Not many of us work from home, not many of us can work from home, and it’s important that we just get some clarity on what is essential because we have people that work from all types of industries.
“We need to make sure that everyone stays safe and no one’s out there in the community when they don’t need to be and that’s why we need clarity.
“We’ve got the premier saying one thing about financial support, we’ve got the prime minister saying another, it causes more confusion.”
