Why Taiwan HATES the Olympics?
The 1976 Olympics are a good example of the dramatic ways in which international relations can shift over time. At that point, Canada was hosting the Olympics in Montreal.
But there was a problem: Canada had a “One China Policy”, they only recognized The Peoples’ Republic of China (aka mainland China, the Communist one) as the legit government of China. At the time, Taiwan called itself “The Republic of China” because members of the government had fled mainland China when the civil war broke out. The name “Chinese Taipei” is sure to be heard at the Olympic Games this year, just like many other international sporting events. Some may recognize this team, while others are probably confused about where to find their country on a map. This is a documentary of how the official name of Taiwan’s sports teams (OR Team Taiwan) came to be.
It all started when the Chinese Civil War ended in 1949. A series of events unfolded leading to a 1981 decision to re-name Taiwan’s sports teams as team “Chinese Taipei.” A choice with lasting repercussions that are continuously felt in Taiwan to this day.
The story behind “Chinese Taipei” and the contention surrounding an ongoing identity crisis is about much more than meets the eye. Director Garret M. Clarke conducted interviews with athletes, sports professionals, and spectators alike because it was important to hear “Taiwanese people express their opinions in their own way.”
The name “Chinese Taipei” is a struggle for political power that dictates an athlete’s right to play as much as it denies sports fans and children around the world an opportunity to connect with Taiwan. Take a look behind the name to explore Taiwanese athletes’ tireless efforts to show themselves to the world.

Both considered themselves the legit governments of China.
Because of Canada’s relations with the PRC, Canada told the RoC that they could only compete in the Montreal Olympics under a different name- Taiwan. America went to bat for the Taiwanese, but Canada’s Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau wouldn’t budge. This led to US President Gerald Ford saying of Trudeau “he’s being a real bastard,” and in the end, Taiwan boycotted the Olympics.

If you know me, I love street food. There's something about eating outside that makes food taste even better and Taipei is the city of street foods.
There's so much to try and eat, and what I love most is the night market culture. In this video we visit some of the most iconic night markets in Taipei from ningxia, shilin, and raohe (shown in part 2!) trying the best of the best street food that taiwan has to offer.
Thank you so much to all the people of Taiwan for the amazing hospitality; special thanks to @chez.jorge and make sure to check out his book A Gong's Table!

Taipei has jumped to the top of our list for best city experiences in Asia. In this travel vlog, we share our full itinerary of what we got up to - Shilin and Raohe Food Night Market, discovering the Taipei Grand Trial, Beitou hot spring town, visiting the old Taipei around Dadaocheng and Dihua Street, Ximending and Zhongshan for shopping and nightlife, the Chih Nan Temple and of course, the iconic Taipei 101 building as we visit the 89th floor observation deck. We were invited by the Taipei Tourism Board and shown around all these areas by locals and tour guides. We finish with some travel guide tips for using public transport, the hotels we stayed at along with safety.

TAIPEI, TAIWAN - Welcome to Taiwan! Today we’re going on an ultimate Taiwanese street food tour to eat 5 of the best dishes that you don’t want to miss eating when you’re in Taipei. From beef noodles to scallion pancakes, these are five of the most iconic and delicious foods to try, and where to try them. Let’s eat!
1. Beef Noodles (牛肉麵)
Location: Liu Shandong Beef Noodles 劉山東牛肉麵 (https://goo.gl/maps/LcecTVDPrpZ6dcZ99)
Price: 160 TWD ($5.28) per bowl
Beef noodles are perhaps the single most famous of all Taiwanese foods, there are few things better than a giant bowl of thick noodles with a soothing beef bone broth, and Taiwan does it well. Liu Shandong Beef Noodles is one of the legends of Taiwanese beef noodles, old school, and droolworthy. It was an honor to have a kitchen tour with Taiwan’s King of beef noodles!
2. Lu Rou Fan (滷肉飯)
Location: Jin Da Lu Rou Fan 今大魯肉飯 (https://goo.gl/maps/3FvJook9MsF2mWbU6)
Total price - 170 TWD ($5.62)
Perhaps the single most iconic and loved dish in Taiwan for Taiwanese people is Lu Rou Fan (滷肉飯), a sauce made from braised pork belly to eat over rice. It has its origins in Taiwan when people needed to take a little meat and stretch the flavor, creating a flavorful gravy. It’s comfort food and something that is dear to the hearts of Taiwanese people.
3. Scallion Pancake (蔥抓餅)
Location: Hsiung Chi Scallion Pancake 雄記蔥抓餅 (https://goo.gl/maps/cZKPcMAcZY4WKRkA8)

Next up on this Taiwan street food tour we’re eating scallion pancakes, one of the most popular street food snacks. They pancakes are almost roti style and you can get them with eggs, or full on with egg, cheese, ham, sauces, and extra toppings. It’s fresh, tasty, gooey, and crispy all at the same time.
4. Stinky Tofu (臭豆腐)

Ah yes, stinky tofu, something your taste buds will never forget! It’s more than a meal, but an experience and something truly to be respected. This place makes all their own stinky tofu and we had the rare opportunity to taste a 2 year old fermented tofu - one of the stronger flavors I’ve ever experienced, WOW!
5. Dumplings (餃子)
Location: Dragon Inn Dumpling House 龍門客棧餃子館 (林森店) (https://goo.gl/maps/beZFz3MUVqNazHRE6)

Few things make me think about Taiwan and Taiwanese food more than dumplings and braised meats and parts. Dragon Inn serves legendary boiled dumplings and their cabinet of braised items is something truly impressive. What a meal, so good.
