Haarlem was granted city status or stadsrechten in 1245, although the first city walls were not built until 1270. The modern city encompasses the former municipality of Schoten as well as parts that previously belonged to Bloemendaal and Heemstede. Apart from the city, the municipality of Haarlem also includes the western part of the village of Spaarndam. Newer sections of Spaarndam lie within the neighbouring municipality of Haarlemmerliede en Spaarnwoude.
Geography
The city is located on the riverSpaarne, about 20km (12mi) west of Amsterdam and near the coastal dunes. It has been the historical centre of the tulip bulb-growing district for centuries and bears the nickname 'Bloemenstad' (flower city), for this reason.
"Netherlands" literally means "lower countries", influenced by its low land and flat geography, with only about 50% of its land exceeding one metre above sea level. Most of the areas below sea level are man-made. Since the late 16th century, large areas (polders) have been reclaimed from the sea and lakes, amounting to nearly 17% of the country's current land mass.
The 1979 European election was the first direct election to the European Parliament to be held and hence the first time the Netherlands had voted. Four parties were able to win seats: the conservative liberal VVD, the progressive liberal D66, the Christian-democratic CDA and the social-democratic Labour Party. Five other nationally represented parties compete but are unable to win seats. 58.1% of the Dutch population turned out on election day.
European groups
MEPs period 1979-1984
Below is a complete list of members of the European Parliament for the period 1979-1984 as a result of this election.
1984-1989
Dutch political parties
The 1984 European election was the second European election to be held. In these elections both an alliance of leftwing CPN, PSP and PPR parties (Green Progressive Accord) and the orthodox Protestant SGP, GPV, RPF parties have formed a successful common lists, which win two respectively one seat. the progressive liberal D'66 loses its two seats and disappears from the parliament. 50.9% of the Dutch population turned out on election day.
The four parts of the Kingdom–Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten and the Netherlands–are constituent countries (landen in Dutch) and participate on a basis of equality as partners in the Kingdom. In practice, however, most of the Kingdom affairs are administered by the Netherlands – which comprises roughly 98% of the Kingdom's land area and population – on behalf of the entire Kingdom. Consequently, the countries of Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten are dependent on the Netherlands for matters like foreign policy and defence, although they are autonomous to a certain degree with their own parliaments.
The vast majority in land area of the constituent country of the Netherlands (as well as the Kingdom) is located in Europe, with the exception of the Caribbean Netherlands: its three special municipalities (Bonaire, Saba, and Sint Eustatius) that are located in the Caribbean. The constituent countries of Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten are located in the Caribbean as well.

Haarlem has a rich history of culture and arts. It is the home to four museums including the Frans Hals Museum. Haarlem is an excellent place for those who want to visit Dutch culture.
Haarlem is home to an array of inspirational galleries and museums. The most popular one being the Teyler's Museum . This museum houses some exquisite pieces including ones done by Rembrandt, Caravaggio, and many more!
The second most popular museum within Haarlem is the Frans Hals Museum . This one includes paintings from famous artists such as Paul Cezanne, Vincent van Gogh, and Piet Mondriaan.
Haarlem also has a couple of really nice churches. The first church seen below is the St Bavo's Cathedral which is also known as Grote Kerk Haarlem. The second church is St Mary's Church, or Oude Kerk. It was built in the 14th century and today it acts as a museum open to the public!
If you are interested in history, Haarlem has no shortage of historical places too. One example being the Haarlem City Hall . Another historical building is the Haarlem Public Library . It was built in 1642 and also functions as a museum.
Today Haarlem still has plenty of old buildings ranging from museums to churches and more! The city itself has been largely preserved to give people a taste of Dutch culture for centuries past.
The view from the tower of St Bavo's Cathedral. It is one of Haarlem's most famous tourist attractions.

What are the pros and cons of living in The Netherlands? It doesn't matter whether you're relocating for business, education, or just because you want a change of scenery; moving to a new nation may be stressful for a lot of people. Therefore, before to deciding to live in Holland, you have to take into consideration a variety of variables, including the cost of living, the community, the school system, the level of safety, the availability of employment, and the environment. According to the third rule of Newton, which states that "every act has an equal and opposing response," living in the Netherlands has both positive and negative aspects to it.
Consider all of the perks of living in the Netherlands, then make a final decision about making the move there.
PROS:
1. High Quality Education
The World Economic Forum places the Netherlands at the third spot on its list of countries with the highest levels of education. It is estimated that around 81% of persons between the ages of 25 and 64 have finished at least their upper secondary school, which is greater than the average for the OECD, which is 79%. If you are relocating with your children, you do not need to worry about their education since pupils continue to gain knowledge and the capacity to read and write, as well as research, mathematics, scientific, economic, and social skills. If you are relocating with your kids, you are already safe and secure. In addition, the school system in the Netherlands promotes you to grow in your chosen field of work.
2. Healthcare
Having health insurance is a legal requirement in the Netherlands, and residents are expected to comply. As a result of the relatively high cost of the compulsory monthly payment for health insurance, a great number of individuals are unsatisfied with it. However, this is a significant perk of living in the Netherlands as a Dutch citizen: you will never have to spend a significant amount of money out of pocket to obtain medical assistance. This is a government benefit. Some people get the impression that they are throwing their money away since they don't need medical attention too often. However, once they reach the point where they need medical attention, they will get it.
3. A Low Rate of Crime
The Netherlands was classified as the 21st safest nation in the world according to the World's Safest Country ranking for the year 2021. However, your safety is not completely assured no matter where you go since you run the risk of becoming a victim of small crimes such as pickpocketing. When travelling to a new country, safety is a valid worry for everyone, but it is particularly important for households with kids and women who are traveling alone. The Netherlands are a rather risk-free destination. However, you should stay away from places with a high crime rate and adopt the appropriate safety measures. Taking sensible measures, such as securing your home and vehicle behind you when you leave, installing a burglar alarm, and so on.
4. It’s Small and Easy to Get Around
Because the Netherlands is not a very huge country, getting around to its many cities is not difficult. There is an abundance of public transit options obtainable in every given location, including railroads, buses, trolleys, and metros.

In this video we explore Haarlem. A short train ride from Amsterdam, the vibrant Dutch city is often overlooked by tourists and locals. But with its rich culture, scenery and attractions, it is certainly worth a visit, particularly for those wanting to see a side of the Netherlands other than that presented by the country's famous and chaotic capital. Join us as we visit various attractions including the city’s grand central train station, a local market, a highly-regarded traditional fish stand (Leo van Rhijn) and the National Park Zuid-Kennemerland.

New Amsterdam Travel Video- The city of Haarlem has everything, except the hustle and bustle of a big city like Amsterdam. One of the oldest cities in the Netherlands it was also one of the biggest back before Amsterdam's importance grew in the Golden Age. Only 15 minute train ride from Amsterdam, it is a wonderful daytrip where you will find old churches and cathedrals, boats and waterways, art and science museums, shopping on cobblestoned streets and plenty of narrow streets and alleyways to explore. There's even a popular brewery were you can enjoy the best craft beers. Besides Amsterdam, Haarlem is a must for your travel itinerary. #haarlem #amsterdam #holland

Overlooking the city, you can see the highlights including St Bavo's Cathedral and St Mary's Church.

You’ve probably already seen my going to every coffeeshop in one day video, but a lot of people said I should check out the coffeeshops outside of Amsterdam. People are always saying it’s better outside of the city, so today I’m starting a series going to every coffeeshop in smaller towns in the Netherlands. Today we have Haarlem!
Haarlem is a city and municipality in the Netherlands. It is the capital of the province of North Holland.
Haarlem is a charming city featuring great culture, cafés, shops and restaurants. As well as being home to some of the Netherlands’ best museums and world-famous art, it is regularly voted as one of the country's best cities for shopping. There’s plenty to keep you entertained – including river cruises, weekly markets and more.
With its ancient buildings, cobbled streets and winding waterways, the medieval city of Haarlem is one of the most photogenic destinations in the Netherlands. Easily reachable by train, just 15 minutes from Amsterdam Central Station. Haarlem beats with its own vibrant pulse, overflowing with a rich history, epoch-spanning architecture and a thriving cultural scene all of its own.

A brief history of Haarlem
Take a whistle-stop tour of the history of Haarlem. From the earliest archaeological find from the Stone Age to the first inhabitants of the area on the river Spaarne. See how Grote or St. Bavokerk church was built over many years, and experience the glory days of the Golden Age and the construction of the first Dutch railway line between Amsterdam and Haarlem.
Do also take a look around the Anno Haarlem visitor centre in the town hall of Haarlem.
