Following liberation, Queen Wilhelmina initially appointed an emergency cabinet. On 16 May 1946 Dutch voters elected their first post-war parliament. Made up of Social Democrats, Protestants and Catholics, the newly founded Labour Party considered the construction of a democratic socialist society as vital to prevent a resurgence of fascism and war. It sought to draw members from all social “pillars.” Gaining 28.3 per cent of the vote, it became a coalition partner in the government. The strongest party was the Catholic People’s Party.

Lithuania votes in General Election
http://www.euronews.com/ Lithuania's Social Democrat and Labour opposition parties are looking to consolidate first-round gains in today's parliamentary election second round.
Voters are having to struggle through a thick snowfall as winter arrives in the Baltic state, and the results will start coming this evening.
The ruling Conservatives and Prime Minister Kubilius are nursing first-round losses after four years of austerity policies they claim saved Lithuania from bankruptcy, and turned around 2009's near-15% economic contraction to this year's forecast 2.5% growth.

Lithuanians casting ballots in parliamentary elections rejected the current ruling coalition for the populist Labour Party.
Champagne corks popped at the Vilnius Crowne Plaza Hotel, where Labour supporters celebrated their victory.
With 80 percent of the votes counted from Sunday's election, the central electoral committee said Labour won 30.8 percent, while the two parties of the incumbent ruling coalition - the Social Democrats and New Union - together received 20.4 percent.
The conservative Fatherland Union received 13 percent, and 11.6 percent went to the Liberal Democratic party, created by Lithuanian ex-President Rolandas Paksas, who was impeached this year amid allegations of divulging state secrets to a controversial Russian financier.
The Peasants' Party and liberal Centre Union each won seven percent.
Turnout was a record low, with only 45 percent of registered voters casting ballots for the 602 candidates running for the 141-seat parliament.

Badenoch spars with Starmer over Labour’s view of Donald Trump at PMQs
Kemi Badenoch made jibes about Labour’s view of the US president-elect in her first PMQs as opposition leader.

She questioned Keir Starmer's commitment to protecting the UK's 'special relationship' with Washington, asked him about comments made by the foreign secretary, David Lammy, about Donald Trump, and brought up the fact that when Trump was last in office, Labour MPs signed a motion saying he should not be allowed to speak in Westminster Hall. The prime minister assured the house that he would work with Trump on issues of mutual interest, but did not directly answer Badenoch's questions

Trump campaign accuses UK’s Labour Party of US election interference | BBC News
Donald Trump's campaign has accused the UK's Labour Party of election interference, as it sends volunteers to campaign for Kamala Harris in the US election.
Trump's team complained to the Federal Election Commission, and said "illegal foreign assistance" is a "another feeble attempt in a long line of anti-American election interference”.
The dispute began with a LinkedIn post from Labour's head of operations, asking for people to travel to the US, saying nearly 100 were already going.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has played down the row, telling reporters that Labour volunteers “have gone over pretty much every election”.

REVEALED: Why Labour fear Nigel Farage's Reform UK more than a Tory Government | Election 2024
Paying out millions of pounds a day to house illegal migrants in hotels is an "absolute disgrace", one of the Labour party's rising star MPs has told GB News.
Chris Curtis, elected MP for Milton Keynes North in July's general election, said that he found it "offensive" that public money was being used to keep illegal arrivals in hotels.
Earlier this week, it emerged that the Government was continuing to house asylum seekers in hotels despite Labour’s manifesto pledge to end the practice which costs £7million a day.
Curtis told Chopper’s political podcast this week regarding the previous administration that there was “a massive black hole that lurks in the economy” and he added that “the most offensive one is hotel bills”.
He said: "We're taking hard earned taxpayers money out of thei...

He said: "We're taking hard earned taxpayers money out of their pockets. It's an absolute disgrace. We need to be shutting down those hotel bills. But you can't do that with a ridiculous Rwanda gimmick."
Sit back, pour yourself a drink and join GB News' Political Editor Christopher Hope at his regular table in a Westminster pub where he will discuss the latest insider political intrigue and gossip with everyone from popstars to politicians. New episodes released every Friday.
