Virunga National Park
The Virunga National Park (French: Parc National des Virunga), formerly named Albert National Park, is a 7,800-square-kilometre (3,000 sq mi) National Park that stretches from the Virunga Mountains in the South, to the Rwenzori Mountains in the North, in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, bordering Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Rwenzori Mountains National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda.
The park was established in 1925 as Africa's first national park and is a UNESCO-designated World Heritage Site since 1979. In recent years poaching and the Congo Civil War have seriously damaged its wildlife population. The park is managed by the Congolese National Park Authorities, the Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature (ICCN) and its partner the Virunga Foundation, formerly known as the Africa Conservation Fund (UK).
History
The park was created in 1925 by King Albert I of Belgium as the first national park on the continent of Africa. It was founded primarily to protect the mountain gorillas living in the forests of the Virunga Mountains controlled by the Belgian Congo, but later expanded north to include the Rwindi Plains, Lake Edward and the Rwenzori Mountains in the far north.

Prince Albert National Park
Prince Albert National Park encompasses 3,874 square kilometres (1,496 sq mi) in central Saskatchewan, Canada and is located 200 kilometres (120 mi) north of Saskatoon. Though declared a national park March 24, 1927, it had its official opening ceremonies on August 10, 1928 performed by Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King. The park is open all year but the most visited period is from May to September. Although named for the city, the park's main entrance is actually 80 km (50 mi) north of Prince Albert via Highways 2 and 263 which enters the park at its southeast corner. Two additional secondary highways enter the park: No. 264, which branches off Hwy. 2 just east of the Waskesiu townside, and No. 240, which enters the park from the south and links with 263 just outside the entry fee-collection gates.
The park ranges in elevation from 488 metres (1,601 ft) on the western side to 724 metres (2,375 ft) on the eastern side.
Waskesiu is the only town within the park, located on the southern shore of Waskesiu Lake. Most facilities and services one would expect to find in a multi-use park are available, such as souvenir shops, small grocery stores, a gas station, a laundromat, restaurants, hotels and motels, rental cabins, a small movie theatre (which adds showings on rainy and cold days), Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) detachment, camp grounds, three marinas, many beaches, picnic areas, tennis courts and lawn bowling greens. The facilities and services combine recreational and nature experiences. Notably, the park contains the Waskesiu Golf Course designed by famed golf course architect Stanley Thompson who also designed the course in Banff National Park.

National park
A national park is a park in use for conservation purposes. Often it is a reserve of natural, semi-natural, or developed land that a sovereign state declares or owns. Although individual nations designate their own national parks differently, there is a common idea: the conservation of 'wild nature' for posterity and as a symbol of national pride. An international organization, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and its World Commission on Protected Areas, has defined "National Park" as its Category II type of protected areas.
While this type of national park had been proposed previously, the United States established the first "public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people", Yellowstone National Park, in 1872. Although Yellowstone was not officially termed a "national park" in its establishing law, it was always termed such in practice and is widely held to be the first and oldest national park in the world. The first area to use "national park" in its creation legislation was the US's Mackinac Island, in 1875. Australia's Royal National Park, established in 1879, was the world's third official national park. In 1895 ownership of Mackinac Island was transferred to the State of Michigan as a state park and national park status was consequently lost. As a result, Australia's Royal National Park is by some considerations the second oldest national park now in existence.

List of national parks of the United States
The United States has 59 protected areas known as national parks that are operated by the National Park Service, an agency of the Department of the Interior. National parks must be established by an act of the United States Congress. The first national park, Yellowstone, was signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant in 1872, followed by Mackinac National Park in 1875 (decommissioned in 1895), and then Rock Creek Park (later merged into National Capital Parks), Sequoia and Yosemite in 1890. The Organic Act of 1916 created the National Park Service "to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and wildlife therein, and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations." Many current National Parks had been previously protected as National Monuments by the President under the Antiquities Act before being upgraded by Congress. Seven national parks (six in Alaska) are paired with a National Preserve. While administered together, they are considered as separate units and their areas are not included in the figures below. The newest national park is Pinnacles National Park, upgraded in 2013.

Two British tourists were ambushed and kidnapped last week after going to see mountain gorillas at the Virunga National Park. They have since been released. At the Senkwekwe Center for mountain gorilla orphans in Congo, a handful of Virunga National Park rangers live around the clock with four juveniles whose parents were killed. The rangers see their families only every few weeks and are very close to their charges. Chief caretaker André Bauma along with his team have hand-raised the gorillas since they were first brought to the center. The first gorilla, Ndakasi, was found when she was just two months old, near the body of her murdered mother. Bauma cared for her like a human child—letting her sleep on his chest for warmth and bottle-feeding her to help build her strength. Six Gorilla Rangers Killed in Virunga National Park
Armed men on sunday killed at least six rangers and wounded several others in an ambush in Virunga National Park. Officials attributed the attack on Sunday to Mai-Mai fighters, an umbrella name for a loosely affiliated group of local militias who are battling for power and resources in eastern Congo. Virunga national park has for years been the victim of repeated attacks from rebels and militia groups. Mountain Gorilla Trekking In Virunga National Park, Congo DRC | 2018
In late 2017, we traveled to Virunga National Park located in the Democratic Republic of Congo to track the incredible mountain gorillas. Virunga National Park is one of only 3 places in the world where you can come face to face with mountain gorillas in the wild (Uganda and Rwanda are the other two). And although most travel advisories urged us to forego travel to the DRC, due to the unstable situation in the region, we choose to support the park, its rangers, and it's mountain gorillas by spending our tourist dollars on this incredible wildlife experience. At the Senkwekwe Center for mountain gorilla orphans in Congo, a handful of Virunga National Park rangers live around the clock with four juveniles whose parents were killed. The rangers see their families only every few weeks and are very close to their charges. Chief caretaker André Bauma along with his team have hand-raised the gorillas since they were first brought to the center. The first gorilla, Ndakasi, was found when she was just two months old, near the body of her murdered mother. Bauma cared for her like a human child—letting her sleep on his chest for warmth and bottle-feeding her to help build her strength. After that, three more orphaned gorillas joined "the family" at the center. Since no mountain gorilla orphan has ever been successfully returned to the wild, they will always depend on humans. Virunga National Park is one of only 3 places in the world where you can come face to face with mountain gorillas in the wild (Uganda and Rwanda are the other two). And although most travel advisories urged us to forego travel to the DRC, due to the unstable situation in the region, we choose to support the park, its rangers, and it's mountain gorillas by spending our tourist dollars on this incredible wildlife experience.
Thanks to the rangers, guides, and the wonderful staff at the Virunga National Park, our visit to the park was INCREDIBLE!

Waskesiu River Trail 2.5 km Loop Rating - Easy. The first section of the trail is a man made walkway that meanders along the side of the Waskesiu River. This is perfect for families with young children and it is also wheelchair accessible. Along this first section of trail there is a few rest stops to walk out and view the river, and they are nice spots to capture some photographs. The first section of the trail is a man made walkway that meanders along the side of the Waskesiu River. This is perfect for families with young children and it is also wheelchair accessible. Along this first section of trail there is a few rest stops to walk out and view the river, and they are nice spots to capture some photographs.
The remaining 2km is an easier trek through the forest area, which will loop you all the way back to the river and close to the parking area.

At the Senkwekwe Center for mountain gorilla orphans in Congo, a handful of Virunga National Park rangers live around the clock with four juveniles whose parents were killed. The rangers see their families only every few weeks and are very close to their charges. Chief caretaker André Bauma along with his team have hand-raised the gorillas since they were first brought to the center. The first gorilla, Ndakasi, was found when she was just two months old, near the body of her murdered mother. Bauma cared for her like a human child—letting her sleep on his chest for warmth and bottle-feeding her to help build her strength. After that, three more orphaned gorillas joined "the family" at the center. Since no mountain gorilla orphan has ever been successfully returned to the wild, they will always depend on humans. Armed men on sunday killed at least six rangers and wounded several others in an ambush in Virunga National Park. Officials attributed the attack on Sunday to Mai-Mai fighters, an umbrella name for a loosely affiliated group of local militias who are battling for power and resources in eastern Congo.
Virunga national park has for years been the victim of repeated attacks from rebels and militia groups. In late 2017, we traveled to Virunga National Park located in the Democratic Republic of Congo to track the incredible mountain gorillas.
Virunga National Park is one of only 3 places in the world where you can come face to face with mountain gorillas in the wild (Uganda and Rwanda are the other two). And although most travel advisories urged us to forego travel to the DRC, due to the unstable situation in the region, we choose to support the park, its rangers, and it's mountain gorillas by spending our tourist dollars on this incredible wildlife experience.
Thanks to the rangers, guides, and the wonderful staff at the Virunga National Park, our visit to the park was INCREDIBLE!

Virunga National Park
The Virunga National Park (French: Parc National des Virunga), formerly named Albert National Park, is a 7,800-square-kilometre (3,000 sq mi) National Park that stretches from the Virunga Mountains in the South, to the Rwenzori Mountains in the North, in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, bordering Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Rwenzori Mountains National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda.
The park was established in 1925 as Africa's first national park and is a UNESCO-designated World Heritage Site since 1979. In recent years poaching and the Congo Civil War have seriously damaged its wildlife population. The park is managed by the Congolese National Park Authorities, the Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature (ICCN) and its partner the Virunga Foundation, formerly known as the Africa Conservation Fund (UK).
History
The park was created in 1925 by King Albert I of Belgium as the first national park on the continent of Africa. It was founded primarily to protect the mountain gorillas living in the forests of the Virunga Mountains controlled by the Belgian Congo, but later expanded north to include the Rwindi Plains, Lake Edward and the Rwenzori Mountains in the far north.

Waskesiu River Trail 2.5 km Loop
Rating - Easy.
The first section of the trail is a man made walkway that meanders along the side of the Waskesiu River. This is perfect for families with young children and it is also wheelchair accessible. Along this first section of trail there is a few rest stops to walk out and view the river, and they are nice spots to capture some photographs.
The remaining 2km is an easier trek through the forest area, which will loop you all the way back to the river and close to the parking area.
