Baghdad
Baghdad (Arabic: بغداد ,بغداد Kurdish: Bexda, Iraqi pronunciation: [bɐʁˈd̪ɑːd̪]) is the capital of the Republic of Iraq. The population of Baghdad, as of 2011, is approximately 7,216,040, making it the largest city in Iraq, the second largest city in the Arab world (after Cairo, Egypt), and the second largest city in Western Asia (after Tehran, Iran). According to the government, the population of the country has reached 35 million, with 9 million in the capital.
Located along the Tigris River, the city was founded in the 8th century and became the capital of the Abbasid Caliphate. Within a short time of its inception, Baghdad evolved into a significant cultural, commercial, and intellectual center for the Islamic world. This, in addition to housing several key academic institutions (e.g. House of Wisdom), garnered the city a worldwide reputation as the "Center of Learning".
Throughout the High Middle Ages, Baghdad was considered to be the largest city in the world with an estimated population of 1,200,000 people. The city was largely destroyed at the hands of the Mongol Empire in 1258, resulting in a decline that would linger through many centuries due to frequent plagues and multiple successive empires. With the recognition of Iraq as an independent state (formerly the British Mandate of Mesopotamia) in 1938, Baghdad gradually regained some of its former prominence as a significant center of Arab culture.

Baghdad (EP)
Baghdad is a 7-inchEP released by American punk rock band The Offspring on May 15, 1991. It is currently out of print, but sold 3000 copies within one week of its release. Although Baghdad has never been reissued on CD in its entirety, one of the songs were later released on compilations: "Baghdad" was released on Rock Against Bush, Vol. 1 (Fat Wreck Chords, 2004). The band's official website does not list Baghdad in the otherwise comprehensive discography anymore (as of July 2013, the website lists only the studio albums and their Greatest Hits compilation album).

The EP includes an early version of "Get It Right" of which a later version was released on their second studio album Ignition. The title track "Baghdad" was a re-recording of the song "Tehran" which appeared on the Offspring's debut self-titled album in 1989. It switches the words "Tehran" (the capital of Iran) for "Baghdad" (the capital of Iraq). The EP also includes a cover version of "Hey Joe" by Billy Roberts (a different version from what was later released on "Gone Away") and a previous unreleased instrumental track "The Blurb", which would not appear on any future recordings, but served as the basis for an early version of "Genocide", as well as "Change the World".

Baghdad (West Syrian Diocese)
Baghdad was a diocese of the Syrian Orthodox Church, attested between the ninth and thirteenth centuries. The diocese was probably established soon after Baghdad became the capital of the ʿAbbasid caliphate in the 770s. Eight Jacobite bishops of Baghdad are mentioned in the narratives of Michael the Syrian, Bar Hebraeus and other sources.

Iraq (/ɪˈræk/,

The country borders Turkey to the north, Iran to the east, Kuwait to the southeast, Saudi Arabia to the south, Jordan to the southwest, and Syria to the west. The southern part of Iraq is within the Arabian Peninsula. The capital, Baghdad, is in the centre of the country and its largest city. The largest ethnic groups in Iraq are Arabs and Kurds. Other ethnic groups include Assyrians, Turkmen, Shabakis, Yazidis, Armenians, Mandeans, Circassians, and Kawliya. Around 95% of the country's 36 million citizens are Shia or Sunni Muslims, with Christianity, Yarsan, Yezidism, and Mandeanism also present.
Iraq has a narrow section of coastline measuring 58 km (36 mi) on the northern Persian Gulf and its territory encompasses the Mesopotamian Alluvial Plain, the northwestern end of the Zagros mountain range, and the eastern part of the Syrian Desert. Two major rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates, run south through the centre of Iraq and flow into the Shatt al-Arab near the Persian Gulf. These rivers provide Iraq with significant amounts of fertile land.

Mandatory Iraq
The Kingdom of Iraq under British Administration or Mandatory Iraq (Arabic: الانتداب البريطاني على العراق al-Intidāb al-Brīṭānī ‘Alá al-‘Irāq) was created in 1921 following the 1920 Iraqi Revolt against the proposed British Mandate of Mesopotamia, and enacted via the 1922 Anglo-Iraqi Treaty.
Faisal ibn Husayn, who had been proclaimed King of Syria by a Syrian National Congress in Damascus in March 1920, was ejected by the French in July of the same year. Faisal was then granted by the British the territory of Iraq, to rule it as a kingdom, with the British Royal Air Force (RAF) retaining certain military control, though de facto; the territory remained under British administration until 1932.
The civil government of postwar Iraq was headed originally by the High Commissioner, Sir Percy Cox, and his deputy, Colonel Arnold Wilson. British reprisals after the murder of a British officer in Najaf failed to restore order. The most striking problem facing the British was the growing anger of the nationalists, who continued to fight against the imposition of British authority. British administration had yet to be established in Iraqi Kurdistan.

Widely considered to be the one of the cradles of civilization by the Western world, Bronze Age Mesopotamia included Sumer and the Akkadian, Babylonian, and Assyrian empires, all native to the territory of modern-day Iraq. In the Iron Age, it was controlled by the Neo-Assyrian and Neo-Babylonian Empires.
The indigenous Sumerians and Akkadians (including Assyrians and Babylonians) dominated Mesopotamia from the beginning of written history (c. 3100 BC) to the fall of Babylon in 539 BC, when it was conquered by the Achaemenid Empire. It fell to Alexander the Great in 332 BC, and after his death, it became part of the Greek Seleucid Empire.

Back when Paris and London were home to 20,000 people over 1 Million Baghdadi's lived here among canals, libraries, and palm trees.

Baghdad, a city that has risen and fallen countless times over the centuries, is enjoying a period of relative peace. I took the opportunity to walk the streets of a city that I had long wanted to explore.
The capital of Iraq has spent much of the last 20 years in turmoil, but there are few more resilient cities in the world. It has rebuilt itself many times over.
There has been a settlement here on the Tigris for nearly 4000 years. The famous fortified round city from the 8th century developed into the richest city in the world. An epicentre of trade and learning. Then came the sieges of the Persians and the Mongols, and the destruction of Tamerlane, not to mention catastrophic floods and plagues. Ottoman rule from the 15th century then gave way to British rule, followed by the regime of Saddam Hussein, followed by the American invasion which led to sectarian civil war. Thankfully Islamic State were held back, but only just. If ever a city deserved a period of peace its Baghdad. But you won’t find much peace on the roads. Don’t think of renting a car here. Red lights have no meaning and there appear to be no rules.
No target was off-limits during the worst years of the civil unrest. The Mutanabi street book market, long a symbol of intellectual freedom, was blown apart by a car bomb in 2007. 30 people were killed. The wreckage of the car is now an exhibit at the Imperial War Museum in London.

There were no winners in the tragic Iran - Iraq War but Saddam nonetheless erected a victory arch with replicas of his own hands holding two swords. It stands in the Green zone, a heavy guarded city within a city which houses government buildings, embassies and residences of the Baghdad elite. An enduring symbol of the fragile peace in this city.
A monument that I was keen to see was the Martys Monument. Two Giant tear drops commemorating both those killed in the war with Iran and now also the Kurdish and Shia victims of Saddam Hussein. Access is restricted but you can’t help but be moved by the significance of this vast sculpture.
It’s estimated that 15,000 items were stolen. Many have been lost forever, but the work that has been done to reassemble Iraq’s heritage is remarkable. The museum houses so many treasures from sites such as Babylon, Hatta, Nineveh, and Nimrod that the casual observer would never be able to image what had happened here. It may lack a shop, a cafe and the other facilities of its cousins in Paris, London and New York, but make no mistake, this is a world class museum.
Apart from the museum there is little other evidence of the richness of Baghdad’s past. The city is choked with traffic, and sprawls in all directions with little evidence of investment and development when compared say to Erbil in Kurdistan. The international hotel chains are still absent. But some new developments are being marketed so perhaps the cityscape may be very different in ten years time, if the peace can be maintained,but whatever is coming next Baghdad will endure, as it always has.

While the US bombardment of Baghdad had begun on 19 March, this had in fact consisted of relatively limited strikes targetting Saddam Hussein, senior regime officials, and other specific targets. At 17:00 UTC on 21 March, the air campaign moved into the next phase. In one night, 504 cruise missiles were launched at Baghdad's government district. The pictures captured by ITN's cameras that night are to this day considered defining images of the 2003 invasion and the Iraq War as a whole.

Wali is a handsome young man who is known for his rude and arrogant behaviour. After learning his lesson early on in his life, Wali values and cares about honour a lot. Rather than seeing things in grey, Wali is accustomed to perceiving things either in black or white. Wali’s cousin and competitor, Daniyal is jealous of Wali’s persona and leaves no opportunity to defame or ridicule him. On the other hand, Anabia is an obedient and disciplined young girl who along with her mother travels to attend the wedding of one of their distant relatives. One unfortunate incident changes the course of Wali, Daniyal and Anabia’s life forever. Daniyal's approach towards Anabia drastically impacts her life and soon Daniyal’s growing aggression begins to bother Wali who develops a soft corner for Anabia. Will Wali find the courage to stand up for Anabia and her rights or will he continue to live with regrets?

The story revolves around a big joint family where certain complicated familial ties leave everyone jealous and insecure about their lives due to egos & unsettled conflicts of the past. Wali is a handsome young man who is known for his rude and arrogant behaviour. After learning his lesson early on in his life, Wali values and cares about honour a lot. Rather than seeing things in grey, Wali is accustomed to perceiving things either in black or white. Wali’s cousin and competitor, Daniyal is jealous of Wali’s persona and leaves no opportunity to defame or ridicule him. On the other hand, Anabia is an obedient and disciplined young girl who along with her mother travels to attend the wedding of one of their distant relatives. One unfortunate incident changes the course of Wali, Daniyal and Anabia’s life forever. Daniyal's approach towards Anabia drastically impacts her life and soon Daniyal’s growing aggression begins to bother Wali who develops a soft corner for Anabia. Will Wali find the courage to stand up for Anabia and her rights or will he continue to live with regrets?

As vice president under the ailing General Ahmed Hassan al-Bakr, and at a time when many groups were considered capable of overthrowing the government, Saddam created security forces through which he tightly controlled conflicts between the government and the armed forces. In the early 1970s, Saddam nationalized oil and foreign banks leaving the system eventually insolvent mostly due to the Iran–Iraq War, the Gulf War, and UN sanctions.[11] Through the 1970s, Saddam cemented his authority over the apparatus of government as oil money helped Iraq's economy to grow at a rapid pace. Positions of power in the country were mostly filled with Sunni Arabs, a minority that made up only a fifth of the population.[12]
Saddam formally rose to power in 1979, although he had already been the de facto head of Iraq for several years. He suppressed several movements, particularly Shi'a and Kurdish movements which sought to overthrow the government or gain independence, respectively,[13] and maintained power during the Iran–Iraq War and the Gulf War. Whereas some in the Arab world lauded Saddam for opposing the United States and attacking Israel,[14][15] he was widely condemned for the brutality of his dictatorship. The total number of Iraqis killed by the security services of Saddam's government in various purges and genocides is conservatively estimated to be 250,000.[16] Saddam's invasions of Iran and Kuwait also resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths. He acquired the title "Butcher of Baghdad"
In 2003, a coalition led by the United States invaded Iraq to depose Saddam, in which United States President George W. Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair falsely[20] accused him of possessing weapons of mass destruction and having ties to al-Qaeda. Saddam's Ba'ath party was disbanded and elections were held. Following his capture on 13 December 2003, the trial of Saddam took place under the Iraqi Interim Government. On 5 November 2006, Saddam was convicted by an Iraqi court of crimes against humanity related to the 1982 killing of 148 Iraqi Shi'a, and sentenced to death by hanging. He was executed on 30 December 2006

The capital, and largest city, is Baghdad. Iraq is home to diverse ethnic groups including Arabs, Kurds, Assyrians, Turkmen, Shabakis, Yazidis, Armenians, Mandeans, Circassians, Sabians and Kawliya.[6] Around 99% of the country's 38 million citizens are Muslims,[7] with tiny minorities of Christians, Yarsans, Yezidis and Mandeans also present. Iraq has a coastline measuring 58 km (36 miles) on the northern Persian Gulf and encompasses the Mesopotamian Alluvial Plain, the northwestern end of the Zagros mountain range and the eastern part of the Syrian Desert.[8] Two major rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates, run south through Iraq and into the Shatt al-Arab near the Persian Gulf. These rivers provide Iraq with significant amounts of fertile land. The region between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, historically known as Mesopotamia, is often referred to as the cradle of civilisation. It was here that mankind first began to read, write, create laws and live in cities under an organised government—notably Uruk, from which "Iraq" is derived. The area has been home to successive civilisations since the 6th millennium BC. Iraq was the centre of the Akkadian, Sumerian, Assyrian and Babylonian empires. It was also part of the Median, Achaemenid, Hellenistic, Parthian, Sassanid, Roman, Rashidun, Umayyad, Abbasid, Ayyubid, Seljuk, Mongol, Timurid, Safavid, Afsharid and Ottoman empires.[9]
The country today known as Iraq was a region of the Ottoman Empire until the partition of the Ottoman Empire in the 20th century. It was made up of three provinces, called vilayets in the Ottoman language: Mosul Vilayet, Baghdad Vilayet, and Basra Vilayet. In 1958, the monarchy was overthrown and the Iraqi Republic created. Iraq was controlled by the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party from 1968 until 2003. In 1980, Iraq invaded Iran, sparking a protracted war which would last for almost eight years, and end in a stalemate with devastating losses for both countries.
After an invasion by the United States and its allies in 2003, Saddam Hussein's Ba'ath Party was removed from power, and multi-party parliamentary elections were held in 2005. The US presence in Iraq ended in 2011,[10] but the Iraqi insurgency continued and intensified as fighters from the Syrian Civil War spilled into the country. Out of the insurgency came a highly destructive group calling itself ISIL, which took large parts of the north and west. It has since been largely defeated. Iraq has a coastline measuring 58 km (36 miles) on the northern Persian Gulf and encompasses the Mesopotamian Alluvial Plain, the northwestern end of the Zagros mountain range and the eastern part of the Syrian Desert.[8] Two major rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates, run south through Iraq and into the Shatt al-Arab near the Persian Gulf. These rivers provide Iraq with significant amounts of fertile land. The region between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, historically known as Mesopotamia, is often referred to as the cradle of civilisation. It was here that mankind first began to read, write, create laws and live in cities under an organised government—notably Uruk, from which "Iraq" is derived. The area has been home to successive civilisations since the 6th millennium BC. Iraq was the centre of the Akkadian, Sumerian, Assyrian and Babylonian empires. It was also part of the Median, Achaemenid, Hellenistic, Parthian, Sassanid, Roman, Rashidun, Umayyad, Abbasid, Ayyubid, Seljuk, Mongol, Timurid, Safavid, Afsharid and Ottoman empires.[9]

Baghdad, a city that has risen and fallen countless times over the centuries, is enjoying a period of relative peace. I took the opportunity to walk the streets of a city that I had long wanted to explore.
The capital of Iraq has spent much of the last 20 years in turmoil, but there are few more resilient cities in the world. It has rebuilt itself many times over.
There has been a settlement here on the Tigris for nearly 4000 years. The famous fortified round city from the 8th century developed into the richest city in the world. An epicentre of trade and learning. Then came the sieges of the Persians and the Mongols, and the destruction of Tamerlane, not to mention catastrophic floods and plagues. Ottoman rule from the 15th century then gave way to British rule, followed by the regime of Saddam Hussein, followed by the American invasion which led to sectarian civil war. Thankfully Islamic State were held back, but only just. If ever a city deserved a period of peace its Baghdad. But you won’t find much peace on the roads. Don’t think of renting a car here. Red lights have no meaning and there appear to be no rules.
No target was off-limits during the worst years of the civil unrest. The Mutanabi street book market, long a symbol of intellectual freedom, was blown apart by a car bomb in 2007. 30 people were killed. The wreckage of the car is now an exhibit at the Imperial War Museum in London.

There were no winners in the tragic Iran - Iraq War but Saddam nonetheless erected a victory arch with replicas of his own hands holding two swords. It stands in the Green zone, a heavy guarded city within a city which houses government buildings, embassies and residences of the Baghdad elite. An enduring symbol of the fragile peace in this city.
A monument that I was keen to see was the Martys Monument. Two Giant tear drops commemorating both those killed in the war with Iran and now also the Kurdish and Shia victims of Saddam Hussein. Access is restricted but you can’t help but be moved by the significance of this vast sculpture.
It’s estimated that 15,000 items were stolen. Many have been lost forever, but the work that has been done to reassemble Iraq’s heritage is remarkable. The museum houses so many treasures from sites such as Babylon, Hatta, Nineveh, and Nimrod that the casual observer would never be able to image what had happened here. It may lack a shop, a cafe and the other facilities of its cousins in Paris, London and New York, but make no mistake, this is a world class museum.
Apart from the museum there is little other evidence of the richness of Baghdad’s past. The city is choked with traffic, and sprawls in all directions with little evidence of investment and development when compared say to Erbil in Kurdistan. The international hotel chains are still absent. But some new developments are being marketed so perhaps the cityscape may be very different in ten years time, if the peace can be maintained,but whatever is coming next Baghdad will endure, as it always has.

On 21 March 2003, ITN's John Irvine reported from the Iraqi capital of Baghdad as the "shock and awe" phase of the US-led air campaign got underway. While the US bombardment of Baghdad had begun on 19 March, this had in fact consisted of relatively limited strikes targetting Saddam Hussein, senior regime officials, and other specific targets. At 17:00 UTC on 21 March, the air campaign moved into the next phase. In one night, 504 cruise missiles were launched at Baghdad's government district. The pictures captured by ITN's cameras that night are to this day considered defining images of the 2003 invasion and the Iraq War as a whole.

Baghdad
Baghdad (Arabic: بغداد ,بغداد Kurdish: Bexda, Iraqi pronunciation: [bɐʁˈd̪ɑːd̪]) is the capital of the Republic of Iraq. The population of Baghdad, as of 2011, is approximately 7,216,040, making it the largest city in Iraq, the second largest city in the Arab world (after Cairo, Egypt), and the second largest city in Western Asia (after Tehran, Iran). According to the government, the population of the country has reached 35 million, with 9 million in the capital.
Located along the Tigris River, the city was founded in the 8th century and became the capital of the Abbasid Caliphate. Within a short time of its inception, Baghdad evolved into a significant cultural, commercial, and intellectual center for the Islamic world. This, in addition to housing several key academic institutions (e.g. House of Wisdom), garnered the city a worldwide reputation as the "Center of Learning".
Throughout the High Middle Ages, Baghdad was considered to be the largest city in the world with an estimated population of 1,200,000 people. The city was largely destroyed at the hands of the Mongol Empire in 1258, resulting in a decline that would linger through many centuries due to frequent plagues and multiple successive empires. With the recognition of Iraq as an independent state (formerly the British Mandate of Mesopotamia) in 1938, Baghdad gradually regained some of its former prominence as a significant center of Arab culture.

The story revolves around a big joint family where certain complicated familial ties leave everyone jealous and insecure about their lives due to egos & unsettled conflicts of the past. Wali is a handsome young man who is known for his rude and arrogant behaviour. After learning his lesson early on in his life, Wali values and cares about honour a lot. Rather than seeing things in grey, Wali is accustomed to perceiving things either in black or white. Wali’s cousin and competitor, Daniyal is jealous of Wali’s persona and leaves no opportunity to defame or ridicule him. On the other hand, Anabia is an obedient and disciplined young girl who along with her mother travels to attend the wedding of one of their distant relatives. One unfortunate incident changes the course of Wali, Daniyal and Anabia’s life forever. Daniyal's approach towards Anabia drastically impacts her life and soon Daniyal’s growing aggression begins to bother Wali who develops a soft corner for Anabia. Will Wali find the courage to stand up for Anabia and her rights or will he continue to live with regrets?

This is an Arabic name; the family name is al-Tikriti.
Saddam Hussein Abd al-Majid al-Tikriti (/hʊˈseɪn/;[5] Arabic: صدام حسين عبد المجيد التكريتي Ṣaddām Ḥusayn ʿAbd al-Maǧīd al-Tikrītī;[a] 28 April 1937[b] – 30 December 2006) was President of Iraq from 16 July 1979 until 9 April 2003.[10] A leading member of the revolutionary Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party, and later, the Baghdad-based Ba'ath Party and its regional organization the Iraqi Ba'ath Party—which espoused Ba'athism, a mix of Arab nationalism and socialism—Saddam played a key role in the 1968 coup (later referred to as the 17 July Revolution) that brought the party to power in Iraq.
As vice president under the ailing General Ahmed Hassan al-Bakr, and at a time when many groups were considered capable of overthrowing the government, Saddam created security forces through which he tightly controlled conflicts between the government and the armed forces. In the early 1970s, Saddam nationalized oil and foreign banks leaving the system eventually insolvent mostly due to the Iran–Iraq War, the Gulf War, and UN sanctions.[11] Through the 1970s, Saddam cemented his authority over the apparatus of government as oil money helped Iraq's economy to grow at a rapid pace. Positions of power in the country were mostly filled with Sunni Arabs, a minority that made up only a fifth of the population.[12]
Saddam formally rose to power in 1979, although he had already been the de facto head of Iraq for several years. He suppressed several movements, particularly Shi'a and Kurdish movements which sought to overthrow the government or gain independence, respectively,[13] and maintained power during the Iran–Iraq War and the Gulf War. Whereas some in the Arab world lauded Saddam for opposing the United States and attacking Israel,[14][15] he was widely condemned for the brutality of his dictatorship. The total number of Iraqis killed by the security services of Saddam's government in various purges and genocides is conservatively estimated to be 250,000.[16] Saddam's invasions of Iran and Kuwait also resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths. He acquired the title "Butcher of Baghdad"
In 2003, a coalition led by the United States invaded Iraq to depose Saddam, in which United States President George W. Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair falsely[20] accused him of possessing weapons of mass destruction and having ties to al-Qaeda. Saddam's Ba'ath party was disbanded and elections were held. Following his capture on 13 December 2003, the trial of Saddam took place under the Iraqi Interim Government. On 5 November 2006, Saddam was convicted by an Iraqi court of crimes against humanity related to the 1982 killing of 148 Iraqi Shi'a, and sentenced to death by hanging. He was executed on 30 December 2006

Iraq (/ɪˈræk/, /ɪˈrɑːk/ (About this soundlisten) or /aɪˈræk/; Arabic: اَلْعِرَاق, al-ʿirāq; Kurdish: عێراق Êraq), officially the Republic of Iraq (Arabic: جُمْهُورِيَّة ٱلْعِرَاقِ About this soundJumhūriyyah al-ʿIrāq; Kurdish: کۆماری عێراق Komarî Êraq), is a country in Western Asia, bordered by Turkey to the north, Iran to the east, Kuwait to the southeast, Saudi Arabia to the south, Jordan to the southwest and Syria to the west. The capital, and largest city, is Baghdad. Iraq is home to diverse ethnic groups including Arabs, Kurds, Assyrians, Turkmen, Shabakis, Yazidis, Armenians, Mandeans, Circassians, Sabians and Kawliya.[6] Around 99% of the country's 38 million citizens are Muslims,[7] with tiny minorities of Christians, Yarsans, Yezidis and Mandeans also present. The official languages of Iraq are Arabic and Kurdish.

Iraq has a coastline measuring 58 km (36 miles) on the northern Persian Gulf and encompasses the Mesopotamian Alluvial Plain, the northwestern end of the Zagros mountain range and the eastern part of the Syrian Desert.[8] Two major rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates, run south through Iraq and into the Shatt al-Arab near the Persian Gulf. These rivers provide Iraq with significant amounts of fertile land. The region between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, historically known as Mesopotamia, is often referred to as the cradle of civilisation. It was here that mankind first began to read, write, create laws and live in cities under an organised government—notably Uruk, from which "Iraq" is derived. The area has been home to successive civilisations since the 6th millennium BC. Iraq was the centre of the Akkadian, Sumerian, Assyrian and Babylonian empires. It was also part of the Median, Achaemenid, Hellenistic, Parthian, Sassanid, Roman, Rashidun, Umayyad, Abbasid, Ayyubid, Seljuk, Mongol, Timurid, Safavid, Afsharid and Ottoman empires.[9]
The country today known as Iraq was a region of the Ottoman Empire until the partition of the Ottoman Empire in the 20th century. It was made up of three provinces, called vilayets in the Ottoman language: Mosul Vilayet, Baghdad Vilayet, and Basra Vilayet. In April 1920 the British Mandate of Mesopotamia was created under the authority of the League of Nations. A British-backed monarchy joining these vilayets into one Kingdom was established in 1921 under Faisal I of Iraq. The Hashemite Kingdom of Iraq gained independence from the UK in 1932. In 1958, the monarchy was overthrown and the Iraqi Republic created. Iraq was controlled by the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party from 1968 until 2003. In 1980, Iraq invaded Iran, sparking a protracted war which would last for almost eight years, and end in a stalemate with devastating losses for both countries.
After an invasion by the United States and its allies in 2003, Saddam Hussein's Ba'ath Party was removed from power, and multi-party parliamentary elections were held in 2005. The US presence in Iraq ended in 2011,[10] but the Iraqi insurgency continued and intensified as fighters from the Syrian Civil War spilled into the country. Out of the insurgency came a highly destructive group calling itself ISIL, which took large parts of the north and west. It has since been largely defeated.
