Astrakhan Airlines was an airline based in Astrakhan, Russia. It operated scheduled and chartered, domestic and international passenger and cargo flights out of Narimanovo Airport, Astrakhan.
History
Astrakhan Airlines was established in 1994 and was owned by the Board of Directors (65%), the local Concrete Structures Plant (a Gazprom subsidiary) (25%) and employees and investors (10%). In 2005, the airline was shut down.
Services
Upon closure, Astrakhan Airlines operated scheduled flights to the following destinations:
The oldest economic and cultural center of the Lower Volga, it is often called the southernmost outpost of Russia and the Caspian capital. The city is a member of the Eurasian Regional Office of the World Organization "United Cities and Local Governments" Its population is diverse and includes one hundred ethnicities and fourteen religious denominations.
The city is located in the upper part of the Volga delta, on eleven islands of the Caspian Depression. The distance to Moscow by road is 1,411 kilometers (877mi).
History
Medieval history
Astrakhan is situated in the Volga Delta, which is rich in sturgeon and exotic plants. The fertile area formerly contained the capitals of Khazaria and the Golden Horde. Astrakhan itself was first mentioned by travelers in the early 13th century as Xacitarxan. Tamerlane burnt it to the ground in 1395. From 1459 to 1556, Xacitarxan was the capital of Astrakhan Khanate. The ruins of this medieval settlement were found by archaeologists 12km upstream from the modern-day city.
Karakul or Qaraqul (named after Qorako‘l, a city in Bukhara Province in Uzbekistan) is a breed of domestic sheep which originated in Central Asia. Some archaeological evidence points to Karakul sheep being raised there continuously since 1400 BC.
Hailing from the desert regions of Central Asia, Karakul sheep are renowned for their ability to forage and thrive under extremely harsh living conditions. They can survive severe drought conditions because of a special quality they have, storing fat in their tails. Karakul are also raised in large numbers in Namibia, having first been brought there by German colonists in the early 20th century.
Use by humans
Karakul sheep are a multi-purpose breed, kept for milking, meat, pelts, and wool. As a fat-tailed breed, they have a distinctive meat. Many adult Karakul are double-coated; in this case, people separate the coarse guard hair from the undercoat. Karakul is relatively coarse fiber used for outer garment, carpets and for felting.
The Canadian military fur wedge cap, "envelope busby", or Astrakhan busby is a uniform hat worn by the Canadian military and RCMP. The outside of the cap is entirely covered in real (e.g. seal skin or Persian lamb) or synthetic fur and is shaped like a wedge. When not being worn the cap folds flat. The cap is about 8 inches (200mm) high but is normally worn with the apex of the wedge shape depressed back into the interior of the cap to form a longitudinal trough at the crown, reducing the overall height. Often the cap is patterned such that the front of the crown will be slightly higher than the back. On one side of the military style fur wedge cap hangs a flat flap made of cloth or wool that extends from the crown to the bottom of the cap, known as the 'bag'. The colour of the 'bag' was determined by the regimental colours (e.g. the RCMP bag was yellow). The bag is very similar to that worn with the busby. Because of the cap's passing resemblance to the hussar busby author and researcher James J. Boulton dubbed it the envelope busby. Still, whatever influence the busby may have had on its design, the fur wedge cap pattern was "distinctly Canadian"

Exploring the World's CAPITAL of CAVIAR! (Astrakhan, Russia) 🇷🇺
We headed up the Russian Caspian Sea coast from Dagestan to the imperial city Astrakhan. Astrakhan, at the confluence of the Volga river and Caspian is known throughout Russia for its fish. It is widely-regarded as the home of Caviar. We spent two days (including Julia's birthday) in this beautiful city, exploring the famous 'Kremlin', tasting the incredible fish and taking some time to relax after an intense journey across the North Caucasus.
Hope you enjoy the relaxed vibe of this beautiful city! We can't wait to return in the summer too!

How do people live in Astrakhan, Russia?

Astrakhan, the Jewel of the Lower Volga, was once a thriving merchant city – a history that has been preserved in the old mansions and trading houses of merchants from Persia, Armenia and India. With its position along the Volga River and just north of the Caspian Sea, Astrakhan has always been valued for its strategic military and economic position. Both cities prospered thanks to their location on the Silk Route and by the sea.
The region is a part of the Southern Federal District and is a border region: by land, it borders on Kazakhstan, and on Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan by sea.
Astrakhan is famous for its cultural traditions, dating back to the remote past. Representatives of over 140 nations and nationalities live here. All world religions have found here their adherents. A native, poet Velimir Khlebnikov called Astrakhan the triangle of Christ, Mohammed and Buddha.

2. Since ancient times, the steppes of the Lower Volga region and the Northern Caspian Sea have served as a gateway for nomads breaking through from the East to Europe. Magnificent rangelands, abundance of water, winters with little snow have always attracted nomadic pastoralists here, who settled in these places and, under certain historical conditions, began to conduct an integrated cattle-breeding and agricultural economy here. Atrakhan is thought to have been founded in the second half of the 13th century as part of the Golden Horde. Being located near the mouth of the River Volga, it quickly became an important city for trade and in the mid-15th century it became the capital of the Astrakhan Khanate, a successor state to the Golden Horde. It became part of Russia under Ivan the Terrible who was reponsible for founding the city’s most famous sight – the Astrakhan Kremlin.

ABOUT ME:
Hi! My name is Elena. I’m currently living in Russia but I can’t imagine my life without travel. I visit off the beaten track destinations (in Russia and beyond) to explore different cultures and ways of living, connect to the wisdom of nature, and learn about myself. Let’s go on this adventure together ♥

Exploring the World's CAPITAL of CAVIAR! (Astrakhan, Russia) 🇷🇺
Astrakhan is city in Southern Russia. It's a popular tourist destination, but how people live there is pretty awful.
Astrakhan is the second most populous city in Russia, with around 1.7 million residents. It's located in the Southern Federal District on the Caspian Sea. Here, we explore the real face of Russia: ugly poverty, lack of hygiene, homes without basic utilities, and terrible living conditions for the average person.
If you're planning a trip to Russia, be sure to check out Astrakhan! Astrakhan is a beautiful city with a rich history, and it's a great place to visit if you're looking for a real glimpse into Russian life.
However, be sure to remember that the real face of Russia is much different from what you'll see in Astrakhan. Russia is an enormous country with a rich culture, but the reality is that many people living there are struggling to survive. Watch this video to find out more about the real Russia, and decide whether or not you want to visit it!
P.S. While I was making the video, the tram in Astrakhan ceased to exist. At all...
Astrakhan, the Jewel of the Lower Volga, was once a thriving merchant city – a history that has been preserved in the old mansions and trading houses of merchants from Persia, Armenia and India. There’s also the city’s beautiful Kremlin and the Volga Delta – where the Volga River flows into the Caspian Sea and lotus flowers bloom.
With its position along the Volga River and just north of the Caspian Sea, Astrakhan has always been valued for its strategic military and economic position. The modern Russian city dates from 1558, after Ivan the Terrible defeated the local Tatar khanate. Historically, though, Astrakhan is the successor of two imperial capitals in the area that date back much further. These include Saray of the Golden Horde, from the 13th and 14th centuries, and Itil (sometimes called Atil), of the earlier Khazar kaganate, which adopted Judaism as its official religion and goes back to the 8th to 10th centuries.
Our bus city tour with the visit of Kremlin grounds will help you learn more about this remarkable city.

Astrakhan sits at the bottom end of the mighty Volga river, just before it empties out into the Caspian Sea. Famous for its abundance of Caviar, both black and red, Astrakhan has been land & se trade route for centuries. Join Luc as he shows you the sights, including the Astrakhan Kremlin, the Volga embankment and a fish market. And a pub.

This is where the Volga ends and the Caspian sea begins. It's where ancient nomads passed through on their way to Europe. This is Astrakhan Oblast.

More information about the video content bellow:
1. Astrakhan Oblast is a federal subject of Russia (an oblast) located in southern Russia.
3. Astrakhan is a city in southern Russia and the administrative center of Astrakhan Oblast. The oldest economic and cultural center of the Lower Volga, it is often called the southernmost outpost of Russia and the Caspian capital. Its population is diverse and includes one hundred ethnicities and fourteen religious denominations.
4. Astrakhan region is the homeland of the Buzhans, one of several Slavic tribes from which modern Russians evolved. They lived in Southern Russia and inhabited the area around the Buzan river.
5. From October 8, 1980 to October 27, 1984, and under the leadership of Nikolai Baibakov, the USSR held fifteen deep underground nuclear tests for Nuclear Explosions for the National Economy at the site Vega in the Ryn Desert.
6. The Caspian Sea is the largest lake in the world, named for its large size as the sea. The Astrakhan region is washed by the northern part of the Caspian Sea. The Volga Delta is the largest river delta in Europe, and occurs where Europe's largest river system, the Volga River, drains into the Caspian Sea in Russia's Astrakhan Oblast.
7. Astrakhan sits on the boundary of the marshy Volga delta, where the Volga River meets the Caspian Sea. It's location on the delta makes it easy to take a boat trip to one of the neighboring countries. Indeed, if you're headed to a destination on the Caspian from Astrakhan, it's probably not to anywhere within the borders of Russia, but rather to Baku, Azerbaijan or something along the long Caspian coastline of Iran.
