Aktau (Kazakh:Ақтау, Qazaq Latin Script: Aqtaw - White Mountain) was known as Shevchenko (Russian:Шевченко) from 1964 to 1991. Its current name means "white mountain" in Kazakh, which may be due to its cliffs that overlook the Caspian. Its former name was given due to the eponymous Ukrainian poet's period of exile in the area. It is the second largest city in western Kazakhstan and the country's main seaport on the Caspian Sea. It is located on the Mangyshlak Peninsula and is the capital of Mangystau Region. Population: 166,962 (2009 Census results);143,396 (1999 Census results).
Aktau is known for its unique blockaddress system. Almost all streets inside the city have no names, and addresses in Aktau generally consist of three numbers: the district number (also known as micro-region/micro-district/block), the building number, and the apartment number. This is because Aktau was originally planned as a camp for the workers of the oil industry.
History
The territory of what now is Aktau was once inhabited by ancient tribes of Scythians. Archeological finds in the area include old settlements and utensils. The current territory of Mangystau hosted a spur route of the northern silk road, which resulted in the founding of several Sufi shrines in Aktau's vicinity. However, the area had very little population prior to Soviet times and no cities of any relevancy, almost certainly due to the scarcity of fresh water.
STRANDED IN THE KAZAKH DESERT... (no way out of Aktau)
Well, we are completely stuck in Aktau, Kazakhstan. After crossing the Caspian Sea from Azerbaijan to Aktau by boat, our plan was to head straight across the country by train, bus, car, however we could really. But, there since arriving here, we've basically found out, unless you booked transport 2 months ago, there is NO WAY OUT! So, to cut a long story short, we are stranded in the desert of south western Kazakhstan with literally no options to escape..

We finally hit a roadblock on our trip travelling across land, as unfortunately Azerbaijan still has its borders closed following on from the pandemic.
However, we were able to catch a quick one hour flight to the other side of the Caspian sea to Kazakhstan.

After a long walk, we stumbled upon the rock trail, a fairly new boardwalk spanning the coastline of Aktau. To say we were suprised was an understatement, this boardwalk is honestly one of the most beautiful we've seen and is 100% worth the long walk!
We also managed to fit in a quick dip in the (very cold!) Caspian sea before we headed off to our next destination.
We only had a short stay in Aktau as we plan to travel the length of Kazakhstan from west to east coast (visiting Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and hopefully Tajikistan along the way). This means lots of trains, our first of which being an overnight sleeper train from Aktau to Beyneu.

I hope this video helps out other travelers as I couldn't find much information on it. Please leave comments about your trip and what you would/wouldn't do the next time around so we can help each other out!
We finally hit a roadblock on our trip travelling across land, as unfortunately Azerbaijan still has its borders closed following on from the pandemic.
However, we were able to catch a quick one hour flight to the other side of the Caspian sea to Kazakhstan.
Kazakhstan is a place not many people (us included) know much about, so we're excited to begin exploring this vast country.
Our first destination in Kazakhstan is Aktau. The city of Aktau is spread out into many micro-districts, so we decided to walk to the busiest looking district near us.
