Artist: Al Martino / Song: Mary In the Morning
Al Martino performs "Mary In the Morning" with Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.
LYRICS
Nothing's quite as pretty as Mary in the morning
When through a sleepy haze I see her lying there
Soft as the rain that falls on summer flowers
Warm as the sunlight shining on her golden hair
When I awake and see her there so close beside me
I want to take her in my arms, the ache is there so deep inside me
And nothing's quite as pretty as Mary in the morning
Chasing a rainbow in her dreams so far away
And when she turns to touch me, I kiss her face so softly
Then my Mary wakes to love another day
And Mary's there in sunny days or stormy weather
She doesn't care 'cause right or wrong the love we share, we share together
And nothing's quite as pretty as Mary in ...

Tony Bennett - Fly Me To The Moon (In Other Words)
TONY BENNETT
LYRICS:
Poets often use many words
To say a simple thing
It takes thought and time and rhyme
To make a poem sing
With music and words I've been playing
For you I've written a song
To make sure you know what I'm saying
I'll translate as I go along
Fly me to the moon
And let me play among the stars
Let me see what spring is like
On Jupiter and Mars
In other words
Hold my hand
In other words
Darlin kiss me
Fill my heart with song
And let me sing forevermore
You are all I long for
All I worship and adore
In other words
Please be true
In other words
I love you...

LYRICS:
Poets often use many words
To say a simple thing
It takes thought and time and rhyme
To make a poem sing
With music and words I've been playing
For you I've written a song
To make sure you know what I'm saying
I'll translate as I go along
Fly me to the moon
And let me play among the stars
Let me see what spring is like
On Jupiter and Mars
In other words
Hold my hand
In other words
Darlin kiss me
Fill my heart with song
And let me sing forevermore
You are all I long for
All I worship and adore
In other words
Please be true
In other words
I love you...

LSE Events | Cultural Studies and the Challenge of Inequality Today
Recorded on 18th April 2018
This event will consider the prospects for contemporary thinking within the cultural studies tradition to engage with current inequalities.
Mindful of the historical importance of this tradition, dating back to the 1960s and including work by Richard Hoggart, Raymond Williams, Stuart Hall, feminist cultural theory, and Bourdieu, the panel will both take stock of these older perspectives and offer their thoughts on contemporary prospects.

Analyze This/Best scene/Robert De Niro/Paul Vitti/Billy Crystal/Chazz Palminteri/Joe Viterelli
Mob boss Paul Vitti and his consigliere Dominic are discussing an upcoming meeting and the Mafia's present-day problems. Just as Dominic warns Vitti to look out for Primo Sindone (an up-and-coming mafioso who wants to be capo di tutti capi), gunmen drive past and kill Dominic. Vitti only barely survives.
Psychiatrist Ben Sobel is dealing with his own problems: his son from his first marriage listens to his sessions, his patients are not challenging enough, and his wedding to Laura MacNamara is coming soon. Sobel rear-ends a car belonging to Vitti and the trunk opens, revealing a man bound and gagged inside, which Sobel and his son do not notice. Jelly, one of Vitti's men, takes the blame, but Sobel gives Jelly his business card in case he changes his mind about compensation.

Skate Myth Busting Shredding Stereotypes with Sociology
Dr Indigo Willing
Griffith University
TASA Thursdays Webinar: 15 February 2024
Skateboarding is rapidly transforming, both as a subculture and now a high-performance sport that includes being in the Olympics. Notably, there is an increase in the participation of women and non-binary skaters. Accompanying these transformations is also a rise in skaters from various backgrounds who promote and push for social change.
This session aims to present a fun, express-lane exploration of stereotypes in skating and research papers by the presenter that one by one 'shred' them by highlighting key figures, approaches, and initiatives for change. The presentation concludes by introducing a new project 'Skate, Create, Educate and Re-generate' that explores where skating and creative sports are heading...

Talk | Peggy Levitt | Artefacts and Allegiances: How Museums Put the Nation and the World on Display
Sociologist Peggy Levitt considers how museums help foster culturally diverse societies with a sense of responsibility towards communities beyond their own. Levitt researched museums in Europe, the United States, Asia, and the Middle East. She conducted interviews with museum directors, curators, and policymakers about the paintings, objects, and benefactors that define their collections. In this talk, Levitt argues that museums must play a more active role in addressing social injustice and inequality.

Step 13: The Panopticon
After discussing the social contract and the balance of "Freedom From/Freedom To" Ryder looks at another form of social power dynamics that stem from ideological prison design, grow into institutional and workplace behavior modification, and eventually spread to the public internalizing self discipline and punishment, and participating not only in surveilling other citizens, but directing their gaze and attention to re-affirm and verify the authority of the state. This episode introduces Jeremy Benthem's prison design, a limited version of Michel Foucault's ideas from both Discipline & Punish and Power/Knowledge texts, as well as a brief extrapolation of Tony Bennett's "exhibitionary control."

Angela McRobbie is Professor of Communications at Goldsmiths University of London. She has recently elected Fellow of the British Academy. Her early work was carried out at Birmingham Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies and her most recent books include: The Aftermath of Feminism 2008, Be Creative 2015. She is currently completing Feminism, Neoliberalism and Popular Culture (Polity 2019).

Tony Bennett is Research Professor in Social and Cultural Theory in the Institute for Culture and Society at Western Sydney University.

During a meeting, Vitti suffers a panic attack and tells Jelly that he needs to see a psychiatrist, but it has to be kept a secret. Jelly recommends Sobel. Vitti visits Sobel, claiming his friend needs therapy, but Sobel sees through the ruse and realizes Vitti is talking about himself, impressing Vitti enough to want to see him whenever necessary, to Sobel's chagrin. Sobel goes to Miami for his wedding and Vitti, Jelly, and the crew follow. Vitti explains he has been suffering from erectile dysfunction and Sobel suggests the source of the problem might be stress.
The next day Vitti has another panic attack and requests to see Sobel. Vitti explains his history with his father to Sobel, who thinks this might have something to do with Vitti's problems. The wedding is interrupted when an assassin is killed by one of Vitti's men. Sobel confronts Vitti and argues with him until he becomes angry. Sobel suggests he resolve his anger by calling Sindone and telling him how he feels. Vitti phones Sindone and starts by telling him how he feels but ends up threatening to kill him.
Sobel and his family return to New York, where they find a fountain in their garden, a gift from Vitti. The FBI arrive and request Sobel inform on Vitti, but he refuses despite the FBI's threats. He changes his mind when the FBI play a tape in which Vitti reveals his intention to kill Sobel after the meeting (which the FBI had altered; Vitti was actually saying he would kill anyone who harmed Sobel). At his next meeting with Vitti, Sobel wears a wire, but throws it away when he learns that, as a child, Vitti saw his father murdered. Vitti, informed that Sobel was working with the FBI, takes him to a secluded place to kill him. Sobel and Vitti get into an argument, and Vitti breaks down as he admits that he blames himself for his father's death. Just then, two hitmen arrive to kill Vitti, but Jelly kills them both. Vitti apologizes for planning to kill Sobel, and the two reconcile.
The day of the meeting arrives, but Vitti has another panic attack. Jelly interrupts Sobel's wedding, requesting Sobel attend the meeting as Vitti's consigliere. Sobel is initially nervous, but his self-confidence grows to the point that he begins to patronize Primo until Primo finally pulls a gun. Vitti arrives, orders Primo to stand down, and announces he knows a traitor in his own family killed Dominic, but will not seek revenge and instead retire from the Mafia. Outside, a standoff ensues between Vitti's and Primo's men, during which Sobel takes a bullet intended for Vitti. The FBI intervenes, the mobsters are arrested, and Sobel is taken to the hospital.
Sobel visits Vitti in prison and Vitti thanks Sobel for his help before informing him that Sindone is dead. At home, Sobel dances with his new wife as Tony Bennett serenades them.

The presentation concludes by introducing a new project 'Skate, Create, Educate and Re-generate' that explores where skating and creative sports are heading now, and how sociologists can become involved in leading these conversations.

The Will to DIY has a list of links and commentary: https://thewilltodiy.com/step-13-the-panopticon/
Many thanks to Mistah Lisa and Jonathan Whitfill.
1:40 Benthem: Guarding prisoners with "visible, but unverifiable power"
4:11 Foucault: Our escaped prisoner walks into a real bar, and gets committed to an asylum.
6:56 The manager's "surveillance discourse" instills "normative behavior"
9:00 The Reflective Intelligence Meter: measure your intelligence now!
11:42 Our escaped prisoner escapes the asylum, and is declared a "genius" in the art world for pointing his eyeballs.
