The 1st Infantry Division, Philippine Army, known officially as the Tabak Division, is the Philippine Army's primary Infantry unit, and specializes in anti-guerrilla warfare. The division has been involved on combating terrorists in Southern Mindanao.
History
The establishment of the 1st Regular Division, Philippine Army also known as Tabak Division was on 5 May 1936 to 9 April 1942 and stationed at Camp Murphy (now Camp Aguinaldo) in Quezon City, Rizal (now Metro Manila). The unit engaged in military operations in Bataan from 1 January – 9 April 1942 supporting the USAFFE military forces led by General Douglas MacArthur against the Imperial Japanese troops led by General Masaharu Homma during the Battle of Bataan in 1942.
When the Battle of Bataan began in January 1942, the local troops of the PA 1st Regular Division led by Brigadier General Mateo C. Capinpin (1938-1941) and Brigadier General Fidel J. Segundo (1941-1942) was sent to Bataan to augment the USAFFE forces against the Japanese. The battle lasted until April 1942. Before the fall of Bataan, Filipino troops and officers of the 1st Regular Division fought side by side with the USAFFE in Bataan, attacking Japanese troops along the Layac Line, Porac-Guagua Line, Abucay-Mauban Line, Battle of Trail 2, the Battle of the Pockets and the Battle of the Points before the invasion at Mount Samat on 3 April 1942. After the Battle of Bataan on 9 April 1942, the local forces under the PCA 1st Regular Division surrendered to the Japanese Imperial troops. The now infamous Death March commenced the following day with more than 78,000 Filipino and American POWs from Mariveles, Bataan to SAn Fernando, Pampanga and by train to Camp O'Donnell in Capas, Tarlac.
The Slovak 1st Infantry Division was an infantry unit in the Slovak Army during World War II.
In Jozef Tiso's Axis Slovak state, it took part in the German invasion of Poland in 1939. Later, four divisions fought alongside the German Army on the Eastern Front: the 1st Infantry Division, the 2nd Infantry Division, the Slovak Fast Division, and the Slovak Security Division. The 1st Infantry Division started out as the 1st Division, which was part of a Slovak expeditionary force on the Eastern Front that began seeing action in June 1941, when the World War II Slovak Republic joined Nazi Germany in its invasion of the Soviet Union. The 1st Division, along with the 2nd Division, was under GeneralFerdinand Čatloš. Meanwhile, the Slovak Fast Division began seeing fierce action on the Eastern Front. It took part in Fall Blau of 1942 and the attack into the Caucasus Mountains. In 1943 the Fast Division was reconstructed and the 1st Infantry Division was formed from the Fast Division in August of that year. However, the 1st Infantry Division saw very little action and was used for rear area duties until it was disbanded in July 1944 to form construction units.
The Philippines (i/ˈfɪlᵻpiːnz/; Filipino:Pilipinas[ˌpɪlɪˈpinɐs]), officially known as the Republic of the Philippines (Filipino:Republika ng Pilipinas), is a sovereignisland country in Southeast Asia situated in the western Pacific Ocean. It consists of about 7,500 islands that are categorized broadly under three main geographical divisions: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The capital city of the Philippines is Manila and the most populous city is Quezon City; both are part of Metro Manila.
To the north of the Philippines across the Luzon Strait lies Taiwan; Vietnam sits west across the South China Sea; southwest lies Malaysia in the island of Borneo across the Sulu Sea, and to the south the Celebes Sea separates it from other islands of Indonesia; while to the east it is bounded by the Philippine Sea and the island-nation of Palau. Its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire and close to the equator makes the Philippines prone to earthquakes and typhoons, but also endows it with abundant natural resources and some of the world's greatest biodiversity. At approximately 300,000 square kilometers (115,831sqmi), the Philippines is the 72nd-largest country in the world.
January 7 – A landslide happened in Compostela Valley, where more than 30 people are reportedly dead, and 50 still missing.
January 15 – the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) declared the Independence of Bangsamoro Land (Sulu, Mindanao, Palawan, Sabah) in Valencia Bukidnon.
The Philippines 2000 platform largely hinged on five major areas:
Peace and Stability
Economic Growth and Sustainable Development
Energy and Power Generation
Environmental Protection
Streamlined Bureaucracy
The Philippines 2000 program formed the core of the Ramos campaign platform in the 1992 elections which largely centered on economic reforms and improved national security and unity.
Effects and legacy
The Philippines 2000 platform was widely successful, making it one of the greatest legacies of the Ramos administration to the Philippines. Ramos was successfully able to open the then-closed Philippine economy and break Marcos-era formed monopolies, especially with regard to Philippine Airlines and the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company, which were privatized and de-monopolized during his tenure. He was also able to resolve the power crisis in the Philippines through privatization of power plants and the construction of new ones. The reforms spurred additional investment into the Philippines.

The now infamous Death March commenced the following day with more than 78,000 Filipino and American POWs from Mariveles, Bataan to SAn Fernando, Pampanga and by train to Camp O'Donnell in Capas, Tarlac.
