SS Division "NORD". Memoirs Of A German Veteran. The Eastern Front in the Snows of Finland.
He served as a mountain jaeger in the Reconnaissance Battalion of the SS Division "Nord". Before the Soviet Union was invaded in June 1941, the SS Division "Nord" was sent to Finland, with the aim of invading the Soviet Union by operating in the Karelian direction, under the command of the 36th Army Corps (Wehrmacht). When Finland declared war upon the Soviet Union on June 25, 1941, that group was unable to break through the Red Army positions and was forced back. Moreover, they suffered serious losses.

German Waffen-SS Soldiers on the Western Front | 4K Colored Combat Footage (Remastered)
The Waffen-SS was the combat branch of the Nazi Party's SS organisation. Its formations included men from Nazi Germany, along with volunteers and conscripts from both occupied and unoccupied lands.
The Waffen-SS grew from three regiments to over 38 divisions during World War II, and served alongside the German Army, Ordnungspolizei and other security units. Originally, it was under the control of the SS Führungshauptamt beneath Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler, the head of the SS. With the start of World War II, tactical control was exercised by the High Command of the Armed Forces (Oberkommando der Wehrmacht, OKW), with some units being subordinated to Kommandostab Reichsführer-SS (Command Staff Reichsführer-SS) directly under Himmler's control.

Can we use these skis for German WWII Reenacting? [4K]
Today we are going out on another small adventure. We recently acquired some old ex- Norwegian military skies, commonly referred to as “Nato planks” by the soldiers, and we wanted to test them out to see if they were usable for re-enactment, especially together with our Norwegian volunteer impression. They are pretty much the same thing as the original, and can easily be modified to look the part even more – but at least we don't have to be worried about using them in the field. Even though the temperature was around -15 degrees Celsius, it proved to be way too warm with the fur lined kharkov parka – so we went old-school, just like they did back then. The skiing conditions were horrible to say the least - the snow was covered in a thick layer of ice, witch made skiing very difficult and ...

Operation Barbarossa: German Invasion of Russia | Part One
'Brutal Reality of Eastern Front Exposed by Lost German Diaries'
On 22 June 1941, Hitler's Germany launched ‘Operation Barbarossa’, the attack of the Soviet Union, the largest invasion in military history. In June 2019, twelve dusty notebooks and a wealth of loose paperwork were discovered in Germany; the diaries of Oberleutnant Wilhelm Sander, a young officer in the 11th Panzer-Regiment who took part in the enormous campaign. On every single day Sander, in a brutally honest manner, elaborately recorded his experiences, impressions and the events he witnessed.
Now transcribed and translated for the first time, they offer a brutally honest, intimate and fascinating view into the murderous and unforgiving nature of war on the Eastern Front from the summer of 1941 to the eventual German re...

Today we will get acquainted with the memoirs of a German gunner. He fought in the Panzer Division "Feldherrnhalle", but not in a tank, but was the commander of a self-propelled artillery battalion. He was a typical German officer of the time. The Polish, French and Yugoslav campaigns passed. He also participated in the invasion of the Soviet Union. Let's start with his childhood. Let's try to understand what influenced his views at a very early age. We will also get acquainted with the training stage of an ordinary German officer.

We saw the first 20 seconds of this 1944 clip at the beginning of a video which covers Armored Train Nr. 3. This time we’ll let it run through because it shows an operation against partisans in the Italian Alps which fits in nicely with the next article in the Die Wehrmacht Ausgabe A Nr. 1 from 1944 that we’ll continue with today.
In this presentation I’ll show rare private footage taken by a band of Yugoslav partisans and I’ll add material from an extremely valuable collection of original periodicals from 1942 that were produced for the SD, SS and German police.
This article begins explaining that in this war it has often been noted that the young soldiers were fighting in the same regions that their fathers had fought. These Austrian mo...

On the orders of Major General Hubert Lanz, commander of the 1st Mountain Division, a group of mountain troops under Captain Gämmerle climbed the West Peak despite bad weather conditions and raised the imperial war flag there, which, however, did not withstand the prevailing snowstorm for long. When the weather improved, a second ascent by an eight-man group led by Lieutenant Leupold took place on 23 August. Originally Major General Lanz had planned to rename the mountain "Adolf-Hitler-Spitze" after the successful conquest by the mountain troops. The news of the ascent of Elbrus, however, is said to have provoked an outburst of rage in Hitler; according to Albert Speer's memoirs, he complained about the "idiotic ambition to climb an idiotic summit" instead of concentrating all his forces on the conquest of Sochumi on the Black Sea. After this negative reaction, the name was not changed. The climbing of the highest peak in the Caucasus was nevertheless exploited propagandistically. The scenes were only filmed afterwards, as the shots from the first ascent had been found unusable. The re-recording took place on 7 September in the presence of the mountaineer and cameraman Hans Ertl. On 27 September 1942 there was a high mountain battle on Elbrus between German and Soviet mountain troops. The Elbrushütte remained under German occupation until the beginning of January 1943. Legends arose on the Soviet side about its recapture, among other things about a successful bombing - but in fact only the fuel depot below the hut was hit. Due to bad weather conditions, the Red Army was initially unable to remove the Reichskriegsflagge from the summit of Elbrus after the Wehrmacht withdrew; a Soviet mountain infantry unit only succeeded in doing so in February.

I don't think anybody would want to go on patrol in these conditions – they would hear you coming from a mile away. We put the skies through a 7 hour long skiing trip and we were actually quite happy with how they performed.

Now transcribed and translated for the first time, they offer a brutally honest, intimate and fascinating view into the murderous and unforgiving nature of war on the Eastern Front from the summer of 1941 to the eventual German retreat in the terrible winter of 1941/1942, while offering a unique glimpse into the world of thought of a highly politicised officer of the German Wehrmacht and member of the NSDAP.
Follow the path of Leutnant Friedrich Sander, a Panzer officer in the German Wehrmacht during Operation Barbarossa, the attack on the Soviet Union.
In the first part of a two-part film, we follow Leutnant Sander on the strenuous, and costly race towards Leningrad and learn about the murderous and terrifying goals of the German campaign in the east.

These Austrian mountain troopers not only found the original bunkers but they also found the remains of things that they had left behind. In some instances the positions simply needed to be tidied up.
These mountain troopers were part of the 24th Mountain Division which was made up primarily of Yugoslav Volksdeutsche which were ethnic Germans and South Tyrolians. This footage from Jan. 12, 1944 is of Serbian volunteers that are seen here being trained to take part in anti partisan operations.
The 24th was primarily involved in fighting partisans in the Karst Plateau on the frontiers of Yugoslavia, Austria and in Italy as we saw in the operation in the first clip. The unit got its name from this region.
Let’s now take a look at the other side of the coin with some rare footage taken by a band of Yugoslav partisans. We see supplies in canisters that have been parachuted by Royal Air Force Halifax bombers to the band. That’s a nice view of one of the canisters.
The communist star worn by this partisan means that the footage comes most likely from 1943 or later. That’s when the British began sending a majority of the supplies to the communist band, lead by Tito, because they had proven to be a more effective fighting force.
At the end of this video I’ll show more footage from that band of partisans. If you are already a Patreon Channel Member then you can now see footage of another German anti partisan operation that can’t be shown here.
Back to the Die Wehrmacht periodical, we see one of the original WW1 positions. Behind the first lines of defense are stone walled living quarters, stalls, and cisterns for storing water that have all remained in good condition. It’s been almost 30 years since the last Austrian soldier manned this observation post on hill 1405. Here we see a mountain trooper gazing into the fog watching for any kind of suspicious movement.
This clip is from a Gebirgsjäger, or Mountain Troop training film. Shaking the reign signals the mule to continue forwards. Also when going downhill the long lead rope should be used to guide.
The company approaches the dangerous area. A lookout is is assigned to watch. The company passes by the danger as quickly as possible.
ROCKS! When the word rocks is called out everyone immediately takes cover.
While in London I was also able to get my hands on collections of complete years for the periodical Die Deutsche Polizei. This is special edition Nr. 19 from October 1 of 1942 which focuses the battle against partisans.
The official periodical was authorized and edited by the Reichsführer SS Heinrich Himmler. The intended readership were policemen of all branches during the Third Reich.
The following photos shows the steps taken during a so-called police action against partisans in the Oberkrain, a region in eastern Slovenia.
1. Police tanks are moved to the staging area.
2. Enemy positions situated in the rocks behind the days objective are softened up by heavy barrage.
3. Advancing quickly towards the enemy, the forested area is carefully combed through.
4. A well camouflaged MG position wait for the oder to open fire.
5. The order to fire is given and the MG opens up.
6. What’s left of the band of partisans make a hasty retreat. Elements of the police unit remain in hot pursuit.
This is more of the Partisan footage. The complete reel has a runtime of 10.42. Here we see a British advisor that have been parachuted in.
Please if you like the way I combine primary source historical materials to create these videos subscribe to this channel and like the video, that really helps.
And if you’d like to get access to more footage that can’t be shown here please consider becoming a Patreon channel member. You won’t be disappointed, I promise.
Thanks for watching.
