A series of bomb blasts in Manila killed at least a dozen people on Saturday.
Police and radio reports also said scores were injured when the bombs ripped apart a bus, a train coach, and hit an airport, a park and a hotel.
At least nine of the dead were aboard the train.
The Manila light railways system trains are usually crowded and even more so during the New Year's holidays.
A bomb expert was killed when a bomb exploded at a hotel as he was trying to defuse it.
The attacks came a day after all Manila area police were put on alert, suspecting Christmas holiday bomb attacks by Muslim extremists of the separatist Abu Sayyaf group.
The bomb on the light railway transport train ripped apart the front coach as it pulled into Manila's Blumentritt Station at noon, killing at least nine and injuring more than 40.
Another bomb exploded in a bus inside the main terminal in a commercial district of Quezon city, in the greater Manila area.
ABS-CBN Television reported at least one dead and severe damage to the terminal.
A third bomb exploded near a large aviation fuel depot at Manila's Ninoy Aquino International Airport.
At least three were injured, said an airport official, but the fuel depot did not explode.
A fourth bomb exploded on a bench in a park near the U-S embassy, injuring at least nine and blasting a half-metre (two-foot) crater in the park and damaging buildings some 200 metres (600 feet) from the embassy.
The bomb was not apparently directed at the embassy.
Police later found a fifth bomb at the upscale Dusit hotel and tried to defuse it, but it exploded as they worked, killing one bomb expert.
On Thursday police in Manila arrested an Abu Sayyaf spokesman, Hector Janjalani, claiming he had several grenades and sketches of potential targets in Manila.
Janjalani is the younger brother of Abu Sayyaf chieftain Khadaffy Janjalani.

This is the music video of the National Anthem of the Philippines, "Lupang Hinirang", wherein then-President Fidel Valdez Ramos made the opening as means of leading the nation towards the celebration of the Centenary of Philippine Independence in 1998 and to promote his platform "Philippines 2000". This was shown on ABS-CBN channel 2 during its daily sign-on transmission.
May-ari ng video/Video courtesy of: Jojo Bailon (View on the 3rd - Jojo Bailon; Facebook) & ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation (ABS-CBN Corporation), 1998.
