Be it what it would, a jetpack would suit you nicely!

    — The Steampunker

Wings are Hardmode (with the exception of Fledgling Wings) accessories that can allow the player to fly temporarily by pressing and holding the Jump key. Flight time is reset when the player rests on solid objects, including both standing on blocks and using climbing items like Ropes, Hooks, Shoe Spikes, Climbing Claws, and Tiger Climbing Gear/Master Ninja Gear. Certain wings also allow the player to hover at fixed heights by holding the ▼ Down key during flight, and/or accelerate their ascent speed by holding the ▲ Up key.

After flight time has been exhausted, a player can continue holding the Jump key to glide. Gliding fall speed can be accelerated by holding the ▼ Down key in addition.

Wings additionally grant immunity from fall damage (except when overridden by the Stoned debuff, which nullifies fall damage protection items like the Lucky Horseshoe.)

Flight is much more controlled with wings than with Rocket Boots, Spectre Boots, etc. alone, and they allow for much greater flight range. Equipping wings generally replaces jumps entirely with flight, rather than requiring a double-jump to activate. However, the wings stack with the flight of Rocket Boots and its upgrades. Double-jump accessories like the Cloud in a Bottle will still grant an additional jump, which is used after all flight time.

There are currently 47 unique wing types in total: 45 are available on PC version PC, Console version Console, Mobile version Mobile, and tModLoader version tModLoader, 39 on tModLoader 1 tModLoader Legacy, and 21 on Old-gen console version Old-gen console, Windows Phone version Windows Phone, and 3DSNintendo 3DS version. Flight time and speed can vary by the version.

    Types[]

Wings have a variety of origins: Some can be crafted, a few can be purchased outright, one is an Angler reward, a few are dropped directly from bosses, and Fledgling Wings are gifted to every new Journey Mode character or found in Skyware Chests and Sky Crates/Azure Crates

In Expert Mode, more wings can come as part of Treasure Bags: Each Hardmode Treasure Bag has a 5*1/20 (5%) chance to drop a random set of developer items, and all sets include wings (with the exception of Aaron's set).

Most craftable wings are crafted at a Hardmode Anvil: Most require 20 Souls of Flight and a core item determining the wing type. This core item can be a rare enemy drop with no other use (Such as the Giant Harpy Feather for the Harpy Wings), or a quantity of material representing a new stage of the game(Such as Shroomite Bars for the Hoverboard).

The four lunar wings (Solar Wings, Vortex Booster, Nebula Mantle, and Stardust Wings) are instead crafted like other endgame equipment: At the Ancient Manipulator from Luminite Bars and Lunar Fragments; they do not require Souls of Flight.

All wings can be sold for 8, except for the Leaf Wings (30 / 20 ), Steampunk Wings (60 / 20 ) and Fledgling Wings (4).

    All wings[]

    • The player cannot equip more than one wing at a time.
    • All wings work in water (but doing so gives the same movement speed penalty).
    • Some jump-boost accessories stack with wings to boost flight (see chart above).
    • When a wing is placed in a social slot and another is placed in an accessory slot, the full animation of the vanity wings are shown, along with any lighting and particle effects. Flight duration and other functional characteristics follow those in the non main accessory slot.
    • Wings can be hidden when equipped and will be hidden while not in the air, otherwise they are always visible (except when using other equipment that adds graphics to the player's back, like the Leaf Blower or Turtle Scale Mail). They fold into a low-profile image when not used.
    • The horizontal speed of any midair jumps (such as the Cloud in a Bottle) are greatly decreased when the player wears wings alongside them.
    • The fall-damage-negating effect is carried over even if the wings are placed in the sixth accessory slot in an expert or master world and then the player enters a normal world.

    Specific wings[]

    • Even when dyed, the Jetpack's particle effect will give off orange light, though the particles will change color according to the dye. This also applies to the Vortex Booster (which gives off teal light). As of 1.4, wings in vanity slots no longer give off light, so invisibility based characters can use this to their advantage.
    • Fishron Wings work in liquids, just as they do on land (including lava and honey), with the same speed, unlike other wings. This makes them very useful for more aquatic situations like building in the Ocean.
    • Ghost Wings and Spectre Wings will only change color with the use of Black Dye, which makes them appear dark gray.
Jumping paths with Sandstorm in a Balloon and wings

The paths produced by jumping with a Sandstorm in a Balloon with the player not wearing wings at all (left) and the player wearing wings on vanity (right). Notice the difference in the angles when the player ascends.
The player is jumping from the sand into the water.

    Tips[]

    Trivia[]

Mothron wings with dye can make them look like Butterfly wings.
Dye can make some wings look like other wings. For an example, Mothron Wings with dye look like Butterfly Wings.
    • Dyeing Red's Wings in combination with Hermes Boots or any of its upgrades will change the color of the smoke below the player.
    • Prior to 1.3.0.1, Red's Wings would allow the wearer to fly infinitely and faster than any other wings.
    • Old-gen console versionWindows Phone On old-gen console and mobile, Red's Wings and some other developer wings can only be obtained through inventory editing.
      • Xbox 360Wii U When Red's Wings are obtained in the Xbox 360 or Wii U editions, they don't disappear and can be used without any problems. The other developer wings can also be obtained, but they will not give infinite flight. When other wings are used over Red's Wings as an appearance, the ascent speed bonus disappears.
      • PlayStation 3 It is confirmed that the wings can be obtained on PS3 consoles.
      • Windows Phone The wings disappear as soon as the world is left, if they were previously equipped or stowed in a chest.
    • Ghostar's Infinity Eight's name comes from the Infinity Eight in the series of single-player action role-playing games .hack//G.U.. Their appearance resembles the sword-wings of the Avatar Skeith in its Xth Form. Its tooltip, "I am right here," is used throughout the .hack//G.U. games.
    • Despite being non-moving constructs of technology, Ghostar's Infinity Eight and Arkhalis' Lightwings both produce flapping noises.
