Choosing a Program

The Study Abroad Office offers a wide range of programs that vary by cost, location, length, and program type. Programs approved by the UNC Study Abroad Office are academically rigorous, and all participants will earn credit and grades for courses completed on any Study Abroad Office program, though the type of credit will vary depending on the program.

Things to Consider

  • Do you prefer a specific region/country/city?
  • How much time do you want to spend abroad?
  • Have you discussed the best time to go abroad with your academic advisor?

  • Is a certain type of program better suited for your goals?
  • Do you want to be in class with Americans or local students?
  • Would you like an experience with more built-in support, or more independence? For example, do you want logistical help with arranging housing, course registration, and excursions, or are you comfortable with figuring out these logistics independently?

  • How much do you have budgeted for study abroad?
  • Have you discussed your budget with your family?
  • Have you reviewed the Cost & Funding FAQs?
  • As an in-state student, is an exchange program the best option financially for you? Or, as an out-of-state student, would a direct-enroll or provider program be a better financial fit?

  • What kind of courses do you want to take abroad?
  • What kind of credit are you looking for? Keep in mind that courses on our UNC faculty-led programs taught by UNC professors will offer UNC graded credit, while any course taught by a non-UNC professor will be eligible for transfer credit. Learn more about earning credit for your coursework.
  • Have you reviewed the list of pre-approved courses?
  • Do you want the opportunity to conduct research, do an internship, or have a service-learning opportunity?
  • Is there a certain foreign language you want to study while abroad? At what level?
  • What language of instruction do you prefer?
