- "In hope of a better tomorrow, we cede control of the banks to the Office of the Chancellor of the Galactic Republic."
- ―Senator Nix Card, to the Galactic Senate
The Office of the Chancellor, also known as the office of the Supreme Chancellor, consisted of the immediate staff of the Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic. The second highest-ranking official in the office was the Vice Chair. In addition, a Chief of Staff and senior aides assisted the chancellery with the administrative matters.
The Office of the Chancellor maintains both the Chancellery Secretariat beneath the Senate chambers of the Galactic Senate Building and the Chancellor's office in the Senate Office Building.
Following the death of Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas over the moon of Oba Diah, much of the information surrounding his demise was classified by the the administration of Chancellor Finis Valorum. The office's authority and influence expanded to an unprecedented level throughout the Clone Wars, a process that began with the Galactic Senate empowering Valorum's successor, Chancellor Sheev Palpatine, with wartime powers. In the aftermath of the Republic invasion of Scipio, the chancellery gained control over the assets of the InterGalactic Banking Clan. The office was ultimately dissolved when Palpatine proclaimed the formation of the Galactic Empire, with himself as Emperor of the galaxy.
Composition[]
Positions[]
Overview[]
The Office of the Chancellor was headed by the Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic and based on the Republic capital world of Coruscant.[2] The Vice Chair was part of the office as vice chancellor in addition to their role as speaker of the Galactic Senate.[7] The senior administrative aide served the chancellor as an executive assistant.[8] In the waning days of the Republic, a representative of the chancellery was appointed to the Jedi High Council.[6]
Greylark/Mollo chancellery[]
- "Yes, well, I came as soon as the Office of the Frontier alerted me of your mission to Eiram. We sent you a tightbeam transmission, but when I did not hear back, I did what I thought best. I'm sure Chancellor Greylark will agree that we had to seize this opportunity. In our haste to intercept you, I was unable to update her of my change of plans. Not that I require her permission, of course."
- ―Chancellor Orlen Mollo
During the days of Great Hyperspace Rush and Republic expansion period of the the High Republic Era, the position of chancellor was held by two individuals—the human Kyong Greylark and the Quarren Orlen Mollo[9]—as Co-Chancellors.[10] Holding shared-power, the two chancellors set about governing the galactic differently. While Greylark remained on Coruscant, Mollo traveled across the Outer Rim Territories to help with the government's expansion and end crises. Both maintained separate offices, with the office of Chancellor Greylark taking credit for relief supplies brought to the warring planets of E'ronoh and Eiram by her son, Axel Greylark. Axel was himself a figure of controversy and gossip over the HoloNet. In secret, Axel had ties with the Path of the Open Hand cult, whose leader, the Mother, ordered him to steal vials of poison from the Eiram. Experiencing a change of heart after his time with Jedi Knight Gella Nattai, Eirami prince Phan-tu Zenn, and E'roni princess Xiri A'lbaran, Axel decided to destroy the poison amid the Wedding of Phan-tu Zenn and Xiri A'lbaran by flooding the Erasmus Capital City. In the end, Axel was arrested and the destruction came to its end, with the peace between both worlds forged by the wedding still standing despite the incident and efforts of the rogue Children of E'ronoh.[9]
Rather than have a direct Republic representative, Mollo elected to bring in Morton San Tekka as mediator of the treaty signing summit over fears that having an elected official would be seen as Republic overreach. However, the summit was disrupted by the Path and devolved into the Battle of Jedha.[10] Efforts to again establish a ceasefire crossed over into the Republic and Jedi's investigation into the Path, whose members broke Axel out of prison on the order of the Mother. She hoped to leverage Axel's relationship with Chancellor Greylark into Path influence and thus had him send a message requesting she come to the Path homeworld of Dalna. Wanting to finally help her son while also not wanting to put the Republic at risk, Kyong did arrive, but only after giving up her title as Chancellor. Her action thus left Mollo the sole leader of the Republic, much to his shock, and ruined the Mother's plans. In the ensuing Battle of Dalna, the united forces of Eiram and E'ronoh aided the Jedi and Republic in battle, shattering the Path and re-establishing the ceasefire. Beyond beginning to forge a real connection with his mother, Axel also accepted his crimes and willingly returned to prison. While she promised to help out in the transition period, Kyong had no intentions of returning to office.[11]

The Jedi High Council, though autonomous in the management of the internal affairs of the Jedi Order,[21] was bound by duty to serve the Senate.[6] By extension, the Jedi served at the discretion of the Senate's elected leader, the Supreme Chancellor,[22] but nonetheless maintained their direct allegiance to the galactic legislature.[6]
