"My name is Jak'zin. I doubt you would remember me."
―Jak'zin, to Dooku[2]

Jak'zin was a Togorian Jedi who served the Jedi Order. By 42 BBY, while a Jedi Initiate on the planet Coruscant, he was friends with fellow initiates Gheyr and Krrsish, a Trandoshan and a Wookiee respectively. At the Jedi Temple, he met Jedi Masters Yoda and Dooku. During his training, Jak'zin was sent, along with the Tibidee Clan to which he belonged, to the astronomical object Corvair II to undergo a trial. While there, Gheyr and Krrsish dueled each other, and Jak'zin tried to intervene, resulting in him getting knocked out by the Wookiee.

Jak'zin eventually became a Jedi Knight. In 26 BBY, the Togorian traveled to the planet Sullust to investigate the Kaldana Syndicate, a criminal organization that had made inroads on the world. While on Sullust, he crossed paths with Dooku, who had previously left the Jedi Order. Dooku, secretly a Sith Lord, gained Jak'zin's trust and offered to help him on his mission.

When the duo located the Kaldana Syndicate, the organization's guards surrounded them, and Dooku used his red lightsaber to fight them. Although surprised by the color of Dooku's lightsaber—which was that of a Sith—Jak'zin fought by his side against the criminals. After surviving the fight, the Togorian still felt distrustful of Dooku and his red-colored weapon. At that point, Dooku revealed his true allegiance and used the Force to manipulate a blaster, fatally shooting Jak'zin in the back.

Early life[]

"I haven't seen you since I was a youngling at the Jedi Temple, before you left the Order. But I'll never forget your dueling demonstrations with Master Yoda. Your skill with a lightsaber was simply inspirational."

A Togorian, Jak'zin joined the Jedi Order[2] at some point by 42 BBY.[4] As a youngling,[5] he joined the Tibidee Clan[3] and was friends with the Wookiee Krrsish and the Trandoshan[5] Gheyr.[3] One day, as the three Jedi were training along with several other younglings in the Jedi Temple on[5] the planet[6] Coruscant, Jedi Masters Dooku and Yoda gave them a demonstration of lightsaber combat. Before the duel, Jak'zin told Krrsish and Gheyr that Dooku had been Yoda's Padawan and was currently on the Jedi High Council, to which the Wookiee replied that the Togorian read too much. When Jak'zin stopped talking, Gheyr took his hand and brought him to see the duel more closely. After the demonstration, Jak'zin and Gheyr commented on the duel with excitement, but Krrsish claimed that he would become a better Jedi than the two Jedi Masters. The two friends mocked him, saying that he would need eight hundred years to catch up. Gheyr asked if Dooku was really that old, but Jak'zin replied that it was Yoda's age and that Dooku was likely seven hundred years old.[5]

Later, while the three Jedi were meditating, Jak'zin and Gheyr kept discussing the duel between the Masters they had witnessed. However, Krrsish claimed they were disturbing him, and the two younglings left the meditation room to talk elsewhere. During his meditation, the Wookiee had a vision of Wookiees and Trandoshans fighting each other.[5] Subsequently, Jak'zin and Gheyr had a lightsaber sparring duel, and the Trandoshan defeated the Togorian. After the duel, Krrsish bumped into Gheyr, claiming she enjoyed causing harm, which the Trandoshan denied. Since Krrsish kept having visions of Wookiees being killed by Trandoshans, he discussed it with Dooku, who advised him to keep observing and gathering evidence about his visions.[3]

Trial on Corvair II and Dooku[]

"Hey, Krrsish. Everything okay?"
―Jak'zin, to Krrsish while on Corvair II[3]

Jak'zin kept training with Krrsish and Gheyr, dueling, meditating, and eating with them. The three friends also built their lightsabers together. Sometime later, Yoda accompanied Tibidee Clan to face a trial on the astronomical object Corvair II, where several initiates were left alone to reconnect with the Force. While on Corvair II, Krrsish approached the Togorian and the Trandoshan, asking to talk to Gheyr alone. Jak'zin wondered if the Wookiee was agitated, but Krrsish did not reply. While alone, the Wookiee hit Gheyr, who started to fight back, throwing Krrsish to the ground. After standing back up, the Wookiee ignited his lightsaber and jumped against Gheyr.[3]

Before Krrsish could attack the Trandoshan, Jak'zin ran to them and pushed the Wookiee to the ground. However, Krrsish used his lightsaber to harm the Togorian and punched him in the face, knocking Jak'zin out. Krrsish and Gheyr kept fighting before Yoda walked up to them and stopped the duel. The Jedi Master ordered Jak'zin to go back to the camp and calmed the other two initiates. Eventually, the Tibidee Clan traveled back to the Temple, and Krrsish kept training to become a Jedi. Gheyr, however, decided to leave the Jedi Order and departed with Dooku as he went on a diplomatic trip. Before she left, Jak'zin hugged his friend and told her he would miss her.[7]

Sometime later, Jak'zin came to know Dooku's apprentice, Qui-Gon Jinn.[2] However, Dooku became disillusioned with the Order and left it[6] in 42 BBY,[4] returning to the planet Serenno to take up his legacy[8] in becoming the Count of Serenno.[6] In his absence,[2] in 32 BBY,[1] Jedi Master Jinn was killed by the Sith Darth Maul.[6] Jak'zin soon heard rumors circulating among the Jedi about Dooku, the most common being that Dooku was starting his own order of Force-sensitives.[2]

Mission to Sullust[]

Reunion with Dooku[]

"Pardon me for asking, but… Is this mission of yours particularly dangerous?"
"I mean… They did send a Jedi for a reason, count."

Jak'zin eventually ascended to the title of Jedi Knight.[2] In 26 BBY, he was sent to the planet Sullust[1] to investigate the Kaldana Syndicate, a criminal association that had made inroads on the planet and proved to be a problem to the Galactic Republic. While on Sullust, he crossed paths with Dooku, who had become a Sith Lord and was there to undergo contract negotiations with Representative Kap Klyp of the SoroSuub Corporation—and also to secretly seek out the Kaldana Syndicate for Darth Sidious, his Sith Master.[2]

After reuniting with Dooku, Jak'zin commended the count's Jedi days and mentioned knowing his apprentice, Jinn. Although Klyp was eager to get back to business, Dooku invited Jak'zin to join them for dinner. Over the meal, Dooku and Jak'zin discussed the rumor of the former starting his own order of Force-users. Dooku dismissed the claim, explaining that he was looking after his family's interests on Serenno. When the count inquired as to Jak'zin's presence on Sullust, the Togorian replied that it was a private matter for the Jedi Council, and Dooku did not insist.[2]

That evening, Dooku approached Jak'zin, wanting to take a walk with him. The count asked the Togorian about the danger posed by his mission, to which Jak'zin remarked that there was a reason that a Jedi had been dispatched to carry it out. Dooku then brought up his apprentice, Jinn, and the two went on to speak highly of the late Jedi Master, with Dooku wondering whether him never leaving the Order could have prevented Jinn's death and further adding that the presence of Jinn's own apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi, had not been enough to save him. The count subsequently offered to help Jak'zin with his mission, stating his intention to make a difference. Trusting the former Jedi Master, Jak'zin confided in him the knowledge of his task, and Dooku offered to accompany him. Jak'zin was skeptical at first, but Dooku convinced him by pointing out that he was particularly interested in Sullust's safety since he had a major financial investment on the planet.[2]

Betrayed by Dooku[]

Allowing Dooku to join him, Jak'zin immediately began jumping across the roofs of the city with Dooku following. They soon reached a building that Jak'zin had tracked the Kaldana Syndicate to, but the Togorian was not aware of the makeup of the organization's forces. Dooku suggested approaching the syndicate more diplomatically, and the two Force-users went up to the entrance of the building. As Jak'zin knocked on the door, a hatch opened to his right and a blaster fired at him. Dooku Force-pushed the Jedi out of the way, saving his life. Using his lightsaber, Jak'zin cut through the door and deflected blaster shots from members of the Kaldana.[2]

As he fended off several more of the syndicate, the Jedi discovered crates of weapons, deducing that the organization was smuggling arms. The pair was then surrounded by several Kaldana guards. While Jak'zin was processing their situation, Dooku revealed his lightsaber. Much to the Togorian's surprise, it was red in color, symbolizing Dooku's true allegiance to the Sith. The Kaldana members then opened fire, after which Dooku and Jak'zin killed the criminals. Jak'zin subsequently questioned how Dooku had acquired his red-colored weapon. In response, Dooku claimed that he had made the lightsaber and used the Force to lift a blaster and shoot Jak'zin in the back, killing him. After Jak'zin's death, Dooku claimed authority over the Kaldana Syndicate, delivering it into the hands of Darth Sidious.[2]

Personality and traits[]

"I can't help but notice that whatever your mission, you face it alone. Forgive an old man for thinking that perhaps this time he could make a difference."
"Well, you were a Jedi Master once…"
―Dooku gains Jak'zin's trust[2]

Jak'zin was betrayed by Dooku.

As a youngling, Jak'zin was friends with his fellow initiates Gheyr and Krrsish. He was impressed by Dooku's and Yoda's dueling skills, discussing the duel they had seen with his friend Gheyr.[5] He tried to protect Gheyr in a fight against Krrsish even though the intervention endangered the Togorian himself.[7] As a Jedi Knight, Jak'zin idolized Dooku even after the count had left the Jedi Order. It clouded his judgment of the count when they conversed, and he was manipulated into revealing his mission to Dooku as well as bringing him along, although he was wary of it. Jak'zin saw no fault in his decisions until Dooku revealed his red lightsaber, and even then he did not immediately assume the count was a Sith. Jak'zin was a Togorian with yellow eyes and orange and white fur that had black stripes.[2]

Powers and abilities[]

"Let me know if I'm going too fast."
"I'll be fine."
―Jak'zin and Dooku, while jumping across the roofs of the city[2]

Jak'zin, being Force-sensitive, was able to Force jump and could sense danger, although he was not able to perceive or dodge the blaster bolt fired through a hatch in the wall. He wielded a lightsaber and was capable of deflecting blaster bolts with it.[2]

Equipment[]

While training as a youngling, Jak'zin wielded a green lightsaber and wore white Jedi robes.[5] As a Jedi Knight, the Togorian wore brown and tan Jedi robes and utilized a blue lightsaber during combat.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

"Out today is Star Wars Age of Republic: Count Dooku, perhaps the most fun of the series to write. Art by @LukeRossMarvel and #JavaTartaglia. FYI, the tiger dude is a Togorian, a species last drawn by Luke in Thrawn!"
―Jody Houser[9]

Jak'zin first appeared in the one-shot comic Age of Republic - Count Dooku 1, published by Marvel Comics[2] on February 13, 2019.[10] The comic was written by Jody Houser and illustrated by Luke Ross and Java Tartaglia.[2]
