"House Hunting" is a The Patrick Star Show episode from season 1. In this episode, the Star family house runs away from home.

Characters[]

Synopsis[]

The episode starts off as a cheerful, Disney-esque 1930's-style cartoon seemingly titled "Hamdonia Hooray," featuring a location called "Hamdonia." Its joyful citizens are having an all-smiles parade, until a rampaging mouth-like figure comes upon the town and starts eating them. The king decides to make a sacrifice in order to satisfy the hungry beast, choosing an innocent frankfurter as their subject. As the hot dog is locked up and prepared to die, the scene cuts to the cartoon really just being a puppetry performance by Patrick held for a couple of prisoners.

House Hunting 080

The Star house runs through the city.

Suddenly, the house begins shaking. The family evacuates in time, except for GrandPat. Suddenly, the house sprouts chicken legs and runs off, clucking. Squidina encourages the family to track it down by using Patrick's studio as a vehicle. As the house runs downtown, GrandPat tries to continue his normal morning routine. Squidina starts catching up to the house, but after driving through an electronics store, they lose track of it. Tinkle smells it up ahead and guides them into the forest. Suddenly, they are interrupted by Perch Perkins and a group of cyclists biking by. The cyclists get eaten by the house and drive through it, startling GrandPat.

Patrick gets atop the studio vehicle, and Bunny uses him as a boomerang to wrap around the house with a rope. She tells Squidina to hit the brakes and stop the house. It does, and he ties the house to the vehicle. However, the house takes off and sends the studio spinning away. They see the house run to the top of a building. Patrick takes the lead and drives through it, riding the elevator up to the top floor.

House Hunting 162

The baby house hatches.

At the top of the building, they see the house resting in a nest, as a toaster oven mates with it. Bunny realizes that the house does it every year. The house lays a metal egg, revealing a mini house that resembles a fusion of its parents. GrandPat reveals himself inside the oven, resting in a cup of coffee. He's happy to have his own place and the baby house flies off into the sun, keeping GrandPat in it.

To get the house back home, Squidina gets the idea to lay coffee beans along the road and lead it back. The house burrows back into its original spot, and the family revert their studio back. Patrick hugs the house in relief. Suddenly, a black car drives up, and the residents of Hamdonia get out. They identify Patrick as the mouth that destroyed their land, and chase Patrick around the house. GrandPat flies into the screen, cheering and riding in the baby house. The episode ends with a "The End" card styled like the Hamdonia cartoon.

Storyboards[]

Patrick and co. try to sneak up on their house, but are interrupted by a school of bikers.

Patrick "Rat Finks" his way into the hotel, and corners the Star house on top of a skyscraper.

GrandPat is revealed to be safe and sound in the coffee-pot's husband, the microwave.

Production notes[]

Ian Vazquez:

  • This was Ian Vazquez's final Patrick segment he directed before new crew members joined the series. Since it was his last chance to do a style change in the show, he decided to make an homage to the aforementioned Silly Symphony cartoon, "The Cookie Carnival."[13]

Kyle Morrison:

  • This was the third and final Patrick segment that Kyle Morrison worked on,[3][9] after "Shrinking Stars"[21] and "Uncredible Journey." They made various comments about the production of this episode, just like "Uncredible Journey."[22]
    • Morrison said that the sail-fish cyclists' bikes were challenging to draw, but the racers' design were fun to work with (and copy-&-paste across the screen.[3])
    • Morrison said that the sequence where Patrick drives through the hotel was one of the most insane things they've had to plus on the show so far. Despite being unsure if Ian Vazquez wanted Patrick to be in "full Ratfink mode" during the hallway shot, they were glad that it made it in the final cut.[20]
    • The part that Morrison will miss the most about working on the series is Patrick's family, as they believe they're the highlight of the spin-off and a ton of fun to act out.[23]

Aaron Painter:

  • On an opposite note, this was one of the first episodes Aaron Painter (a prop designer at Nickelodeon) worked on when starting the occupation full time. Painter said that the segment was "a fun episode that turned out great!"[24]
    • Painter said that he drew a lot of cars on the last show he worked on, and he was looking forward to a break while beginning a full-time position on Patrick. Ironically, one of his first assignments for the series was to design a car.[18]

Sterling Richter:

  • Sterling said that the Hamdonia backgrounds were "pretty fun to do, especially having to create meat oriented vernacular without looking creepy, emulating the feathery pen lineweight seen in 1930s toon watercolour paintings."[5]

Trivia[]

General[]

The Patrick Star Show episodes Backpay Payback and House Hunting YTV listing for February 25, 2023
  • In Canada, this episode was also originally going to air on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at 9:15 AM but was later postponed, and got replaced with a rerun of "The Yard Sale."
    • If said cancellation didn't happen, it would mean that this segment's Canadian airdate occurred exactly a year after the episode's confirmation.
  • In Canada, this episode was once again originally scheduled to air on Sunday, March 19, 2023 at 3:45 PM, but was then postponed for a second time, and got replaced with a rerun of "Pat-a-thon."
  • The opening segment is animated in a 4:3 aspect ratio. This is the first time this ratio has been used in The Patrick Star Show.
    • This episode is also the first episode in the franchise since "Hello Bikini Bottom!" (in packaging order), "The Good Krabby Name" (in production order), and "Move It or Lose It" / "Chum Fricassee" (in airing order) which were all from the parent series, SpongeBob SquarePants. This is also the first 4:3 title card used in the franchise since season 8 of the parent series.
    • The entire "Hamdonia Hooray" cartoon was boarded and animated in widescreen, but the scene was kept to a 4:3 ratio in order to keep the action towards the middle for a clean cut.[15]
  • This episode reveals that the Star family's home migrates from its natural habitat every year, going out on a rampant spree around town, mating, and laying an egg.
    • This segment also reveals that the TV that resides next to the coffee house is a drivable vehicle. The Stars use it to chase their house around Bikini Bottom.
  • My leg!: Sausage-Bard says "My eyes!" in the "Hamdonia Hooray" cartoon, during the sacrifice scene.
    • The quote was referenced again later on in the episode, when Fred says "My eggs!" as he gets crammed into an elevator and the eggs he's holding crack.
  • Unlike the Star house being alive in this episode, the Star house was sleeping in the opening of "A Space Affair to Remember," noting that it was alive in that episode.
  • This is the last episode to premiere during Nickelodeon's 2017-2023 branding. The next new Patrick Star Show episode, "Super Sitters" (in airing order), "The Drooling Fool" (in packaging order) or "Ma and Pa's Big Hurrah" (for any SpongeBob-related media) would use the current 2023 branding.
  • This marks the first appearance of Billy Bob Star in The Patrick Star Show, as well as his return following "Rule of Dumb."

Episode references[]

  • The prisoners from "The Inmates of Summer" appear watching The Patrick Show!, being closely monitored by a prison guard.
    • Ian Vazquez liked making what he called "The Lawnies" the most random group of characters he and his crew could put together, explaining their inclusion in this segment.[31]
  • The drawing of Billy Bob Star from "Rule of Dumb" appears in a frame inside the Star house.
  • Incidental 104 appears in her store employee uniform from "Penny Foolish" and "Hello Bikini Bottom!"
  • Ukulele Bottom, first mentioned in "I Was a Teenage Gary," makes its first physical appearance in this episode and it is revealed the Star family resides here. Due to Ian leaving the show to resume working on SpongeBob SquarePants, this is no longer considered canon as none of the new crew members have followed his lead.
    • According to Ian Vazquez, Ukulele Bottom is often referred to as a part of Bikini Bottom (a suburban area) and shares a large county, but it is a driveaway. Vazquez compared the two locations' relationship to that of Burbank (and other small cities) and Los Angeles and its county.[32]
  • The flower arch reappears again, alongside with other additional buildings that were seen in earlier season 1 episodes and the pitch bible, since The Patrick Star Show is a prequel series.[33][4]
    • According to Ian Vazquez, the flower arch was built for an event and stayed up for way too long, getting removed years later.[33]

Cultural references[]

  • This episode's title is a reference to the title of the series House Hunters.
    • Coincidentally, the working title for "Unreal Estate" was also a reference to this show.
  • There are many cultural references based on the golden age of American animation.
    • The "Hamdonia Hooray" puppetry segments of the episode are inspired by the 1935 Walt Disney Animation Studios short film, "The Cookie Carnival," with various Hamdonians' designs being direct homages to the citizens seen in the '30s cartoon.[13]
      • The title and ending card are direct references to the "Silly Symphony" series of shorts produced by the studio.
    • The "beep-beep" heard from the Stars' TV vehicle mimics that of the Road Runner, who stars alongside Wile E. Coyote in a series of Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies shorts created by Chuck Jones.
    • King Pork-Chop's design is inspired by Old King Cole's in the 1933 Disney cartoon of the same name.
    • Princess Hamhock and Ham Salad Suzie's outfits are both inspired by Mickey and Minnie's in the 1938 Disney cartoon, Brave Little Tailor.
      • The former's model sheet design is very akin to that of the late '30s incarnation of the aforementioned Porky.
    • The Bacon Boys' outfits are inspired by those of Pinocchio in the 1940 Disney film adaption.
  • Many of the Hamdonians are also inspired by different types of food:
    • A majority of the lesser citizens are inspired by mid-century meat products.[34]
    • The Sausage Hamdonian's bread roll vehicle is inspired by Underwood's "Ham Boat" recipe.[35]
    • The Decorated Polish Ham Pilgrim Man's design was inspired by a decorated Polish ham design that can be found on a 1979 Krakus & Atlanta "Decorate-a-Polish Ham" magazine advertisement.[36]
    • The mustard bottle was inspired by French's cream salad mustard, as well as a stock image of a bottle.
    • The "Easter Ham" was inspired by a vintage Easter-themed Wilson's Certified Meats advertisement.
  • Ham-Salad Suzie's design is extremely similar to that of Cuphead, who stars in the in the 2017 video game of the same name.
    • Coincidentally, Ian Vazquez, who created the Disney-esque design for the character, also worked on The Cuphead Show!
  • GrandPat's toothpaste haircut resembles the one of Elvis Presley.
  • The sail-fish cyclists' body shapes are inspired by the cyclists from the 2002 French animated comedy film, The Triplets of Belleville.[2]
  • When Patrick drives into the hotel, he makes a face that resembles Rat Fink, a character created by Ed Roth.
