Does Canada know something that everyone else doesn’t when it comes to sleeping? The Douglas mattress from GoodMorning.com is available only in Canada, and I’m here to find out if the rest of the world is missing out in this Douglas mattress review.

I tested the Douglas for its composition and feel before comparing it to other mattresses in its price range: the Endy and the Casper. Even if you can’t get your hands on a Douglas, you can still get one of these brands outside of Canada. First, I’ll get into the company behind the mattress before moving on into the details of the product, but if you can’t read the whole article, click here to jump to the summary.

Editor's Note: The Douglas mattress has changed since we originally wrote this review and has been designed to feel firmer. We plan to update this review with more up-to-date information once we have re-tested the Douglas mattress.

Is the Douglas mattress right for you? Below, I’ve included my recommendations on who I think will and will not like this mattress. Let’s jump in.

AllCanada mattresses get tested for firmness just like the American ones. I tested the Douglas with a few of my colleagues with different body types, because this makes a huge difference in the feel of the mattress.

The firmness scale that I use goes from 1 to 10 — 1 being softest and 10 being firmest. 6.5 stands for the medium firmness industry standard, not 5. The Douglas felt a wee bit softer than the median, so I would rate it a 6 out of 10. Firmness can mean different things when sleepers are in different positions, so I tested for this next.

The top layers of the Douglas are meant to provide a comforting contour to the body. When lying on my back, I felt myself sink into the mattress almost immediately. I did also feel a good bit of support from the firmer layers below, so I never felt stuck in the bed or a lack of mobility. The Douglas also provided me with the support I needed to switch positions without feeling overworked.

My hips were essential in letting me know the mattress was on the softer side. The hips are a sensitive area for many sleepers—essential to keeping the back in alignment. The Douglas did not always give me the support I needed for this all-important alignment. I will talk more about this when I let you know how the Douglas performed on my Pressure Map test.

In general, strict side sleepers and combo sleepers should be able to find a comfortable night’s sleep from the Douglas. The softer nature of the mattress gave me pressure relief in my shoulders when I needed it most, allowed me to switch positions easily, and stayed generally comfortable regardless of my sleeping position.

Here at Sleepopolis, we use a variety of tools to test mattresses for the features most important to you. Below, we’ll cover how the Douglas performs for pressure relief, edge support, various sleeper types, and even couples.

Different sleepers need different amounts of support when it comes to their preferred sleeping position and size. Let’s get into it.

The color-coded pressure map I put on top of the Douglas helps find the spots a sleeper might experience discomfort in over an eight-hour sleep session. The map goes on top of the Douglas, and I lie on top of the map. What shows up is the real-time response between my body and the Douglas. Blue means no worries, green and yellow means slight pressure to slight discomfort over time, and red means possible trouble zones. I tested different positions to simulate different sleeping patterns. Here’s what I found.

Back Pain - What’s especially important here is neutral spine alignment and I think back sleepers can especially find this with the Douglas. I’d be a bit more concerned for stomach sleepers with back pain because of the lack of support in the hips, which could throw the back out of alignment. As for side sleepers, I think they’d find a lot of support in its soft, contouring abilities which provide some nice pressure relief.

Shoulder Pain - I think back sleepers will also find comfort here, as the Douglas supplies ample pressure point relief. Stomach sleepers may be okay here, but this position could lead to discomfort in the hips. Sleeping on my side, I felt the most pressure relief in my shoulders due to the soft nature of this mattress.

Hip Pain - Back sleepers with hip pain shouldn’t experience discomfort in any main pressure points, and the soft support should treat the hips pretty nicely. I think stomach sleepers should be aware that it’s possible for the hips to dig in a bit, causing the spine to curve, which may create added discomfort. Side sleepers could experience slight amounts of pressure, but nothing severe enough that would exacerbate pain. They should still be able to get a comfortable night’s rest.

The needs of couples deserves a section for itself, and we’ve done just that. Below, we’ll focus on important features, such as motion transfer, sex, edge support, and cooling.

The Motion Transfer test includes dropping a 10-pound ball at 4”, 8”, and 12” above the mattress. These heights simulate slight to heavy motions of a restless partner, motions that are picked up with a seismometer I put on the other side of the mattress.

The Douglas isolated motion very well, which means that a restless partner shouldn’t disturb you too much at night.

Sex requires a combined recipe of motion transfer, responsiveness, and even a little bounce. When it comes to the Douglas, I found that the Elastex foam transitional layer gave the mattress some buoyancy. The comfort layer also created a quick response to movement. Overall, I think this Canadian mattress would be a good choice for sex.

When you’re dealing with two sleepers on one bed, there’s bound to be more heat than a single sleeper would experience. Thankfully, the Douglas has a Tencel cover which makes for a cool and breathable night’s sleep.

Testing for edge support includes seeing how sturdy the edges of a bed are and how much support they have when you roll toward the edge or sleep on the edge. Especially for coupled sleeping, I was impressed with the edge support of the mattress. Couples can take advantage of the entire bed, which helps to reduce motion transfer even more (more distance = less motion transferred).

The Douglas has four layers and is all foam. The mix is important to the overall feel, so I will break down the composition of each layer one by one.

Cover – The Tencel blend within the CoolSense® cover is a material that usually sleeps cool. The cover is thin and breathable, so it doesn’t add much weight or density to the bedding at the very least. It’s also washable.

Comfort – After my body hit the cover, it sank right into the first layer of ecoLight® gel memory foam. This 2” of contouring created a comfortable sinking feeling. The gel infusion drew heat away so I never felt too hot while sinking into the layer. Also, the quick response to pressure ensured that I was able to move around with relative ease.

Transition – Elastex foam, also 2” in height, is slightly firmer than the cooling gel foam above it. It's a latex foam alternative and serves a versatile purpose here. It gives an even quicker response to pressure than the comfort layer, giving the mattress a bit of bounce, and keeping with the theme of drawing heat away from the sleeper.

Base – The final support layer of the Douglas is a motion isolation support foam. This 6” section provides a firm, shape-setting base for the mattress, holding up the layers above along with the sleeper.

Thoughts: The Douglas felt firm to me at first and softer over time. The support foam base was too far away from me to really feel its support. Strict side and back sleepers may not need this kind of support, and combo sleepers should be able to stay comfortable if they switch positions often during the night.

I think the Douglas Mattress is solid for an all-foam bed. During my testing, I was impressed by the quality of materials used, especially the Tencel cover and Elastex foam. These materials feel comfortable and give the Douglas Mattress an eco-friendly edge, as they’re almost entirely renewable. If you’re someone who prioritizes sustainability, this mattress ticks a lot of boxes in that regard.

That said, all-foam beds can be more prone to sagging over time compared to hybrid mattresses with coils. This becomes particularly apparent when I consider how the Douglas might perform with heavier individuals or couples, as the foam would compress more under additional weight. While the mattress is built with high-quality materials, it simply doesn’t have the same level of durability as a hybrid, which has the added support of coils.

I also found that the Douglas Mattress is on the softer side, scoring a 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale. While I found it comfortable to lie on, I could imagine that heavier sleepers or those who prefer a firmer feel might experience more noticeable sagging over time. In my testing, I could feel the mattress contouring more to my body than firmer beds, which generally do a better job of maintaining their shape.

However, one thing I really like about the Douglas is its generous 365-night sleep trial and 20-year warranty. Even though all-foam mattresses like this one are generally more prone to wear and tear, these strong guarantees show the brand’s confidence in its durability. I feel confident recommending the Douglas for most sleepers looking for a comfortable, eco-friendly mattress, but if you’re on the heavier side or prefer a firmer bed, you might want to consider a hybrid option for better long-term performance.

The brand recommends asking a friend or family member to help move your new mattress box to its desired location. You should start by carefully opening the box, then placing the mattress on its intended base and rolling it out. You can gently remove the plastic bag and allow it to decompress for a minimum of 30 minutes, but I’d recommend waiting 24 hours for it to fully decompress. Off-gassing is rare, but if it does occur, any smells will dissipate within a day as well.

It’s also recommended that you keep the plastic bag until you are sure you’re keeping the mattress or until your sleep trial is over. This is necessary because if you choose to return your mattress, you’ll need to put the mattress back in the bag for pickup.

Before we wrap things up, let’s take a look at my final thoughts about the Douglas mattress.

My favorite thing about the Douglas was its benefits for combination sleepers. Not only is it just soft enough to keep them comfortable, but it also allows them to change positions and move around with ease. It has a memory foam feel that should conform to the body quite nicely, which will be a plus for side sleepers as well. Its great edge support and low motion transfer should really be a hit for partners sharing a bed. This mattress also sleeps cool, which is a plus for singles and couples alike. I also love that this mattress is so accessible for Canadian shoppers. We made sure to include it in our Best Mattress Canada lineup. Finally, this mattress is almost entirely created with renewable energy which will be a score for eco-lovers.

How did the Douglas Perform?
