A true hybrid mattress, the DreamCloud is constructed with layers of foam and a layer of sturdy coils. While this bed is technically a luxury mattress, it’s surprisingly affordable. After discounts, you can usually find the DreamCloud for well under $1,000. I chose this mattress as the best overall hybrid mattress because it offers a nice balance between comforting pressure relief and strong support that promotes spinal alignment. The DreamCloud falls at a 7 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest. This means it’s a medium-firm bed that leans slightly firm. I think back sleepers will be the most comfortable on this mattress, yet I think it’s a touch too firm for strict side sleepers.

How the DreamCloud Performed in Testing

Motion Isolation 3.5/5

If you sleep with a partner, you may want to consider a bed with good motion isolation. If your partner tends to toss and turn, the motion can disturb your sleep and wake you up. A bed with good motion isolation is able to prevent motion vibrations from traveling across the mattress and affecting the sleeper on the other side.

The motion isolation test involves dropping a 10-pound steel ball onto one side of the mattress from three different heights and measuring the disturbance on the other side using a seismometer. The seismometer displays the disturbance via a graph where the larger the lines, the worse the motion isolation.

When we take a look at the DreamCloud’s seismograph, we see large and abrupt spikes. This tells us that you’re likely to feel larger movements from a partner at night, such as getting in and out of bed. This isn’t the worst motion isolation I’ve ever seen, but very light sleepers may be easily woken up.

I thought the DreamCloud mattress felt incredibly supportive when I tested it. As I mentioned earlier, this bed leans slightly firm due to its support layer of tall, individually wrapped coils. The foams up top are slightly softer, but the coils did a great job lifting my body out of the structure and preventing too much sinkage. I felt most supported when sleeping on my back due to the balance of pressure relief and solid support that promotes spinal alignment.

When I assess a mattress for cooling, I first take a look at its materials and construction. The DreamCloud is a hybrid mattress, so it contains a tall layer of coils. These coils add space to the bed and allow air to flow in and out without becoming trapped. Hybrid mattresses are typically more cooling than foam mattresses in general due to this feature. The DreamCloud also contains a layer of gel memory foam. Although memory foam is known for trapping heat, the gel infusion helps dissipate heat away from the body.

I next quantify the bed’s cooling abilities using a thermal gun. I first measured the initial temperature of the bed and then measured how much it heated up after I spent five minutes lying on it. The DreamCloud’s initial temperature only increased by 7 degrees, which indicates great cooling. I think this bed could be a good choice for sleepers who tend to overheat at night.

Edge Support 4.5/5

Edge support refers to how strong the mattress is around the perimeter. A mattress with strong edge support will be just as sturdy and stable along the edges as it is in the very center. If you sleep with another person or simply like to spread out, you may want to pay close attention to this category, as strong edge support can make a mattress feel larger. Strong edge support can also be a durability indicator, as weak edge support can lead to premature mattress sagging.

When I sat on the edge of the DreamCloud, I felt very stable. The mattress sank slightly under my weight, but the tall layer of coils didn’t collapse too much and kept me lifted. I never felt like I was about to slip off the bed, so I’d say the edge support is strong.

Pressure Relief 4.5/5

When I test pressure relief in mattresses, I start by rolling a specialized mat onto the bed and then laying on it in different sleeping positions. The mat is able to sense pressure and translate the results into an easy-to-read graphic using thermal imaging. Areas displaying red and yellow indicate high pressure buildup, and areas displaying blue and green indicate low pressure buildup.

If we take a look at my DreamCloud pressure map, we can see a ton of blue at the lower back when back sleeping. When in this position, I felt the foam filling in the space at my lumbar region. When side sleeping, I felt a bit of pressure building at my shoulders and hips, and this is reflected by the touch of yellow on the map. I think back sleepers are the best candidates for pressure relief on this bed, while side sleepers may want a softer bed with a bit more sinkage.

The Helix Midnight Luxe is a luxury version of the standard Helix Midnight. This bed contains a pillow top, zoned support coils, and reinforced edges that the standard model does not include. I was impressed by the balanced feel provided by the soft foams and coils. The mattress is medium-soft, making it the perfect choice for side sleepers. These folk should be able to find some body contouring and sinkage while still feeling lifted and achieving proper spinal alignment. Back sleepers could also be really happy on this bed, but I’d recommend a firmer mattress to stomach sleepers.

How the Helix Midnight Luxe Performed Testing

Motion Isolation 3.5/5

When I performed the seismometer test on the Helix Midnight Luxe, I found pretty average results. The lines on the graph are pretty condensed, indicating motion disturbance dissipated relatively quickly. However, I also performed the wine glass test, which involves placing a full glass of wine on one side of the bed and then rolling around on the other side and observing how much the liquid in the glass moves. The wine glass actually ended up tipping over due to my motion, which is not ideal. I think you’re likely to feel your partner moving around at night unless you’re a sound sleeper.

Like all hybrid mattresses, the Helix Midnight Luxe’s support layer is constructed from coils. However, the Midnight Luxe’s coils are zoned for support, meaning their firmness fluctuates depending on which part of the body needs more support. I thought these coils did a great job promoting a neutral spinal alignment. I was also impressed by the top layer of High-Grade Helix Responsive Foam, which provided some initial support before transitioning the sleeper onto the coils.

The Helix Midnight Luxe comes with a Tencel cover, which is a material derived from Eucalyptus. Tencel is naturally cooling and helps with temperature regulation. The bed’s pillow top layer is quilted with gel foam, which helps with additional cooling. The comfort layer is a layer of Copper Gel Memory Foam. The copper and gel infusions help prevent heat from becoming trapped in the foam. Finally, the airy coils add breathability and help the bed cool down even more. Based on the materials and construction, I would already recommend this bed to hot sleepers.

When I performed the thermal gun test on the Helix Midnight Luxe, I found a temperature increase of 3.3 degrees after laying on it for 5 minutes. These are some of the best cooling results I have ever seen, so I think hot sleepers will be able to sleep nice and cool on this bed.

Edge Support 4/5

The Helix Midnight Luxe contains reinforced edges to prevent mattress sagging. I felt very supported and lifted, and there wasn’t a lot of sinkage when putting my full weight on the edges. While the standard Helix Midnight model only has two sides with edge reinforcement, all four sides of the Helix Midnight Luxe are reinforced.

Pressure Relief 5/5

When we take a look at the Helix Midnight Luxe’s pressure map, we see blue and green when side and back sleeping. I felt really comfortable in either position, and I thought the soft pillow top helped a lot with initial contouring. I gave this bed 5 stars for pressure relief because I think it could help sleepers with back, shoulder, or hip pain.

If you switch between multiple sleeping positions throughout the night, you’re probably a combination sleeper. These sleepers should look for a mattress that’s compatible with a variety of sleeping positions so they’re supported regardless of the position they choose. I’d recommend these sleepers look for a responsive mattress, as this can make switching between sleeping positions easier and prevent the sleeper from becoming “stuck” in the bed’s layers. The WinkBed has an “on top” of the bed feel, making it easy for combo sleepers to move around. The mattress comes in three firmness models – Softer, Luxury Firm, and Firmer. I think the Luxury Firm is a good choice for combo sleepers that alternate between back and side sleeping.

How the WinkBed Performed in Testing

Motion Isolation

Since hybrid beds contain coils, they usually have a certain level of bounce that allows motion to transfer to the other side of the bed. However, I didn’t find the WinkBed overly bouncy, so I had high hopes for its motion-isolating abilities. Looking at the seismograph, I can confidently say this bed has good motion isolation. The pillow top and foam layer were able to absorb some of the initial movement and prevent too much disturbance from reaching the other side of the bed. I think you’re unlikely to wake up due to a partner tossing and turning.

The WinkBed feels very similar to a traditional innerspring mattress. I definitely felt more “on” the bed than “in” the bed due to the extra-tall layer of individually wrapped coils. These coils are zoned for support, so they’re softer and firmer depending on the body part they’re supporting. I felt the most supported when sleeping on my back, but I also think the bed is supportive enough for side sleepers.

Cooling 4.5/5

Straightaway, this bed is super breathable due to the extra-tall coil layer. There’s a lot of room for air to flow through the mattress rather than becoming trapped. The WinkBed also has a moisture-wicking Tencel cover and a gel-infused Euro pillow top for extra cooling. I’ll also note that the bed felt cool to the touch. When I tested the bed with my thermal gun, I found a 7-degree temperature increase after 5 minutes of lying on the bed. These are good results, so I’d recommend the WinkBed to hot sleepers.

Edge Support 4/5

The edge support on the WinkBed was pretty solid. There was barely any sinkage when I sat directly on the edge of the bed. I pulled out a yardstick to measure exactly how much the layers collapsed, which ended up being less than half an inch. When lying directly on the edge of the bed, I felt a bit more unstable. However, I think this bed performed well overall in this category and could be a good choice for sleepers who like to spread out.

Pressure Relief 4.5/5

Out of the three WinkBed models, I tested the Luxury Firm bed for pressure relief. Looking at the pressure map, there’s an even distribution of pressure when I sleep on my back. When sleeping on my side, there was a bit of pressure starting to build at the hips and shoulders. If you’re a combination sleeper who doesn’t spend the entire night on your side, then the luxury firm model could be a good option. Strict side sleepers may want to opt for the Softer model for a bit more sinkage.

I’ve mentioned before that all hybrid mattresses contain a layer of coils, but the Saatva contains two coil layers for extra support. The coil-on-coil construction not only helps keep the bed breathable, but it also helps prop the spine into neutral alignment. I think this bed is a fine pick for back sleepers, who need a balance between pressure relief and support. The three-inch pillow top layer provides contouring around the lumbar region, while the sturdy coils prevent the sleeper from sinking too far into the bed.

How the Saatva Classic Performed in Testing

Motion Isolation 3/5

With two layers of bouncy coils, I had low expectations for the Saatva in the motion transfer category. My suspicions were confirmed by the seismograph, which displayed some pretty harsh lines. Now, these aren’t the worst results ever, but I still think you’re likely to feel a partner moving around. You may be able to sleep through typical tossing and turning, but larger movements may disturb your sleep.

I gave the Saatva 5 stars for support because of its coil-on-coil construction. These two coil layers lift the sleeper up and out of the structure and prevent them from sinking too far. There’s also a layer of memory foam zoned for support, which helps promote proper spinal alignment while adding some slight cushion. This foam layer also contains Saatva’s Spinal Wire for even more spinal support. The Saatva’s high-quality materials and sturdy construction made me feel secure and supported.

We know that coils can help with airflow and breathability. With two layers of coils, the Saatva has a very airy construction that hot sleepers can appreciate. When using the thermal gun, I found a mattress temperature increase of 9.3 degrees after five minutes of laying on the bed. This indicates good cooling, and I didn’t feel like I was overheating when testing this bed.

Edge Support 5/5

The Saatva has some of the best edge support I’ve ever seen in a mattress, which isn’t something I say a lot. The edges felt exactly the same as the center of the bed– supportive and strong. When I sat on the edge of the bed, I measured less than half an inch of sinkage. I think these edges can appeal to sleepers with mobility issues who rely on strong edges to get in and out of bed.

I tested pressure relief on the Luxury Firm model of the Saatva. Looking at the pressure map, there’s mostly blue and green when back and side sleeping. I think this model is the best choice for back sleepers, as it balances pressure relief with support quite well. Stomach sleepers may find better back pain relief from the Firm model.

It’s no secret that hybrid mattresses can be a bit pricy. If you’re a shopper on a budget looking for a high-quality hybrid mattress, allow me to introduce the Silk & Snow Hybrid. This bed is a great budget buy, as it goes for less than $1,000 before discounts, even in the largest size. A queen-size mattress currently costs $850 at full retail, with smaller sizes starting at $650. This bed also frequently goes on sale, so there’s a good chance you’ll be able to buy it for even cheaper. Although the bed doesn’t have a high price, it does have high-quality materials, even earning 4 out of 5 stars in the value category. Overall, I think this is a great mattress for the money.

How the Silk & Snow Hybrid Performed in Testing

Motion Isolation 4.5/5

Taking a glance at the Silk & Snow Hybrid’s seismometer results, I’d say this bed has impressive motion isolation. The lines on the graph are pretty small with very minimal spiking. The graph levels out quickly, which means the disturbance isn’t too large. I think most sleepers won’t be woken up by a tossing and turning partner, so I’d definitely recommend this bed to couples.

The main support system in the Silk & Snow Hybrid mattress is a layer of individually pocketed coils. These coils are zoned for support, so you should find the right level of support at every part of the body. The comfort layer is made from 2 inches of high-density memory foam, which adds support while letting the sleeper sink in a bit.

Cooling 4/5

The Silk & Snow Hybrid contains gel-infused foam, which helps regulate temperature and prevent heat trapping. Plenty of air is able to flow in and out of the mattress due to the coil layer, making the bed very breathable. When testing the bed with my thermal gun, I found a 7.9 degree temperature increase. This means the Silk & Snow has good cooling abilities overall.

Edge Support 3.5/5

The coils in this mattress are encased in foam around the perimeter. In theory, this foam should reinforce the edges and help them be stronger. However, I was less than impressed with the Silk & Snow Hybrid’s edge support. I felt pretty stable when lying along the edge of the bed, but I sank very far into the bed when sitting directly on the edge.

Taking a look at the Silk & Snow Hybrid’s pressure map, I’m happy with the blue and green in the back and side sleeping positions. I do see a bit of yellow beginning to form at my shoulder when side sleeping, so people with preexisting shoulder pain may want a slightly softer bed. But overall, I think back and side sleepers can both find nice pressure relief and contouring from the Silk & Snow Hybrid.

How the Nolah Evolution Performed in Testing

Based on the seismometer test, I think the Nolah Evolution is a great choice for anyone with a restless partner. The lines on the graph are small with minimal spiking, which indicates low motion transfer. Although the bed has some bounce, the foam layers help absorb motion and prevent it from traveling to the other side of the bed.

The main support system in the Nolah Evolution is a layer of patented HDMax EcoSupport Coils. These coils work to lift the sleeper’s spine into neutral alignment and prevent them from sinking too far into the bed. I also found a good amount of support from the two comfort layers and the transition layer. When laying on this bed, I felt stable and comfortable, and I didn’t feel any abnormal bending of the spine.

The layer of HDMax EcoSupport Coils allow for plenty of air to flow through the bed, keeping the sleeper cool. Additional cooling comes from the two comfort layers. The first layer contains Nolah’s ArticTex fibers, which were designed to keep the foam cool. The second layer is made from Nolah’s AirFoamICE, which contains a graphite infusion that helps regulate the temperature. I haven’t used the thermal gun on the Nolah Evolution yet, but those results are coming soon. However, I was overall very impressed with this bed’s cooling construction, and I felt quite cool when lying on it.

The 8-inch layer of HDMax EcoSupport Coils help the Nolah Evolution have very strong edges. Proprietary Edge-Tech support foam encases the coils, which adds some additional reinforcement.. When sitting on the edge of the bed, I noticed some sinkage but still felt supported. I felt even more supported when lying on the edges, and I didn’t feel like I was about to fall off the bed.

As a true medium-firm mattress, the Nolah Evolution is a great choice for sleepers with back pain. Looking at the pressure map, there’s only blue and green when back and side sleeping. When I slept on my back, I thought the bed did a great job keeping my spine aligned while offering some cushioning at the lower back. How the Leesa Sapira Chill Performed in Testing

For a hybrid mattress, I thought the Leesa Sapira Chill had pretty good motion isolation. Looking at the seismograph, I don’t see huge lines or abrupt spiking. You may feel a partner getting in and out of bed, but I think you’re unlikely to be disturbed by their tossing and turning.

I found the Leesa Sapira Chill to have great support. The foam layer added some cushioning, yet was still firm enough to provide some lift while easing me onto the pocketed coil layer. These coils are zoned for support, and I could feel the firmness fluctuate from my shoulders to my hips. Although the bed is pretty plush, I still felt “on” the bed due to the lift from the coils.

As the word “chill” suggests, the Leesa Sapira Chill has excellent cooling abilities. I chose this mattress as the best cooling hybrid because it has an immediate cool-to-the-touch feel when I lay down. The mattress cover is likely the reason for this, as Leesa says the cover contains cooling fibers designed to keep the skin at a cool 88 degrees. The bed also includes cooling gel-infused foam and airy pocketed coils. I used the thermal gun on the Leesa Sapira Chill before and after laying on it for five minutes, and I found a temperature increase of 6.3 degrees. These are great results, and I think hot sleepers will find great cooling from this bed.

Edge Support 4.5/5

When it comes to edge support, the Leesa Sapira Chill was impressive. The edges felt strong and sturdy when I sat and laid on them. I barely sank in even when putting my full weight directly on the edge. I think couples or people with mobility issues could appreciate the edge support on this mattress.

Pressure Relief 5/5

When testing the Medium model for pressure relief, I saw mostly blue on the map with just a bit of green forming at the hips. I felt the most pressure relief when I slept on my back, and I think sleepers with back, shoulder, or hip pain could find a lot of relief in this position. I think most side sleepers will be comfortable on this bed, but side sleepers with preexisting hip pain may find more pain relief on the Plush model.

Brooklyn Bedding designed the Titan Plus specifically for sleepers weighing over 250 pounds who need extra support from their mattress. Since I fall in the average weight category, I asked my professional power lifter friend, Paulie, to help test this bed and provide a more accurate scope of what heavy sleepers can expect. Paulie enjoyed the initial sinkage from the top layer, but overall still felt lifted and supported by the bed. He gave the Titan Plus a 7.5 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest. Heavy sleepers should find this bed quite firm yet still find some slight sinkage. Average and lightweight sleepers will experience the bed as even firmer and won’t sink in as much.

A Note On Weight and Body Type

We recognize that people come in all shapes and sizes, and people of every size deserve a mattress that works for their body type. We use the weight categories light, average, and heavy to more easily categorize sleepers based on how mattresses will perform for their body type, as most mattresses are designed for the group we call “average” (130 to 250 pounds). We consider heavy sleepers to be anyone over 250 pounds, and they tend to need more support to prevent them from sinking too far into the layers.

How the Titan Plus Performed in Testing

Motion Isolation 3.5/5

The Titan Plus had pretty average motion transfer results. As you can see on the seismograph, there’s a noticeable disturbance even from the lowest height, which represents tossing and turning. There’s some out-of-control spiking happening as the height of the ball drop increases. I think you’re likely to feel a partner tossing and turning, especially if you’re a light sleeper.

The best mattresses for heavy people are ultra-supportive and able to promote proper spinal alignment in sleepers weighing over 250 pounds. The Titan Plus can support up to 1,000 pounds, or 500 pounds per side. This bed contains a 6-inch layer of 961 TitanCaliber encased coils. These heavy-duty coils help lift individuals who may sink further into the bed’s layers. A layer of Titanflex foam, a latex alternative, provides additional lift and support.

Cooling 4.5/5

The tall layer of coils in the Titan Plus provides plenty of space for hot air to escape, thus helping the sleeper stay cool. I used a thermal gun to measure the mattress’s temperature before and after laying on it for five minutes and found a temperature increase of 6 degrees. This indicates good cooling, and I think the Titan Plus could be one of the best cooling beds for heavy sleepers.

Edge Support 4.5/5

The edge support on the Titan Plus is solid. As an ultra-supportive mattress, it’s no surprise that the Titan Plus’s support extends all the way to the edge. I felt extremely secure and comfortable sleeping right up to the edge of the bed. When I sat directly on the edge of the bed, I used a yardstick and measured only 2 inches of sinkage. I think heavy weight couples can appreciate this bed’s edge support, as it will allow both sleepers to fully spread out.

Pressure Relief 4/5

Based on the pressure map, I think back sleepers should find nice pressure relief on this bed, even if they suffer from back and joint pain. I also think stomach sleepers will find this bed firm enough to lift their hips in line with their shoulders, thus reducing back pain. Since the bed is quite firm, I wouldn’t recommend it to strict side sleepers. As you can see on the map, there’s some pressure forming at the shoulder when side sleeping.

If you’re looking for a soft mattress with plenty of contouring and pressure relief, the Bear Elite Hybrid could be the bed for you. This mattress comes in Firm, Medium, and Soft models. I tested the Medium model in our studio and gave it a 6 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest. This means the Bear Elite Hybrid is a medium-soft bed that’s great for back and side sleepers. If you’re looking for an extra-soft bed, then you may enjoy the Soft model. I especially like the Soft model for side sleepers with hip pain, as it offers even more sinkage and contouring around the joints.

How the Bear Elite Hybrid Performed in Testing

Motion Isolation 4.5/5

I was extremely impressed with the Bear Elite Hybrid’s motion isolation. Looking at the seismometer results, we see small lines on the graph. The only large spike comes from dropping the steel ball from the tallest height. This height level represents the disturbance you’d feel if someone was jumping on the bed. I think couples would be happy on this mattress and only feel very large movement from a partner.

Support 4.5/5

Thanks to two layers of coils, the Bear Elite Hybrid offers excellent support. The coil-on-coil construction keeps the sleeper lifted and props the spine into neutral alignment. I felt a lot of support from the contour layer, which is a layer of foam zoned for support. There are five support zones within the foam, and each zone has a different firmness level depending on what part of the body it’s supporting. I felt very lifted on this bed, yet I was still able to feel some plush contouring.

Cooling 4.5/5

The coil-on-coil construction gives this mattress double the room for air to flow in and out, thus keeping the sleeper cool. For an additional cost, you can get a Celliant cover for the Bear Elite Hybrid, which is a breathable phase change material that is cool to the touch. When I used the thermal gun, I recorded a temperature increase of 10 degrees after laying on the bed for 5 minutes. This indicates cool cooling abilities, and I did feel very cool when lying on it. I think the Celliant cover and copper-infused foam work nicely with the coils to provide a cool surface for hot sleepers.

Edge Support 4.5/5

When sitting and lying along the sides of this mattress, I felt super secure and stable. There was just a bit of sinkage when placing my full weight directly on the edge of the bed. However, I still felt supported and never felt like I was about to fall off the bed. These strong edges could be useful for anyone with mobility issues, couples, or sleepers who like to spread out and use the entire surface of the bed.

Pressure Relief 4.5/5

The pressure relief on the Medium model of the Bear Elite Hybrid was super impressive. When sleeping on my back, I saw very little pressure forming at my back, hips, and shoulders. However, I would recommend the softer Plush model to side sleepers with sensitive joints, as this firmness will provide more cushioning at the knees, hips, and lower back.

How the Birch Luxe Natural Performed in Testing

Motion Isolation 4/5

As a latex hybrid mattress, the Birch Luxe Natural is bouncier than your typical mattress. Because of this, I expected poor motion isolation results. However, the Birch Luxe actually performed impressively. I think typical tossing and turning shouldn’t disturb your sleep, but you might feel larger movements.

Support 4/5

The Birch Luxe’s support layer is made from individually wrapped steel coils. These coils are zoned for support and are firmer near the center of the bed for additional lumbar support. The mattress also comes with a layer of natural latex, which adds more support. I felt most supported when lying on my stomach and back. The coils did a nice job of lifting my hips in line with my shoulders and propping my spine into neutral alignment.

Cooling 4/5

As I mentioned before, this mattress contains a layer of Talalay latex. This is a naturally breathable and cooling material and should dissipate heat quicker than normal foam. The coils inside the bed also prevent hot air from becoming trapped. I think this bed sleeps pretty cool, so I’d recommend it to hot sleepers. I haven’t used the thermal gun on this bed yet, so stay tuned for those results.

Edge Support

I thought the edge support on the Birch Luxe Natural mattress was decent. When I sat directly on the edge of the bed, I didn’t feel super secure and could feel myself slipping a bit. However, I felt more supported when sleeping near the edges. Couples and people who like to spread out could enjoy this mattress, but I’d recommend a bed with stronger edges to people with mobility issues.

Pressure Relief

Looking at the pressure map, there’s mostly blue and just a touch of green when sleeping on my back. I felt a lot of pressure relief at my back and hips when sleeping in this position. When I sleep on my side, there’s a lot of pressure building at the hips and shoulder, as indicated by the red on the map. I think side sleepers should opt for a softer mattress that offers more contouring around these joints.

How we Test Hybrid Mattresses

Firmness

The firmness of your mattress affects how supportive and comfortable it is. Hybrid mattresses are uniquely able to come in various firmness levels but still be extremely supportive because of their layer of springs. The top layer of foam allows the mattress to remain comfortable while still providing the appropriate level of support.

I test the firmness of all of our mattresses using our expert-developed firmness scale, which places mattresses from 1 to 10, with 10 being the most firm. We usually consider a 6.5 to be a medium-firm mattress and recommend that side sleepers opt for a softer mattress and back and side sleepers look for medium-firm mattresses. The difference in firmness for various sleepers will help them find the best support, pressure relief, and comfort for a great night’s sleep, and hybrid mattresses can accommodate all of these firmness levels, making them a good option for many sleepers.

Pressure Relief

Pressure relief refers to the amount of pressure that is alleviated from certain areas of the body when lying on a mattress in various positions. Because hybrid beds have a layer of foam and springs, they generally provide excellent pressure relief for almost every sleeper and can help to alleviate pressure buildup and pain throughout the night and during the day.

To test for pressure relief of each of our mattresses, I use a pressure mat that I roll across a bed and lay on it in various positions. The mat then reads the pressure buildup on various parts of the body using thermal technology and gives us a digital map reading of those pressure points. As you can see, blue and green indicate low-pressure buildup and good pressure relief, whereas red and yellow show poorer pressure relief.

Motion Isolation

Motion isolation is the measure of how much movement you can feel from one side of the bed to the other. It refers to how much movement can carry across a bed. Motion Isolation is an especially important factor for couples or anyone who sleeps with a pet. Typically, hybrid mattresses have good motion transfer since their foam layers help absorb the bounce of the coils. Individually pocketed coils enhance motion isolation by allowing each coil to move independently, which minimizes the transfer of movement across the mattress. This means that when one person shifts or gets out of bed, the motion is less likely to disturb the other person.

To test the motion isolation of our mattresses, I use a ball drop test and a red wine test. The ball drop test uses a ball dropping from various heights and a seismograph machine which reads how much movement travels from the ball dropping. You can see what seismograph readings look like below. The red wine test uses a glass of red wine on a mattress and our testers move around to see if they can knock it over with their movements. How easy or hard it is to knock over the glass shows them how good the motion isolation is.

Edge Support

This is especially important for mattress durability, as solid edge support can prevent premature mattress sagging. I’d recommend looking at mattresses that mention edge support in their materials, like a high-density foam edge support layer or edge support coils. Hybrid mattresses with their dual-layer construction can generally offer good edge support, making them durable and great for seniors who need a little extra assistance getting in and out of bed.

I test for edge support by pushing down on and sittting on the edges of the mattress and feel how much give they get. I also like to measure the amount of sag from the end of a mattress using a yard stick, so I know exactly how much support the edges have.

Do Hybrid Mattresses Sag?

Hybrid mattresses can sag over time, especially if they use lower-quality materials or lack proper support, however compared to other mattress materials, hybrids are more durable. Regular maintenance, like rotating the mattress, can help prolong its lifespan and minimize sagging.

Durability and Longevity

Hybrid mattresses typically last between seven and 10 years. Their coil layers make them more durable than all-foam mattresses, which I would say wear out the fastest. Responsiveness in a mattress refers to how quickly and effectively it adjusts to changes in position and pressure. Responsiveness is essential for sex, and for combination sleepers who shift position through the night. The responsiveness test — which tells us how good a mattress is for sex — involves our tester laying down on the bed and seeing how easy it is to roll around. Let’s expand on the above table. I think most sleepers will be happy on a hybrid mattress, and here are some specific bed types that might be preferred by different people:

Side Sleepers

Side sleepers put the most pressure on their shoulders and hips, so they tend to need a mattress that allows these areas of their bodies to sink into the bed’s layers.
Side Sleepers should choose a softer hybrid mattress — ideally something with memory foam layers — that offers plenty of pressure relief and contouring.

Because of the added coils, hybrid mattresses are generally priced higher than memory foam mattresses. If you’re looking for a super cheap option, you might be better off with an all-foam bed.
Still, I recommend you pay attention to overall durability when purchasing a mattress. A mattress that’s too inexpensive can really lack in quality, and even a year of use can cause the foams to sag beneath you. Most hybrid mattresses are made with both coils and foam, merging many of their good qualities while leaving out the negatives. For instance, hybrid mattresses tend to maintain the bounce and ease of motion from the coil-based innerspring mattresses while still providing layers of deep compression support and pressure relief. Types of Coils Used in Hybrid Mattresses

There are a range of different coils out there for hybrid beds, all serving different purposes. It can be incredibly important to know what kinds of coils are used in your mattress, as wire gauge, coil count, and encasement quality all relate to the overall quality of the mattress.

What Does Coil Count Mean?

Coil count, unsurprisingly, refers to how many coils are in a mattress.

What to Look for With Coil Count

Typically, you’ll want to avoid mattresses with low coil counts (less than 300), as they won’t offer the same level of support.

These days, you’ll often see coil counts of 1,000 in hybrid mattresses. However, I wouldn’t say this is necessarily an indicator of quality, since you’ll also want to know the coil gauge, which I’ll describe below.

What is Coil Gauge?

A mattress’s coil gauge tells you how firm it will feel. A mattress with a lower coil gauge is going to have thicker coils, which will make the mattress feel firmer. Conversely, a mattress with a higher coil gauge will have thinner coils and feel softer. Typically, coil gauge numbers range from 12 to 15, with 15 being softest and 12 being firmest.

If you’re looking for firm support, I’d recommend a gauge of 13 or lower. If you’re after pressure relief and contouring, you’ll fare better with a gauge of 14 or higher.

Hybrid vs Innerspring

Like hybrid mattresses, innerspring mattresses are made with coils. However, hybrid mattresses have layers of foam, while innerspring beds typically do not. Innerspring beds tend to have a firmer, more traditional feel than hybrid beds.

Latex can either be synthetic or natural. Natural latex comes from rubber trees. It offers the same pressure relief as other foams, but has a more buoyant feel.
