The Yomiuriâs chairman, Tsuneo Watanabe, is a close associate of Mr. Abeâs, and the newspaper firmly backs the prime minister. With the apology, it appeared less to be bending with the conservative wind than stoking its power. Critics sensed a political statement disguised as an admission of guilt.

The move by the Yomiuri Shimbun, a conservative broadsheet with a daily circulation of more than 10 million, has fuelled concern that sections of the countryâs media have signed up to a government-led campaign to rewrite Japanâs wartime history and portray its actions on the Asian mainland in a more favourable light.
Revisionist attempts to portray the women as willing prostitutes hired by private brokers has soured Tokyoâs relations with South Korea, where many of the victims came from. The Japanese prime minister, Shinzo Abe, has yet to hold a bilateral summit with his counterpart in Seoul, Park Geun-hye, since he took office in December 2012.

Japan apologised in 1993 for forcing thousands of women, many from China and South Korea, into army brothels.
But some conservatives in Japan want that admission reassessed.
...
Earlier this year it was revealed that the Abe-appointed leadership at Japan's national broadcaster, NHK, had issued new guidelines for its English language news channel that stated the words "sex slave" should no longer be used in news reports when referring to comfort women.

âThe Yomiuri Shimbun thinks the point of the issue is whether or not there were âcomfort women who were carted off by the military during the war,â â the newspaper spokesman said. âWe have been criticizing Asahiâs reports that spread this inaccurate view in and out of Japan that âthe military coerced womenâ and setting those inaccurate reports right.â
Part of that involved clarifying Yomiuriâs own terminology, said the spokesman, who asked that his name not be used, as is the convention in Japan.
The Asahiâs retraction has been used by many nationalist-minded conservatives to suggest that the entire history of the sex slaves was made up and that the women were not coerced but were simply prostitutes.
âThis is part of a larger story,â said Koichi Nakano, a political scientist at Sophia University in Tokyo. âThe government is trying, with some success inside Japan, to create an impression that the comfort women issue is an Asahi fabrication.â
Abe, the nationalist prime minister who says he wants to make Japan a ânormalâ country, and his close aide, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga, leapt on the Asahi retraction when it was made in August.
