If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what everyday stuff famous people add to their carts — like hair spray or an electric toothbrush. We asked actor Kyra Sedgwick — who’ll next star in the film Bad Shabbos — about the eyelash curler, breast pillow, and biodegradable floss she can’t live without.
Oh my God, this is the greatest thing in the world. I did one of those Rachael Ray–adjacent cooking shows about a decade ago, and they used this for everything from garlic to cheese to ginger. Once you get it, you’ll never stop using it. I use it to grate Parmesan on pasta. I don’t have to cut garlic; I just shave it. It’s such a pain in the ass to shred ginger, and this gets everything shredded nicely and uniformly. It’s really easy to clean. I either hand-wash it or throw it in the dishwasher. I use it at least once or twice a day in my cooking. It’s incredible.
This set comes with a fork, knife, spoon, chopsticks, and carabiner clip. I just put it in my purse and use it all the time if I get takeout. It’s the most amazing thing in the world if I’m on location or traveling and don’t want to bring heavy utensils or use plastic. The bamboo feels good in your mouth, and it’s easy to clean. I mean, literally bamboo almost cleans itself. It doesn’t hold bacteria. If you don’t have time to wash it with soap and water, you can just wipe it and it’s okay to use. I give it to everybody I know as a present.
This is an amazing shirt. I know it’s very pricey, but it comes in a lot of textures and colors and can be worn a lot of different ways. You can wear it over a little camisole as a substitute for a cardigan or by itself. I love the details — the ruffles, the little buttons on the wrist. It’s superspecial. My friend Linda Wolff, who used to own a little Upper West Side boutique, told me about it. She’s my cooler-than-me friend who’s good at pointing out these things. She told me about the Innersense, too.
This is a new one for me. I’m pretty sure it’s a small company, which is good. It really helps tame frizz for curly hair whenever it’s humid out. I just rub a little dab between my hands and give my curls a squeeze. It reminds me of the ’80s when scrunching your hair with mousse was a thing. It’s much stronger than you would imagine, but it’s a gel so your hair doesn’t actually feel crunchy. People are always asking me how I do my hair, and this is one of those things.
I’ve actually been using this since the ’80s. It’s like I’m stuck in the ’80s and am hopeless in the makeup department. I don’t know how to put on makeup, but I do know how to curl my eyelashes and use mascara. I have really deep-set eyes, and this is the only lash curler that works for me. It can get into my eye socket (that sounds so gross) so I can curl right at the lash line. Also, Shiseido gives you a couple of extra rubber pads for it so you can use it for a long time. There are definitely some curlers are super-supercheap, but they’re not worth it. This one is.
I don’t know if a lot of people know what camphor is, but it’s an ingredient in Carmex and a lot of other lip balms. It’s actually a drying agent. I feel like it’s put in to make your lips drier so you get addicted to the lip balm and can’t do without it. This does not contain camphor and is made from all-natural ingredients. I found it while I was getting a facial one time, and I’ve been buying it since. It’s made from bees, and it doesn’t dry out my lips.
This is another thing Linda told me about. Apparently, the texture of your hair changes every seven years, and I believe it. I still have a lot of hair, but my hair shaft has minimized and there’s more shedding. Rosemary oil is supposed to stimulate hair growth, so I started adding about ten drops into my shampoo. I love the smell and feel like my hair loves it. I’ve been doing this for about three months, and I must say, I definitely feel less hair loss in the shower. I personally think we don’t talk about women’s hair loss or hair change enough, along with many women’s health issues. This is a natural way that might help, so I’m in.
Speaking of things women don’t talk about enough, I’ve always wanted to sleep on my back. I’ve heard Sharon Stone says the reason she has no wrinkles is that she sleeps on her back. I have tried and tried, but there’s some little baby thing that makes me want to be curled into my body with my hands under my chin. It feels safe. Anyway, the cleavage pillow is something I’ve put on every night for the past 15 years or so. It basically creates a separation for your boobs so when you wake up in the morning, you don’t have big, deep creases between your boobs and your décolleté. It’s the most important secret of all. Young people: Start early.
First of all, I’ve heard flossing your teeth adds years to your life. I do not know how true this is, but I’m going to stick by it. It sounds right to me. I want to have my own teeth while I’m living a good long time, so I floss every day. But what makes me feel terrible about it is that a lot of floss is made from nonbiodegradable substances and comes in a big hard-plastic container. As we know, plastic never goes anywhere. It’s basically a petroleum product that is killing us. This is a great opportunity to have a cardboard container as well as a floss that biodegrades and doesn’t end up tying fish into knots or turning into nanoplastic in the ocean. And then you get to add some years to your life. What could be bad about that?
One of the main reasons I love Bombas is they give away free socks for every pair sold. They almost have too many different variations of socks, but the ones I really like are short and don’t slip down. They have elastic, but they’re really comfortable. Other socks I’ve tried like this can make my feet and ankles ache, but these don’t. And they’re perfect for Converse sneakers, which I wear a lot.
I’m just obsessed with this. I have been ever since it started. It’s creamy and freaking delicious, and I’m practically positive it’s pretty environmentally friendly. It makes everything better. It’s really good in coffee, but it’s also really good in ice cream. I feel so silly talking about this, but the devil’s in the details, right? At night, I eat ice cream, but I like it a little softer than it is right out of the freezer. So I put a little bit of Oatley in it and mush it around and have ice-cream soup.
