The Spinning Kong is one Donkey Kong's up-special move in the Super Smash Bros. series. It is executed by tilting up on the Control Stick or Circle Pad, and pressing the special attack button. As the name suggests, Spinning Kong involves Donkey Kong extending his arms and spinning around rapidly (similar to Dixie Kong's Helicopter Spin from the Donkey Kong Country series).
Like Bowser's Whirling Fortress, Spinning Kong is an attack which can be used either on land or in midair. Spinning Kong has a second use of being Donkey Kong's midair recovery move, so if he gets hit off the stage, he can use Spinning Kong to return onto it. Unlike most recovery moves, Spinning Kong has little vertical mobility, though this is compensated for its long horizontal travel.
Spinning Kong does not damage the opponent as much as Donkey Kong's other moves, though the move's first hit does more knockback than its subsequent hits. Spinning Kong has a few invincibility frames at the start, which makes Donkey Kong resistant to knockback.
Variants[]
In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U, the move has two variants:
Chopper Kong gives Donkey Kong better vertical distance, but it has less horizontal mobility, and can't deal any damage. Donkey Kong flies straight up if he uses this move on the ground.
Kong Cyclone enables Donkey Kong to create a tornado around himself, which sucks in any nearby opponents before blowing them away. Opponents caught from below will be sent upwards, and those from above are sent downwards. However, the move only delivers up to two hits, with the first hit being very weak, while the second hit packs more power, and has KO potential. Donkey Kong is given super armor throughout the duration of the spin
Trivia[]
- In the competitive Smash Bros. scene, Kong Cyclone (along with Storm Punch) was very powerful, significantly raising Donkey Kong's use and viability in tournaments when they allowed Custom Moves.
