Giant punch

Giant Punch is an attack performed by Donkey Kong in the Super Smash Bros. series.

Usage[]

The Giant Punch involves the player holding down the B button. This causes Donkey Kong to swing his arms back and forth, charging up a punch. After swinging his arm a few times, Donkey Kong's head begins to smoke, indicating that his Giant Punch is fully charged. When the player presses the B button again, Donkey Kong will release a strong punch. The charge can also be "paused" by either shielding or rolling, and can be continued as normal. The more time that Donkey Kong winds up his attack, the stronger his punch is. If Donkey Kong is attacked while charging his attack, he loses all of the build-up. Donkey Kong cannot execute a Giant Punch in mid-air because this puts him in a helpless position.

In a cutscene of the Subspace Emissary mode of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Donkey Kong uses Giant Punch to rescue Diddy Kong from being hit by Bowser's Dark Cannon, only to be hit by it in the process.

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U, two additional variants were introduced: the Lightning Punch and Storm Punch. Lightning Punch has a faster charge to maximum and deals electric damage, though it's less powerful, and Storm Punch is also less powerful while creating a whirlwind that knocks opponents away while punching.

Trivia[]

  • Prior to the move appearing in the original Super Smash Bros., Donkey Kong performs a similar punch in the Donkey Kong Country episode Bad Hair Day, where he uses it to press the button to his tree house's elevator. Donkey Kong also performs a similar punch in Mario Party 5 and Donkey Kong Country Returns.
